This is my absolute favorite rendition of this song... Been trying to remember the artist for so long after hearing this in high school (I'm 28), and I've finally stumbled upon it... my heart is touched... The melody sings to my soul...

Gene Cokeroft, not only a fabulous tenor, but a true gentleman. You will be missed. Much love to your family at this time. Amy Bostick Kepler

This is amazing to be reading all these comments. I grew up with the Suntones.. Gene Cokeroft was my father Bert Warshaw, best friend. He actually gave the eulogy at his funeral. Gene was part of my father's comedy quartet, The Opa Locka Gas Company years later. I have many many fond memories of Bob, Harlan, Gene and Bill. Kevin, if you are in touch with Todd or Harlan, please let them know that the Warshaw family sends their love. I would love to hear Todd sing, if he is anything like Harlan, he's a super star. There will never be another quartet like the Suntones :)

This brings back so many memories as I have heard the Suntones sing this many times back in the 60's and early 70's. They were the best that's ever been in quartet harmony in my humble opinion.

Best Barbershop Quartet ever. Best Danny boy ever. Ever. I have heard all versions, dating back to old vinyl recordings 90 years old. Many sing the words, but so few sing to the heart as do the Suntones. RIP Gene. The very best. Ever.

I had the pleasure of singing with the Palm Beach County Coastmen with Harlan Wilson for about 4 years. Of course almost every show we did contained the Suntones. Even had the awesome pleasure of singing bass with them one night when Bill Cain was late for sound check. Never forget it!! One of the high points of my barbershop career.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the roses falling it's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come you back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. But when you come, and all the flowers are dying If I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear how soft you tread above me And oh my grave will warm as sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me, love me And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me. Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

This is the song that got me into barbershop. I didn't even know what barbershop was then. I was amazed at the depth and prominence of the bass and the angelic tones of the tenor singing the melody. I am indebted to the Suntones for opening up the intoxicating world of BBS to me.

My father,Johnny Wearing, had a few opportunities to sing a few with these fine gentlemen. Many years ago, Dad is 92 now he competed against this quartet at International. Till this day he says there is no question as to who solidified his desire to improve as a tenor. He said that when they performed this song .he cried. As a highly decorated war veteran as a tailgunner in WW2 Dad didn't get emotional too much.I remember twice, when Russ Seely died and also my Mom.Just sayin...

what a shame that it is as they say, "no good deed shall go unpunished". I can think of no better work than to bring beauty into a dreary world and to encourage others to seek after such refinement. It is sad, The Barbershop Harmony Society, does not see it that way. For what you have done here and for the efforts you have made,I salute you. It is such a beautiful song, I know it's haunting melodious refrains would move many to seek after more of the same. Thank you very much.

To all Suntones fans, you're not alone; I feel you--a magical blend and wonderful musicality and interpretation. They are one of the Gold standards, along with Boston Common and perhaps, of the newer generation, Crossroads. As to those looking for this arrangement, I suggest you contact Harlen Wilson's son, Todd, Tenor of Acoustix and Bass of others; he might have it. It's not on the Suntones' "Complete Works", either volumes 1 or 2. And as I discovered, Todd's perhaps temporary quartet, "Sons of the Tones", is one of the most musical quartets I've ever heard. Less interested in "busting a chord" than "serving the music." Give them a listen. Gorgeous stuff.

There has never been a better quartet than the Suntones and I seriously doubt there will ever be one. It seems like all the "newer" quartets just sing loud and high pitched, no doubt they are good, but this is so much more pleasing to my ear. Incredible blend! Sorry bdmyers100 but your comment that the Gas House Gang and the Suntones are comparable is amusing to me. If anybody ever saw them live in their prime, I'm sure you'll all agree they were way ahead of their time.
