The Los Angeles Lakers had a quiet summer, with no major surprises or standout moves. They’re still waiting on a significant free-agent signing or trade that could change the team's direction, but it looks like they’ll be heading into the new season with pretty much the same roster.
While the Lakers didn’t make any big acquisitions in terms of free agents or trades, they might have struck gold in the NBA Draft. Though rookie guard Bronny James has been getting a lot of attention since the draft and during Summer League, another rookie, Dalton Knecht, could be the one who surprises everyone.
Knecht, who stood out during the Summer League, has the potential to be an impactful player for head coach JJ Redick and the Los Angeles Lakers right from the start of the season. The former Tennessee guard is being viewed as one of the top prospects, according to the latest Rookie of the Year odds from BetOnline.
According to BetOnline, Knecht holds the seventh-best odds to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award for the 2024-25 season. Ahead of him in the odds are Matas Buzelis from the Bulls, Stephon Castle from the Spurs, Alex Sarr from the Wizards, Zaccharie Risacher from the Hawks, Zach Edey from the Grizzlies, and Reed Sheppard from the Rockets.
Drafted by the Lakers with the 17th overall pick, Knecht, who was once projected to be a top 10 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, ended up in Los Angeles, where he could be competing for a championship right out of the gate if the team stays healthy this season.
Given the right opportunity, Knecht could emerge as a strong Rookie of the Year contender. He’s capable of scoring in all areas of the court and has already proven to be a committed defender. With most of the opponents’ attention focused on Lakers superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Knecht will have plenty of chances to shine. The 23-year-old, who led the SEC in scoring with 21.7 points per game during his lone season at Tennessee, stands at 6'6" and could become a key player for the Lakers, providing much-needed scoring and defense beyond what the team’s superstars offer.
Knecht is a gym rat who loves basketball and is determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.

If the Lakers do not have someone to go against the likes of big men Jokic, Durant, Embid, Towns, Antekoompu & other Centers; and, the equally strong & tall power forwards, then the Lakers shall be just competing for the elimination phases not really a threat as Division or NBA Champion. Let us just say the point & shooting guards are O.K. but not enough, while L. James & A. Davis could spell the difference but not for long w/ very strong competition.
