What do you guys think? Am I reading too much into these little snippets of music or does this give us an insight into how Julian is thinking about harmony in a SATB manner?

I like Casablancas' compositions. Clever stacking of chords, creating counterpoint within. And it all sounds cool too.

Totally agree He's a much more complex composer than most people think. As I said in the video he can turn three chords into something truly amazing.

The Strangest Strokes bass line in my opinion is When it Started not for the note choices but the rhythm and very sticoto bass parts.

I love that bass line mind you I love nearly all the Strokes bass lines.

It’s posible that they were just Jamming, and he like the way it sound and never thought

Thanks for watching. Thats definitely a possibility. I've heard someone describe all composing as improvisation but slowed down( which I suppose it is). Personally I think Julian thinks a lot of this through.

Also known as E9sus. A common chord in disco and soul music.

its literally just an Esus chord. it has the 9, the 11, and the dominant 7

your harmonic analysis is fundamentally wrong, and saying it has "elements of counterpoint" is also wrong because if the guitars arent moving and the bass is, theres only one part in motion. which is literally not counterpoint. it feels like youre taking a very small thing and trying to shoehorn a completely separate discussion of counterpoint onto it. i think this wouldve worked better if you had analyzed the whole song and not two bars. you couldve covered this in much less time too

Correct, E9sus. It's common in soul music as a voicing for dominant function chords. It lacks the leading tone, so less of a pull towards the tonic, but the lack of tritone makes it much more consonant.

@@lxxwj Thanks for your reply. I may indeed be reading too much into this. We have oblique motion in counterpoint where one 'voice" remains the same while the other moves. I did also say this isn't counterpoint.

@nirajmehta6424 Thanks for reply the comment. We don't have the 5th(B) which sus chords do and wouldn't an E chord with dominant function resolve to an A chord? I am probably reading too much into this though.
