Over the last 3 decades, the Omega Seamaster has become one of the most iconic luxury dive watches thanks to a certain fictional British spy! But looking beneath that! What makes the modern Omega seamster 300 still adored and why is it I could never own one?
Why I Could NEVER Buy An Omega Seamaster 300.

Thank you to everyone who has commented so far! It seems some of you are defending this bezel like it’s a family member which is fine! Although this is the first SMP I’ve had on the channel , I’ve handled 2 others with similar bezels! Not to mention the No Time To Die Titanium one which again had the same bezel action . No back play! Just light and not the refined ratchet I’ve gotten from Panerai, Tudor, Rolex etc. overall the build of this watch is superb and congrats to all that own . But let’s not call this a fake and disrespect Watchfinder ay!;) Love to all

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR maybe they made it tight (and therefore horrible to turn) to stop accidental turning so you don’t get a wrong reading while your timing is active. A solution to a problem nobody has and resulting in a tight grating tinny action that is beyond hideous.

I am going to be an Omega apologist here... An old watchmaker told me the Omega's scalloped bezel is meant to be operated from the top rather than its side while wearing gloves because it is easier to access underwater with a lower risk of snagging the glove or having a bunched up wetsuit or other equipment around wrist in the way. It was difficult to retrain myself after a decade with coin-edge bezels but now it makes sense to me.

Second thought: it would be ridiculous to think Omega could design so many calibers (which require a lot of precision) but could not get a bezel right, which is not something crazy in terms of difficulty or tolerances comparing to calibers.

I feel like the additional thickness and lug to lug of the most recent generations paired with the non-tapering bracelet really kills it. I am really tempted by the 2231.50 from the mid 2000’s though. Sword hands, big triangle, super thin, and titanium for 2k-3k USD

An interesting review. I have the chronograph (cal. 3330). I like mine because it is very showy 😁 My bezel action is much better, not sure what's wrong with that one. The helium escape valve on the chronograph is much better balanced out by the extra chrono buttons, but it also doubles as a secret button for the date setting 😉 Mine obviously doesn't have the wavy dial, which I think makes it look less cluttered and the finish on the bezel is much better than this one. Mine's also 44mm, so a proper size too 😉

Never had an accidental bezel movement on my SMP because of the way the edges are designed. The DNA of the SMP is as solid as the Porsche 911. If you changed it it wouldn't be a SMP. Sidebar; I've never understood the bezel fidget thing. Bezels are for timing. I have never once witnessed or heard at a Redbar or watch meet up someone fidget a bezel. 🤷‍♂️

I prefer my c.2007 version...but great that Omega continue to develop the style to cater to different tastes. I love the wave pattern used at that time and much prefer the seahorse on the case back to the display caseback in the model you had. Great review and I agree 100%. The dial is beautiful, the watch is well built and the movement is accurate. However, the scalloped edge bezel is difficult to turn. The skeleton hands are difficult to see in low light. The bracelet and the HEV are not my cup of tea. I tried many dial colors on, but bought a Tudor BB58 instead. My pal bought a 300 Professional and we swapped watches for a day. He liked my Tudor better.

I’ve owned a seamaster since 2015. The bracelet was the main reason I got it, I think it’s lovely. Tbh I wasn’t impressed by the accuracy when it was new. Gaining about 4 seconds per day. But now after 8 years and no servicing it is bang on, it has lost just 2 seconds in three weeks since I last set the time. Love this watch and it’s only taken off my wrist when I play golf.

Thanks for another great video. I own the original Goldeneye quartz version and it is one of the watches that I will never sell. It is smaller and thinner than the automatic and the aluminum bezel insert gives it a lovely vintage look. I am surprised how easily the bezel spins as it is definitely not so on mine. It is definitely hard to grip, but is designed to push down from above when turning. Mine being almost 20 years old, the lume is still amazing.

Great vid as always Russ but a couple of points, The dial is ceramic not sapphire, and the crystal is slightly domed. I also 100% agree with the comments from a number of others, that particular watch has something wrong with the bezel. I can't even get remotely close to turning mine with one finger, it sounds far better than that one and turning mine with those gloves on would be impossible!

Most SMP300 owners seem to comment here that the bezel in their watches is difficult to turn because of the shape. But you could turn yours too easily just with your fingertips. It suggests there’s something wrong in that watch. But if so, shouldn’t be at that price level.

I own the Omega white dial 300m. I bought it on the bracelet but swapped it out for the OEM rubber strap. The white dial looks great on black rubber! Also, no problems with the bezel on mine being too loose. The bracelet (when I had it on) is very comfortable and the on-the-fly micro adjustment is great. But, I do agree, it's time for a refresh on the bracelet with some tapering .

I’m an Englishman who now lives in the States. This gives me an interesting outside view on my own culture. I find it intriguing that we care so much about what other people think. We have this propensity of creating a shared caricature for the owner of things: “a Rolex wearer”, “an Audi driver”, “a Stella drinker”. So now we have this pitiful habit where we might like that watch, that car, or that drink, but can’t allow ourselves to enjoy it because you’ll worry people will think you’re a “ponce” for wearing this, or a “lout” for drinking that. In America, if you like it, you buy it and enjoy it. If you like the Omega SMP but worried that people will think you’re an Esquire poser sniffing magazine pages, just buy the watch! Be confident in your own style and personality. The watch doesn’t make you into someone. YOU bring your own flair. The Daytona didn’t make Paul Newman who he was-Newman liked it, wore it, then everyone admired his swagger and wanted to copy it. These caricatures for things are daft and cause everyone to have a complex about themselves instead of BEING themselves and doing what they like. After all, what could be more caricature-ish than being the ‘zaney’ ‘mad’ KZbin watch reviewer that somehow gives you the license to be unabashed in your criticism and ridicule of people and things? 🃏

My 2531.80 from 2016 is possibly the best Seamaster for those with smaller wrists and who are put off by the He valve. Ok it doesn’t have the coaxial movement, but ETA and still a certified chronometer. Smaller, thinner, and the bezel after 17 years is still tight and ratchety. Almost 2mm thicker, if they made it a solid caseback, Omega could slim it down a bit.

