A little about me:
My name's Minoo, and I'm originally from Iran.
I obtained my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Diploma in England in 1985.
Since then, I've been an English teacher, teacher trainer, and course director in various schools and countries. I'm also a trained confidence coach.
In 2008, my son, Tom, and I set up the Anglo-Link platform for online English studies.
This led to the creation of our popular KZbin channel in 2011.
My passion is to share with you what I've learnt on my own English language journey, both as a student and as a teacher, so that you can become a fluent speaker of English too.

I am not a native English speaker, but I find the subjunctive mood quite easy. It needs a little bit of concentration so that you can learn the rules by heart and of course it requires a lot of practice on your part.

It's a very tricky subject because native speakers take many liberties with it. You don't really need it for daily communication. If you're doing a test and need to know it well, then it will help to make some notes for yourself and then try to teach it to someone else with your own examples. That's the most effective way of mastering anything.

@@AngloLinkEnglish Thank you very much for this lesson! The past subjunctive is more or less straight forward. However, the present subjunctive was a new concept for me. I’ve seen these constructions before and... Well, I was thinking that someone has just forgotten the -s at the end of the verb. Now I know what it is. That’s a great idea about teaching someone else! Fortunately, I know some fellow-artists who have no idea about present conjunctive. I’ll spread the word! Thanks again! Meanwhile, I’ll watch other lessons on your channel.

I've been speaking English alongside my native tongue for as long as I can remember and never know knew about the subjunctive mood. I also used to use it without realising it, eg. "If I*were* in your place." However, I was only introduced to the topic because of Spanish, as the subjunctive mood is a lot more prominent there. Very interesting how learning a new language improves your previously learnt languages!!

Great video! I have a quick comment on timestamp 5:00: I am a native Midwestern English speaker. We would actually say: I recommended he delays seeing a specialist. But in terms of actual pronunciation: I recuhmended he delays seein’ a specialist. The that is optional, but gives off a tone of formality or intelligence. It also functions as a signifier if soft power.

Thank you, Sadegh! I'm glad you've enjoyed this lesson. It's always delicate to use authentic material in YT videos because of copyright issues. That's why I prefer to come up with my own examples. Also, I find that when we're learning a complex structure for the first time, it's best to keep the vocabulary relatively simple so that the focus remains on the structure.

I wish I could give you a clear-cut answer, but I'm afraid I can't. As with all prepositions, things are vague with 'to' and 'for'. Sometimes, they both work: That's useful TO/FOR me. Sometimes, only one is correct: That sounds good TO me. That works FOR me.

I'm Spanish and we use quite a lot the subjunctive but I thought this didn't exist in English. I've just realised reading some books from natives speakers. Great explanations by the way!

As I mention in the lesson, the present subjunctive form = the base verb (infinitive without to). As I mention in one of the notes, in everyday spoken English, you can use the normal tense (upgrades), but not in formal written English.
