If you use a sword, you'll receive zero EXP for a kill. That's the drawback, and the reason why you were so underleveled and had to hit enemies a million times to kill them. If you hadn't used the sword, you'd be at a higher level and could have killed the enemies faster. You should only use the sword if you're overleveled and just need to quickly get through enemies. There is also a micro skill that lets you shrink down so you can get under those spikes without the dragon.

Being only like 5 years old when I used to have SNB, I never got very far, but I have very fond memories of playing aimlessly as a kid lol. Though it may not be a good game, that theme song still fuckin rocks all these years later.

Regarding your AVGN rant question; I actually found and subbed to your channel through your Chrono Cross vid. I really liked seeing someone actually engage with the material instead of just surface level parroting and vitriol. I quit watching AVGN years ago for never offering more than just that.

for anyone that might play this game. If you use the sword, you're supposed to hit with the tip of the sword. It does more damage, and doesn't knock down the enemy as easily. Just wanted to mention that after seeing 7:30 I can't disagree with a lot of the points made in the video, but I did enjoy this game when I was younger.

Gonna disagree. This game was originally meant to be a NES game, they upgraded the graphics and music for snes, and were off to the races. This game, despite everything, has one of the best soundtracks for the snes. It is massively ambitious; it's an rpg like final fantasy, a beat em up like streets of rage, a platformer for the training parts like ninja gaiden, and I'm not sure how to explain the boss fights, theh are almost like rock paper scissors? Theres a better comparison, I dont know it. But this one, little and overlooked game? The ambition is there, the charm is there, this was basically a NES game that punched WAY above its weight class.

This is one of those games that my friends and I played it not because it was better, but because we had so few games that you just played everything into the ground. I remember I had rented this one for a weekend and I realized I didn't like it after about 20 minutes. But boy did I play the shit out of it for that weekend, because it was something different to put in the console for a couple days.

It gets worse. This is like the 4th game in the Super Chinese series but the first to come to the west. They all have this hybrid RPG/beat em up jank thing going. One positive thing tho, these games are coop. Very rare to find coop jrpgs.

@@JasonGravesPoser probably for the best. It's been a while since I gave it a go but I'm pretty sure there is friendly fire. There's something so appealing to me about the counter intuitiveness of co-op retro rpgs tho. Speaking of, might I suggest another absurd snes game? Where Ninja boy is a jrpg with beat em up mechanics, Ultimate Fighter is a beat em up with turn based battles. Culture Brain is all about dem genre mashups.

70? That's not even half the rpgs on the SNES, even omitting anime ones or ones without translations that's still lacking quite a bit of them. Also looking at the ones you've done so far you even missing bigger ones like the SaGa & Mana games which are definitely available in English and even avaliable on modern consoles.

one thing you didn't mention though is that super ninja boy is a two-player simultaneous rpg. obviously you had nobody to play it with (low blow) but if you had like a little brother, growing up with a snes in the 90s, playing it two player was a blast. the game sucked single player, but with two players it's a fun "party game", laughing together at how bad it is.

This is not a slight against you, I'm sure you did the best you could, but it's ridiculous looking back how we were gaslighted into wearing those stupid masks OUTDOORS. Viruses do not transmit very well at all in outdoors conditions so wearing the mask outside only harms the wearer, and besides, most people had inadequate masks that didn't cover the mouth and nose well at all and which had to be constantly adjusted, furthering the transmission of viruses via your hands when you constantly had to touch your mask. Utterly senseless. :D BUT good on you for being considerate of others and following your conscience, however useless it was in the end. We were all victims of the times.