I own a 2007 and the action is qite good but I've never handled the newer Models. I think if I was to buy a current release I would go with the Aqua Terra.

Sold my Seamaster 300 and bought the titanium planet ocean due to difficulties in turning the bezel. The planet ocean is a chunky one, but in Ti helps with the wearability. The bezel action is not a great action, but at least you can turn it!

I’ve owned my black 300 for over 2 years now and agree with a lot of your points. The bracelet style isn’t my favorite but it is very comfortable and the micro adjustment works great. The bezel does take some getting used to and has gotten easier over time. However I don’t understand your concern about it moving on its own. I wear it everyday and it has never moved on its own. I prefer the scalloped bezel because it wears under a cuff great and I’ve only been in the water twice with it. Also it does seem to turn easier under water than when dry, so there is that. Mine is just under +2 seconds a day and very consistent at that difference. If you like the style, it is a great watch. If you don’t, then get something else.

Great review. I have the 2222.80, reissue of the goldeneye. CoAxial. 36mm!!. I would not trade it for all the money in the world.(almost). You avoided the HEscapement. Smart. I saw review where he pretend that it was remote detonator or a laser... The bracelet needs to be updated!! The '57 trilogy seamaster is the best watch ever! I like the scallop bezel it gives it character! Look forward to the next one.

And yes... they should just bring out the old broad sword hand seamasters of old.. Solid case back, 39mm, by say 12mm thick, and a better more elegant bracelet... as you say - "have the keys to my car"

I appreciate the video but this seems very off, and I suspect this watch may be a fake. The bezel on mine does not feel easy to turn, and the lume is so bright I can almost use it as a flashlight. The lume on yours looked so dim. Pretty suspicious if you ask me.

Great show! I own a 1999 Brosnan era Seamaster Pro. The Bezel on that is tighter than tight. But yeah the scalloped bezel is just no way as grippy as a coin edge. I love the watch for its stand out looks and overall quality. But if I was going diving properly I would use another watch definitely like a Sub, a CWC Diver or a my Christopher Ward Lympstone.

Too loud and tacky for my taste. Got an 2254.50 to scratch that Seamaster itch - the bezel is useless but to me it overall looks way better - much more like a tool watch for grownups than the shiny, blingy offerings of today. And it wears so nice - on a NATO it pancakes on the wrist.

I love my SM300m in blue, i rather like the non coin edge, after setting it doesn’t get bumped moved no matter what I’m doing, i love the bracelet mainly because it doesn’t look like an Oyster style copy, the accuracy is fantastic, 1/2 second per day, all around winner.

I own the blue dial Seamaster automatic 2531.80.00 from the Brosnan era, I bought it new, can you believe for £1175.00 back in 2001. I think the bracelet looks a bit dated now so wear it with a Milanese strap which has really improved it. I've tried it with a Nato but it didn't seem to work, also tried it with a couple of MN straps which work well if you get the strap colours correct, mine are dark blue with white centre stripe and dark blue with red centre stripe. The bezel has never been a problem, the timekeeping is bang on and I don't think it looks very flash compared with the Seamaster reviewed here. Mine is slightly smaller in all dimensions, diameter 41mm, lug to lug 47mm and thickness 12mm and is a darker blue and certainly not as obvious as the latest models. I love wearing it, it has a sense of style, which is something I don't particularly have :) I also have several Casios before the Mad one says anything. Love your reviews but I can see the wife getting her own show anytime now.

Forstner bracelets makes a speedy style bracelet along with a few other styles and that’s the only way I’d buy one of these. I’d get a black seamaster 300 with on the rubber and just buy a forstner bracelet. Also, I think the planet ocean 39.5mm is a better watch in proportions and look😅

I've got the Green (Seaweed) SMP300 and i love it. I agree that the bezel is tricky to grip and compared to my Pelagos 39 it feels poor (your comb analogy is spot on), but the bezel on mine can't be moved with one finger. Its very secure feeling, and with the poor grip it can be difficult to use! I think i might be in the minority group regarding the bracelet. I love the chunky non tapered design and don't suffer any comfort issues with it.

Is it bad that I think they should just kill the bracelet and replace it with the mesh? Or make mesh a retail configuration, instead of having to buy it separately? That's not gonna happen...🤣

I have both the dive watch and the chronograph seamasters. The bezel on the chronograph is pretty much like you described though the bezel on the driver is much stiffer. In other words any respectable watch seller should be able to sort out a looser bezel if needed.

That’s interesting, I own a 2005 Seamaster 300 pro chronograph and although I agree the scalloped edge makes it more difficult to grip than some watches, the action is actually really good, nice sound, no back play what so ever and a good amount of resistance. It’s a shame the new Omega’s seem to of gone backwards!! 👍

I had a 2000 model. The bezel, It was always fine. I prefer it to the new one, as I like the sculpted waves on the dial to the new wavy lines. The bracelet was rubbish though, divers extension snapped when I was trying to get back on board. Let's just say there's an expensive watch waiting for someone to discover between Owensboro Kentucky and Rockport Indiana, in the Ohio River.

@@dazherbert2782 mine is the plain black version, exactly the same as the America cup limited edition they did, with the sub dials at 9, 6 and 3 - much better balance. Bracelet was okay for the period, although the divers extension does keep coming un done every time I take it off!🤦‍♂️ Lume is great and keeps fantastic time.
