I took this train in oposite direction from Graz to Vienna in January of this year and after traveling with ČD few days prior, I was very underwhelmed by the experience. OBB was not even in the same league in terms of comfort, customer service and staff, which frankly surprised me as I was expecting them to be way better. But the views at Semmeringbahn were indeed stunning, my favorite part of the journey, can't wait to travel on the route again.

The Slovenian railways locomotive that was pulling you was designed and built in Italy by Ansaldo (SŽ class 342). Now, either you don't consider Italy as western Europe or you assumed that it is an eastern locomotive since you were in Slovenia :)

In some of them. Some (like the one in the video) have them mounted underneath the window/table, but unfortunately not in all rows. As far as I remember those cars were retrofitted in several batches; the first ones have the sockets on the wall, later they changed it to the overhead position. I guess it's much simpler there: you can unrig the whole luggage rack (it probably was repainted anyways during the refurbishment), take it to the workshop bench, and conveniently route the cable through the metal profiles - no need for cutting holes in the walls (which are partially structural in these cars!) and thread in cables for every row...

This is a really nice video, it brings back memories of when I visited Vienna a few years ago. Some small notes, though: You didn't cross any of the Dinaric Alps. Zagreb is on the same side of them as Vienna. You say that a small part of the journey is through Slovenia, but that section is longer than the part through Croatia. You say that the Slovenian locomotives are different to Western European ones, but the one that pulled your train is made in Italy. I hope you had a great time in Croatia. If you ever plan on coming again, I recommend taking the train between Rijeka and Zagreb for some nice views. I particularly like the rear view as the train leaves Rijeka.

The compartment is just like the earlier express train parts of the Deutsche Bundesbahn: All 6 seats can be pulled out and form 3 lying areas, each seat in the aisle has a small table that can be pulled out, the narrow mirrors above the headrests create endless reflections. In the past, every seat had a pull-out ashtray in the armrest. - Cheers, Heinz

For 59,90E alone in a 6 seater compartment was a big bargain plus comfort and privacy. Good you did not upgrade and spent extra 50 to 60Euros more. No way. I will do the same. I salute you. If the trip is full , maybe not. But I used to do that in the 70s and 80s with those old trains. It was fun though even trips were much slower then. The best looking seats you showed, I think it's Business Class. Happy travels.

once again a very nice video, i'd love to travel with the OBB one day. and i totally agree that the compartiment carriage, as much of a dying breed as it is, should be kept since its what it makes railway travel unique. i even think that high speed trains should have some in this format, but its unfourtunate how the railway industry prefers open coaches, similar to airline seating, theres not much privacy, its not even that amazing, it just makes the train travel experience less interesting (granted they are sometimes comfortable though). also motorrail trains could be useful in the future as they would do great to reduce congestion on the roads. i'll keep watching the videos, they seem awesome.

Well, from a train conductor's view - I feel a little safer with more people around and the ticket inspection is a lot easier in open plans. But as a traveller, I much prefer compartments.

OBB sold some of these carriges to RegioJet and ČD. the other day I rode ČD R "Vysočina" (R stands for Rychlík - fast train but lower quality than IC) and thse carriges were the most comfortable on hte whole train. Better than my first class coach, built in the 80s in eaastern germany:-D. More recently OBB started refurbishig these coaches to couchetts for their nightjet sleeper services and I have to say, they did a stellar job.

Yes, these seats have been around for ages. I went on an interrail back in the 1970s (that ages me!) and we had them on the train from Copenhagen to Paris. The compartment was full of inter-railers like me, so we put down all the seats and simply took off our shoes and all "intertwined"!

@8:50 in this type of car the 4-seat groups have outlets underneath the small tables by the window, but unfortunately not all of the 2-seat rows have them (they were retrofitted in the early 2000s and I guess the construction of the car didn't allow to install sockets easily at every row). But usually it's no problem to ask the person in the row in front of you if you can use their socket and route the cable underneath the seat. :-)

Not quite the same, as these seats were introduced in the early 90s and the Atlantique is quite new. But I sure was glad to see that they are moving away from individual seats back to this design. It is also more secure, as I've heard that people were robbed by someone sitting behind them. The gap between the individual seats is ideal for a casual grab in a purse. As you are French, it's a pity you didn't film any of the Slovenian Class 363 Alstom "Nez Casses" locomotives, which are a direct derivative of the famous CC 6500. We also call them "Brižita" after Brigitte Bardot. I think one of them is pulling the freight train at 11:16. And...This about the investitions in our railways is a joke, or? These are essential works to keep trains running.

Hey man, I didn't stop in Slovenia so filming class 363 was impossible despite the fact that I love this machine. Then I'm agree with you but some countries like France don't invest in their tracks since decade.

@@SimplyRailway there were none parked along the route? :) pity that the "Croatia" wasn't hauled by one of them, it happens quite often. Hmm please don't compare out rails with France. We are currently investing into the Spielfeld - Zidani Most line to be capable of holding the 22,5 t axle load, that practically means that the Taurus will finally be able to run on this line (and this is the main line in Slovenia!). The speeds are low, around 80 km/h, probably it would be a little better now when we finally decided to invest in railways (20 years too late...), but it won't go over 120 km/h. As I have travelled in France, we never ran under 160 km/h on classic lines.

@@markoobid2005 Well, speed limits varies depending, on the course of the rail line. You are mixing average speed with top speed. Trains can run up to 160 km/h (which is more then enough for a smaller country) on some sections (Maribor - Pragersko, Celje - Grobelno, Ljubljana - Zalog, Hodoš - Pragersko). I agree, 2 hours for a journey between Maribor and Ljubljana (156 km) is too long. Ongoing modernization projects will cut this time.

Beautiful station in Vienna and then you came to Zagreb and see that ugly old station. Oh how many times i traveled from that station and ask myself, when the hell will they demolish that and build new one, larger and better. Well, that wont happen hehe. We have one of worst railways system in Europe (in Croatia). It almost never go on time, and always is late to destination. We have plenty of such coaches but most of them are old, overally bad.
