Don Roberto Rotherham came to El Salvador in 1973 and stayed there forever. Today, at 73 years of age, not much has changed. He is still ripping up the perfect point surf of El Salvador and still serving the best food you will find in the country at the world famous Punta Roca Restaurant with his local wife Marta and their family.

My first trip to El Salvador was in 2012 and we rented boards from Señor Roberto and would eat breakfast at his place in the point after surfing. He is absolutely right about the culture and people. Great experience and great people! I been back 15 times since 2012. We have had kids since and they’ve been 4x and we go back in a few months! We love El Salvador!

I met Bob and Eric in '73 on my first trip to Central America. I was too young to rent a car so I cabbed it to la libertad. It was in la libertad where I met the bikers who helped me earn the money for my first boat. I sailed through again with a band onboard and the next time I sailed through Bob's wife still remembered me for the band High light of the trip through was spending some quality time enjoying the Salvardorian drinking culture with Bob. He shared classic war stories about the 12 year civil war. No one could touch. Legend. I met Tony Roberts aboard the Indies Trader along with Jimmy Rotherham. Bob was classicly too humble about his son Jimmy. Not only the first sponsored surfer but the first world class talent to emerge from El Salvador. Looking forward to surfing with Bob on my next trip through hopefully this season. Thanks for sharing this inspiring clip.

We have to keep it that way, affordable and the rest we have. The waves, the beautiful weather,mountains, and alot of good humble people. When I moved to Los Ángeles in 1980 I felt the difference in the way people treat you. I wanted to go back even do we have the war. 👍🇸🇻🇨🇦🌊🌋🙏🍻

What do you do if need serious medical attention? How are the MS13 gangs where you are.🤔

The hospital is nearby. What President Bukele is doing to confront the gangs is well publicized. Just like in L.A. the gangs extort business owners and battle with each other and the authorities. They are not known to target tourists, although this is the type of place to roll with a guide if you want to explore.
