I agree Miles pretty much only played what sounds good. But you have to remember that Miles was an extremely educated and academic musician, too. He was a well studied Juliard musician and never stopped learning new things. I think he did that old Charlie Parker saying: “First you learn the instrument, then you learn the music, then you forget all that s**t and just play.”
