I'm sad I missed out on this challenge, though like you I imagine I would have found the super small books quite difficult. Maybe I'll join you in December when you give it another go haha. Excited to see your reviews on The Demon Cycle series (haven't read) and especially Memories of Ice (have read, loved and still coping lol). As always, lovely video Kathi. The casual, cozy ambience of your videos is always a treat ☺

OH! And Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is great. I read it years ago. If you haven't watched Blade Runner 2049, I recommend it. I ended up liking it better than the original and this book (sacrilegious, I know).

Thank you so much for the kind words. I’m so glad you are enjoying my videos. I’m sure I will do this challenge again next year if not this summer. I’m hoping to get my MOI review out soon but I haven’t finished the Demon Cycle series yet. I’m a big movie buff so yes I have seen the Blade Runner films. I preferred the original over the book.

When you talk about misfortune is chosen in random, i have just read a YA The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Beautiful young lives were attacked by cancers with gloomy outlook. It is very moving and it gave me a similar conclusion that no matter what kind of life we were bestowed, the important thing is to fulfill it and live with quality.
@NerdyKathi4 ай бұрын
That sounds like a moving and yet tragic book.

Thank you Mindy. You should try Aeronaut's Windlass it was a blast.

Hi Kathi, thank you so much for the wrap up video of the reading challenge. I wanted to participate but I went on a holiday with family and my reading plans changed, so I fell off the wagon. I don’t have a preference for short or long books, as long as I enjoy the story. 🥰

Look at you reading some classics! You have intrigued me about Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilych. Might have to pick that up one day. I am enjoying the short stories by Agatha Christie's Autumn Chills which has Poirot, Marple and other characters she created. I am quite enjoying them; some have been made into PBS movies.
@NerdyKathi4 ай бұрын
Actually I generally read a classic each month. I think the Autumn Chills is simply a new rebinding of Christie’s short stories, most of which I’ve read.

You had a successful winter! For me, the perfect length of a book is around 250 pages. I've not read any over 700 this summer, but have read 2 short ones. I Who Have Never Known Men by Harpman (very good SF) and a children's book about a dog - Because of Winn-Dixie by DeCamillo - also very good! Glad that you are discovering that good books can come in small packages too. 🙂

Winter lends itself perfectly to reading and I definitely prefer large books. Glad you enjoyed those you read.

@NerdyKathi I forgot in my earlier comment to mention my thoughts on Evanovich. She has about a dozen series. I've tried the in-between, Full, Fox and Recovery Agent, and IMHO, none are as good as the regular Stephanie Plum ones and of course, some of the numbered ones are better than others. And, I just found Daggerspell at my used bookstore!! I'm excited to try another new-to-me fantasy author! Looking forward to more videos!

I’ve heard the same about Evanovich’s other series and ohhh I hope you enjoy Daggerspell.

Hello! From north Florida I got ahead of myself, and already told you my super small read couple of months back! 😂 reiterating I read T Kingfisher’s Thornhedge which I enjoyed very much. It was a dark / fractured fairytale reinterpretation of Sleeping Beauty, with a huge twist ; I expect nothing less from TK. However, I hate to disappoint, But my supersized was less successful, And I only managed to get through the first 200 pages of the three Musketeers,but I’m actually enjoying it very much . I’m also trapped through half of the Wheel of time Volume 1, But I’m not rushing through it. Congratulations to everyone who did manage to complete their supersized challenge 💯💐💯

Hello! T Kingfisher is definitely on my list to try soon. Three Musketeers is one I feel I know so well having seen the films and it is such a big book, like Wheel of Time. These challenges are meant to be fun. If we succeed, all well and good, if not, there’s always next time. Thank you so much for joining in.

Well you did great in this challenge heheh. I failed at big books but I read many short ones. I read the death of Ivan many years ago, and I found it sad, specially because his family didn't care about him. Oh you have to read brothers Karamazov, it is an amazing book, well full of details and long but I enjoyed it very much.
@NerdyKathi3 ай бұрын
Big books can be a challenge and I thought you finished the Dune books. I assumed one would be a big book. I really want to read Brothers Karamazov soon, I’m just not sure when.

@@NerdyKathi I have read some russian classic. well, you know? the known ones: Anna Karenina, War and peace . But Brother's karamazov is my favorite. Many philosophical and religious ideas. I hope you will enjoy it.

Oh, The Brothers Karamazov, please do yourself that favour and read it. For me, it's not just a book. It's The Book. Some years later after reading it, I travelled Russia, visited St. Petersburgh and place where Dostoeyvsky lived and wrote the The Brothers Karamazov. It was strong feeling that such great book was written in that particular not-that-big flat...
@NerdyKathi4 ай бұрын
I intend to, just not sure when. It would have made the book a much richer experience visiting where Dostoyevsky lived and wrote.

I have to say I don't have that many of what could be termed "Novellus Giganticus" in my collection; I much prefer the shorter books that were published in the '60's and '70's - quality over quantity. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" was a bit of a let down when I read it after watching Ridley Scott's movie; given the Blade Runner title and the movie artwork on the cover, I assumed one was a fairly faithful adaptation of the other. The movie was by far better than the source material. K W Jeter's: "The Edge of Human" and two subsequent novels serve as excellent sequels to the movie, and at the same time resolving many of the discrepancies between the movie and the original novel.
@NerdyKathi4 ай бұрын
I think the book was deeper but I too preferred the film. I actually have Jeter’s books so will have to read them soon.

I am about halfway through The Death of Ivan Ilych, I agree with what you said about their shallowness. Shallow and money hungry.

I liked Blade Runner a lot, too. You are obviously a woman of taste and culture. I didn't like Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep all that much, though. I saw Blade Runner 2 or 3 times before I read the book and felt the book just didn't come up to the movie,
@NerdyKathi4 ай бұрын
Thank you Julie. The movie has a great atmosphere but the book is much deeper I felt. Not as much an adrenaline rush though.
