This is a great breakdown on such a true style icon!! It’s sad to me though how his “old age” was only his 50s/60s since he died at 67 :( but his drip is eternal

It’s genuinely tragic, but yes, drop is eternal!!! Thanks for watching!

It's astonishing that the photo at 2:10 which seemingly embodies punk, in image and attitude - the shaved head, the sunglasses, the black motif, the Aztec medallion on a long chain, the sheriff star both incongruous and entirely apt (the way formalwear and boarding school clothes came to embody punk style) - and yet, the photo is from his 1970 sheriff's campaign, years before the specific style existed, and a lesson that such styles are an amalgamation of so many things before it. I'm only two videos into your channel, and I'm really into it. I hope you blow up big.

Thank you so much for saying that, it means a lot. But I totally see what you’re saying! There’s definitely similarities between this and the punk look/attitude.

@@Daniel_Verhey okay maybe a selfish rec/request but i see you've done some vids on normcore and my favourite film ever is stop making sense, the talking heads concert film. the fashion is sooo iconic (including the famous giant suit costume) and (i think) deconstructs this 80s american wall street type. there are small details i love, for example jerry harrison (guitarist) wears this workwear jacket with buttons up the arms and shoulders that effectively split the jacket into three pieces. all the clothes look so worn and well made, makes me sad about the quality of clothes produced today. anyway most of the wardrobe is pretty minimal except for some of the womenswear so maybe not worth a whole video but definitely check the film out if you haven't. other underrated films i love for their wardrobe: beautiful thing 1996 girlfriends 1978 cruising 1980 rodeo 2022 american gigolo 1980 and i love the jackass films i think johnny knoxville dresses himself so well!

@aliceliardet6621 thank you for all these recs! I need to watch the talking heads concert film! It all sounds so interesting. I definitely need to do a video on American Gigolo one day too!!!

A very random question but if you tell me what this mustache is called and tell me how to maintain it.
@Daniel_Verhey11 ай бұрын
Well this is all I can really grow lol but I guess it’d be considered a pencil mustache? All I do to maintain it is trim it right above my lip. Hope that helps!

its kind of funny how i've been unintentionally dressing like this guy for years, but i've only dove into his writing in the last month or two. i've been big into ralph steadman since i was a kid so i was always thompson adjacent, but now i'm all self conscious wearing my bucket hat or ANY of my hats, white sneakers, legs out year round, and yeah my ugly utility vest (that gets all kinds of compliments, i'm just trying to carry stuff) in public while reading one of his books. hell, i even have yellow lenses in my favorite glasses just because i was hoping they would help with my night vision (they don't, but they're cool anyway). i can't say i look as slick as he always did because the stuff i buy is not cut for a small woman. i wear it anyway and tailor stuff if i really have to. the main key to looking rad is to wear what you like. i think my banana shirt got me hired today.

You mentioned the thing about Hunter shaving his head but didn't elaborate. I will, because it's funny. He was running against a clean-cut conservative and with a shaved head, he could honestly refer to the guy as, "my long-haired opponent." A powerful spirit within Hunter's style was the mythical idea of America and the lifestyles of the authors who wrote "the great American novel." No specific influences, just the idea of the outdoors and sports and rugged individualism.

I didn’t want the video to be over a certain amount of time so i had to cherry pick what details I added in but yes! I love the reasoning behind shaving his head
