I related to so much in this movie BUT the sccene that smacked me in the face was the makeup ruining before the going out. I have really bad agoraphobia and until very recently I had not gone outside for 6 years, and now that I am starting to try and fight it (i went to the store recently!) I do find myself self sabotaging like she did, ruining things so I have an excuse to stay in, turn people down, stay in the comfy place where yes Its disappointiing, but its hidden and its safe. (ive also used binge eating as a way to self sabotage for years so that was an added layer). GOD this movie is so good

What a wonderful reflection and review! It struck me that Monstro Elizasue seems to be the first iteration of Elizabeth that demonstrates compassion towards herself. There was a real look of tenderness from the creature as she readied herself for the New Years Show in the mirror. I think the arc towards contentment we see on Elizabeth's face in the final scene begins in these moments.

I agree. I think it's a metaphor for many things including ageism, perfectionism, body dysmorphia, Hollywood about age and beauty standards, societal pressures expectation women's worth is in their reproductivity/youth, lack of self acceptance/self hatred, oneness w self & universe, and seeking validation outside of self.

I’m also a gay stutterer that loves this movie 👯😂 Demi needs that Oscar nomination I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the nurse who turned Elizabeth onto The Substance is presumably a gay man. With the impossible beauty standards of the gay community as well as the obsession with youth, I’m sure a lot of elderly gay men would take The Substance, even knowing the consequences

I actually feel like I’ve seen more Men positively reviewing this over women funny enough. I feel like out of context women might steer away due to the nudity and sexuality of the film. But it’s all done tastefully and with a purpose. But the message of ageism, self acceptance and self love are human experiences. Yesss the misogyny is how the film starts. But for me the central portion of the story is the intimate relationship she has with herself. And how without internal acceptance and love. You’ll never be happy

I like how the nurse took the substance, like he’s not in a career where he needs looks for his career, he’s just some guy. And even someone with medical background is misusing the substance. It’s also interesting Elisabeth doesn’t aspire to, say, run her own production company with her new body but just do the same thing as Elisabeth and continue work for Harvey just doing the exact same thing again. Idk why but I was so shocked at the parents who brought their in the audience for the NYE show with the topless dancers lmao haha

Commenting again as I get further into the video, re: Elisabeth’s Hollywood Star-SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET When the food was spilled on it, I sorta smirked to myself and thought, “Ohhhh, that ketchup looks like blood, I bet this image is gonna reappear in a diff context at the end” and it DOES, which really highlights how meticulous Fargeat was creating this film. But the journey from “guy spills ketchup on Elisabeth’s star” to “blood puddle Elisabeth drags herself over to dissolve into smear of blood” was just fucking masterful. Ugh. I have sufficiently made this move my entire personality, lol!

New subscwibuh 👏 Haven't felt emotions like these in a MINUTE from a movie. Two things I question is what benefit original Elizabeth got from not sharing the same feelings and thoughts as Sue. The movie says they're one, but many scenes show they dont share memories or experiences after Sue's birth. 2nd thing is the original usb note she got from the nurse, the letter " M " had a distinct font that matched the flowers she got when she was fired. I feel like this means theres some singular mastermind behind the substance. Such as some ultrapowerful person that runs Hollywood and created/funds the substance in order to keep producing new sexy young talent. ANYWHOO, great review ❤

@Allgloss312 I think you're right, and perhaps she (Margaret) nailed the one-dimensional act. I definitely enjoyed her character more in the 3rd Act, when she became evil and desperate. My main question coming out of this film was, why isn't Demi on our screens more?? But then again, I think the themes of this film are the perfect answer to that question. I can't wait to see what she does next.

Only thing I wish is that the ending was just a bit more “she was fine old”. Only because I went with two avid movie watchers who are pretty literate in that medium, but they both came out HATING themselves. I’ve personally never experienced dysmorphia, I’m in my 20s, and I’ve never dealt with drug addiction, so I came out with a stronger grip on who I am. But I fear that the ending, with Sparkle’s face tight from being on the back of Monstrosa, and thinking of how the NYE guests should’ve been cheering… it just didn’t really give a safe space to women’s insecurities and the regret we’ll feel if we’re consumed by them. A total call out to patriarchy yes, but no shoulder to cry on. I don’t know how she could’ve possibly done a better ending than the stage, but the star scene felt rushed.

I struggled to draw anything profound out of The Substance. I left the viewing feeling like I'd just watched an elaborately produced bikini commercial. The film doesn't say anything particularly interesting about desire, age or femininity. I really detest films which shove lots of flesh down your throat, and then pretend to have some grand pretext for debauching your imagination. 'The Substance' is a very close cousin of the 'X/Maxxxine' movies, which combine absolutely irrational scenarios with a script that has been lifted from an 'Archie' comic. The fact that some of this film's most ardent critics are intelligent young women, really says something too. If you look at Rodin's famous sculpture of the aging beauty, it says infinitely more about women and ageing, than this cheap sex-ploitation film. Read a Charlotte Bronte novel, if you really want to understand womanhood.

I liked the movie, but society doesn't value women like that. For example, Borka Vucic, she was a banker extremely influential and regarded in Serbia till her death, at which moment she was 83. Nobody asked about her eggs or looks, i swear. Also i am pretty positive that Coralie won't be kicked out from the industry when she goes 50. I can understand the trauma of a celebrity downfall, but this is a quantum of tragedy happening in humanity due to people lacking basic support. This here is not lacking basic support, it's a well off person who lived off a superficial industry, expecting somehow that now it accommodates to her current expectations and age.
