"Would princesses find him attractive? If they have good taste they would!" After years and years of Mario is a sociopath and bad brother online, it was nice to see them being good loving brothers throughout the film. I was smiling just as much as you were my friend.

@@pundertalefan4391usually sequels of animated movies tend to be better than the first. Look at Sonic the Hedgehog 2. That movie was MILES ahead of the first one. I REALLY loved giving Mario the "doesn't know when to quit" theme. It suits his character so much. Like they made sure he's still a nice, kind, stand up guy who wants to help people, but they also made him just a bit of a stubborn, reckless meathead. Similarly Luigi was less of a coward and more just cautious and generally socially anxious, I loved that characterization for him too. And it's not like either can't be extrapolated from the games.

The entire movie is an absolute love letter to the games and I think that's what I love most about it. There were so many references and nods, both in-your-face and very subtle blink-and-you'll-miss, but it never felt like it was too much. The scene on the rainbow road is one of my favorites, both with it's attention to detail and how the karts are actually driven in-game. 10 out of 10, would recommend and watch again.

I simply look at it like this: This was Miyamoto’s Mario movie. He invented Mario over 35 years ago, and this was his vision the entire time since. I would take that ten times out of ten, and then another ten, over Oscar bait, critic bait schlock that takes liberties and couldn’t be further from authentic. It was brilliant. It was as much a quintessential Mario product as any Mario game. I loved it and I’m grateful to live in the blessed timeline I do.

While I do wish Luigi was on screen a bit more during the second act, I absolutely adored the brotherly love he and Mario have with one another (that one scene before the final battle got in my feels fr, it was grossly sweet and I’m so glad they didn’t shy way from showing them actually care about one another)

That's pretty much it, I just saw an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri and one of the things Nintendo and Miyamoto feared was that their characters and story would be misrepresented as it was in the 1993 film. Chris Meledandri was really respectful and made sure Miyamoto saw all of the developments before anything ever progressed. Nintendo and Miyamoto had a real close hand in this which is why it's a faithful adaption and it's exactly what you expect a Mario movie to be since they made Mario to begin with.

So glad to hear you had a good time. I can't wait to see this. Mario was a key part of my childhood and I can't wait to sit down with my brothers, watch it, and remember all the fun of playing the old games before we went to school each morning.

You know what this means. With this success. This makes a historical turn-around. Isn't it kind of wild, if not ironic, that with this movie that means that King Kong and Donkey Kong are shared by the same movie studio, even if they are more like a joint studio branch with Nintendo movie studios. The companies that had a scrap for which Kirby had to come to the rescue (not the pink one, but inspired the name); got together and now Universal can show off both.

I agree, it's a beautiful ride. My only critique would be that some scenes could have benefited from being fleshed out a little, especially regarding the characters relationships. Maybe the movie could've been 10-15 minutes longer.

I thought it was so much fun! Loved every minute of it. When I read the critics, I thought the story was gonna be crap but with great visuals. They got it so wrong. The story is warm and has so much heart. It actually got me choked up by the end when **SPOILER ALERT** Mario saves Luigi and then Luigi saves Mario. So so many good feels. It deserves all the tickets sold because this is a true love letter to us Nintendo gamers

Yeah. It was not only a great moment, but it really feels like something that was conveyed well in the videogames, as well. As with the games they are together, or Luigi’s Mansion, Luigi always seems to find his courage whenever either they are together or when specifically Mario is in trouble and he’s put in the situation where it’s up to him to save his brother.

What are the main things that confused me is when they got there Luigi got captured Mario made it clear he had to save his brother as quickly as possible. During that time they had several day and night cycles so I couldn't tell if this happened over the course of like 5 days or weather it was supposed to indicate that stuff was happening at the same time but if it's that one I do not get that impression. The only other thing I can really think of is a criticism because overall I enjoyed it with Mario's Dad finally said he was proud of his son after he was super saiyan fighting a crazy Dragon monster through the streets of New York and I was like "That's what it took so you could be proud of your son!?" That was kinda weird also...

Some people need to chill. You're not getting an epic tale out of "The Princess is in another castle." Or in this case, Luigi. It's just a fun romp in the mushroom kingdom.

