The Summons
The Summons calls on all people to heed God's call and completely develop into who they were created to be. In this hymn, the call to service is one that is transforming; when we embrace Christ's calling to come and be where God is already, the experience shapes our life to "care for cruel and kind" and to "never be the same." Each verse's final phrase also reflects how God works in and through us, as well as how God is the source of our life, moving, and being.
The Scottish community of Iona is where author and musician John Bell resides and creates the lyrics for this song. Written in 1987, The Summons can be found in the United Methodist hymnal addition named "The Faith We Sing" number 2130. The music is from a traditional Scottish tune called "Kelvingrove."
