Curiously, he never became an icon in America. Hollywood tried, but the public response was indifference. Back to France. Belmundo was the style icon for men. Considered ugly then, today he would be top of the Hotties List because of his on-screen sexuality. Also, off-screen. He never lost it. American Jean Seaburg helped get the balls rolling. It was a pretty sight. Together, they made cinema history. Best of the New Wave.

Selznick, known for Gone with the Wind, and directors like Howard Hawks, famous for Scarface and Bringing Up Baby, expressing interest in casting him. His collaborations with Luchino Visconti, known for The Leopard and Death in Venice, further enhanced his international profile. I have looked into a lot of Alains interviews since his death along with interviews from Anthony and Fabien. What made Alain the way he was perhaps comes down to the fact he never bought in to the Holywood dream and looking back to the 1960's he could have been tempted by the financial rewards and fame. With James Dean gone imagine what he could have done? But he stayed in France and for Delon fans Dieu merci. He became a myth and gave so much to French/Italian cinema.
