-Vertical axis = earths tilt ( solstices on Dec22/June 22 are close to the time of Perihelion/aphelion, Jan 3/4 & July 3/4) -Horizontal axis = the inconsistency between the suns "time" and our inaccurate solar based calender system which effects our daily and hourly time. The horizontal axis isnt naturally "real", its based on our inaccurate solar calender....its actually only a vertical line according to the suns "real" time.

The sun is at these positions at the same time of every year making a figure 8....if the earth was flat, no seasons, no night time, you would've the found the end of it all ready NO ONE IS STOPPING YOU, sun would be flat, the moon with be flat, no water, and every planet, star, moon, celestial body would be flat not just earth, No gravity, life wouldn't exist. Finally analemma.com is back online. For some reason my previous comments are not here anymore. 4:45 The professor states that it's the eliptical orbit that causes the east-west motion. That's not entirely correct. It's the elliptical orbit that causes the figure-8 shape to be fatter on the bottom, but it's the TILT that causes the shape to be a figure-8 in the first place. It's a complicated motion to see, but analemma.com explains it quite nicely in the "Obliquity" section. Also see Analemma Generator at alokm.com/astro/analemmagenerator.html Here you can see for yourself if you take away the tilt, the figure-8 shape resolves to a straight line east and west, regardless of the eccentricity.

1. The solar analemma is produced with photos at the exact same time every day of a year. 2. A tutulemma includes a solar eclipse as one of the points. 3. It appears differently shaped above the horizon on different parts of the earth. 4. The tilt of the analemma depends, in part, upon the time of day the photos are taken. 5. Within the Arctic and Antarctic circles it is partially behind the horizon. 6. At the poles the analemma is vertical, and the tilt changes at each degree of latitude. 7. It is horizontal and directly overhead at noon at the equator, and the loops are equal in size. 8. Its southern loop is larger in the northern hemisphere, and its northern loop is larger in the southern hemisphere. 9. If the earth did not tilt the analemma would be a horizontal line. 10. If the earth's orbit around the sun was a perfect circle, the analemma would be a vertical line. 11. If the earth did not tilt AND the orbit was a perfect circle the analemma would be a dot.

7. No, the loops are not equal in size. This depends on the Perhelion point and this is the same everywhere on earth.

@@mensensterpeterevers1818 6. It is horizontal and directly overhead at noon at the equator 7. The loop tends to be longer towards the equator and equal at the equator though it also depends upon the speed and proximity of the Earth's orbit which constantly varies.

If the earth's orbit around the sun was a perfect circle, the analemma would be a perfect figure 8, with no difference between the top half and bottom half. It's the obliquity of the orbit that give the analemma it's figure 8 shape, it's the ECCENTRICITY of the orbit that makes it smaller at the top and it's the fact that perhilion doesn't occur on Dec 21st that give it the lopsided shape. @@davidmella1174 There would be a coval if the Perhileon point would be at the Wintersolstice (at the bottem of the figure) ore Summersolstice (at the top of the figure). This was approxamate a thousand years ago the case. Now this Perhileon point is still moving away from the Winter and Summersolstice and makes this crosspoint of the 8 figure somewhere between these two points. So there is indeed just one Perhelionpoint but there are still two equinoxes (spring and autumn) due to the tilt of the earth and these two movements combined makes the two loops of the Analemma. ;)

The "fast/slow" explanation doesn't make sense. If it was the way you described, then the analemma would be an oval instead of a figure 8. Think about it. Instead of being fast once a year, and slow once a year; it's fast twice a year and slow twice a year. So there has to be another explanation for it.