I think that this film does it's job, in the sense it gives Mario and Nintendo fans a lot of nostalgia but in a way that still makes the film accessible to people who aren't familiar with all the games. When they walk through the Bob-om Battlefield you can still enjoy the ride even if you've never played Mario 64. And considering how MANY games there are I think that was essential. I also think the self-referential humour throughout was a good move as I don't think all the wacky stuff and characters from all the games would work otherwise. However I do think there are multiple problems with the overall story. By far my biggest complaint is how the Warp Pipe under Brooklyn is never explained and neither is Peach's origin story. What's worse is that it looks like their stories are being set up but then nothing more comes of it. But the long-time Mario fans are apparently overjoyed with this film and that's what matters most.

I waited to see the movie myself before I watched/read anything - spotify really tried to ruin Bowser's song for me several times, and I saw it this past weekend. Being old enough to say that I literally grew up with Mario Bros, this really hit all of the nostalgia goodness I wanted while also being gorgeously animated. Is it a "good" story? That's subjective, but I thought it was fine. I've told people that 10-years-old me (whose favorite movie was Space Jam) would've loved the hell out of it, no criticisms. Even as an MB novice, I was able to giddily pick up on the references quite a bit in order to point them out to my sister. And i cannot get over the art style and soundtrack. Just... *chef's kiss* It's just such a fun movie overall, and, y'know, I might see it again, too.

I could understand why a critic wouldn't be too hyped on this movie. As a Mario superfan though, I have no serious complaints. I will absolutely take a sequel to this movie if they continue to bring and up the quality.

The fact the movie was paced so well for how Mario as a game feels. It didnt really miss a beat keeping up with my attention and the beat of the story. That was legitimately impressive. As its oddly something a lot of Nintendo Games fail at.

Man I loved this movie. I laughed and perhaps cried at a few parts, specifically the music. I’m one of those 80s-90s kids that grew up with Nintendo so I felt like this movie spoke directly to my inner soul. Legit I’m like one step away from making Nintendo my entire personality 😅 But real talk, if the soundtrack doesn’t win any sort of awards it will be sad times because wow, they went HARD. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack most of the day today! My only gripe is yeah, I wish the movie was a bit longer to allow some of the scenes to expand more. Like I woulda loved to see more of the Rainbow Road sequence.

I have to see it again! It was so good! Yes, they did play it safe but that's okay. I'm fine that this was a simple Mario story to see if it could have a sequel. I'm sure there was so much that could have been in the movie but some things had to be cut to make the movie work. For what it was, I thought it was fun. The score really is fantastic for it and I got so much out of it visually.

I don’t know how Luigi being a scaredy-cat helps Mario become stronger (besides motivation), that’s not what I got at all from the climax, what I got was Luigi’s bravery finally stepping up to help/save Mario. Their character development came in the form of how much they mean to each other, not how well they balance each other out. Even in the beginning with the dog, the plumbing wouldn’t had been as much of a disaster if Luigi wasn’t so scared of him and needing Mario to constantly bail em out. Where the critic disparity comes in is in how the movie’s great if you’re a Mario fan, which most of its audience obviously is, but pretty disposable if you’re not a fan. I would tell people who don’t care about Mario to skip it, but fans to rush out. Having said that, most Illumination movies in general are skippable and should have similar ratings, so there was some clear anti-gamer bias going on.

Couldn't agree more with your thoughts and review (except for the voices since I've watched it in Italian, absolutely rewatching it in English and also Japanese as soon as the DVDs come out or if I find them elsewhere before), as a big Mario and Nintendo fan this movie was pure joy despite its issues, in fact my only personal gripe is that it's short, wanted to see even more of it (of course without going overboard)!

There are two main things that keep the movie from being a 10/10 for me. The pacing like you mentioned, I think it needed like an extra 30 minutes to breath. I would've like to have seen the scene with Peach and Mario meeting for the first time be expanded a bit. The other is that Luigi really needed more screentime. Put him in the throne room in the cage so he has to interact with Bowser. Charlie Day is criminally underused as Luigi. One thing I absolutely adored though was the relationship between Peach and Mario. There's very clearly something there but they don't go heavy handed with it. There's never a point where Mario has to outright rescue Peach, there's never a scene where Peach kisses Mario on the cheek, there's no major romance stuff. Instead the two of them are just kind of lightly flirty throughout the whole movie, in a way that almost feels like they don't realize they're doing it, and it ends up being very cute.
