Kodak Aerochrome has an origin story unlike any other film. In this video, I share the surprising history of Aerochrome from its creation to cancellation, plus its unexpected resurgence thereafter. This video is Part One of a two-part video, with Part Two focused on digitally recreating the look of Aerochrome film.

Another video was just talking about the surreal effect it gave despite it being the story behind those photos and it felt a little uncomfortable to admire an aesthetic while almost ignoring the war torn place the photos were shot in. I thought, at first, that the red and magenta tones would at least signify the bloodshed but this in-depth history made the creative choice of Richard Mosse clearer and made more sense as well. Glad I came across this video.

Fantastic look at a mostly forgotten film stock. Its hands down my favorite film and still have 50 rolls of medium format EIR and 17 rolls of 35mm. Living in an arid region I only get to shoot in spring so I go through 4-5 rolls a year of it unless I get to travel to a place that warrants the stock.

Todd, another great piece. Interesting how Aerochrome leaves skin tones pretty true. With my full-spectrum IR-converted camera (and after channel swap), skin tones render much lighter and less saturated. Frankly, Aerochrome is the infrared I always wanted. Looking forward to Part II.

I used to use two types of this film in the 70's. As I recall on the early type you had to use the red dot on your focus ring while the later version it wasn't required. I used it in summer mostly for locating old cabin sites, mining activity and old trails when I lived in Girdwood, Alaska. I also used it in the winter for experimenting with different filters and winter scenes. Butch King flew me around in his Citabria.

I remember this stuff as Kodak Infrared Aero Ektachrome, Process E-4, ASA 100? that was used to create striking LP album covers in the 1960's. I did try a roll back then, marveling at "red trees and yellow sky" of the "normal" Yellow filter vista. Then I went back to Kodachrome and Ektachrome, since Reality is mind expanding. An E-6 version wasn't even a rumor when a job change required me to hang up my film cameras in the 1990's. So there was a (sorta) E=6 version after all? Oh well, progress leaves a lot of things in the ditch of history, eh?

Analog film has 'something' that makes it pop versus digital. Guess we will see in Part 2 if that 'something' is in the film or can Lightroom reproduce it. (as a chemist, I would doubt it)

Epic content I'm a journalist with a fine art background, and the work of Richard Mosse was what originally made me take that transition to start working in Journalism due to that crossover. I had the thought that I was really interested in questioning the mediums and representation of subjects in journalism and I guess put more effort into the overall idiosyncratic ways we can find to represent a story that fit better than what the conventional already does. And the viewer questioning that representation again is really powerful and multi-layered than simply conveying information. Anyway I'm just rambling but for a small channel your production quality is fantastic so I hope you can get the subscribers and audience you deserve later on down the line.

Absolutely fantastic video, it's so good to see a thorough breakdown of this wonderful film's history! Very much looking forward to what you do in the second part. Ordinarily I wouldn't hop in the comment section just to plug my own stuff, but on my channel I've just uploaded a video demonstrating a digital simulation of the Aerochrome look that I think comes fairly close, at least to Aerochrome shots I've seen taken through orange filters. If you give it a watch, I'd love to hear what you think!

I think that it also sparked Lomography to create their purple film that looks like infrared but isnt. The hues are almost the same but I think that instead of capturing infrared, they used pigments that would turn a certain color when a certain wavelength of color would hit it.

In 1964 an international team from the Soviet Union and Cuba made a film, "I am Cuba" or "Soy Cuba." From Wikipedia: "The film is shot in black and white, sometimes using infrared film obtained from the Soviet military[2] to exaggerate contrast (making trees and sugar cane almost white, and skies very dark but still obviously sunny). Most shots are in extreme wide-angle and the camera passes very close to its subjects, whilst still largely avoiding having those subjects ever look directly at the camera." The film has many other innovative aspects besides the use of Infrared film -- long continuous seemingly impossible shots controlled via a video feed to a TV set the director brought with him from the Soviet Union.

Hey Todd, great story! I'm a former Kodak employee with years of tech support for both Pro Imaging and Aerial Imaging divisions so of course the "Aerochrome" title caught my eye. Bummer when the market dropped and the E-4 process became so hard to find. One small correction, I think, at 2:30 when you say the red color was a "creative" choice. I recall that it was a simple shift in how the film's color layers represented the light wavelengths. Blue became green, green became visible red, and the red layer represented near infrared (up to 900 nm, much to the chagrin of customers wanting heat sensitivity). Thoughts?
@dominey
@dominey 2 жыл бұрын
How cool! Thanks so much for the comment. The research I found back when I made this video stated that the particular hue that was used to represent infrared was a choice not entirely rooted in the technical, but that’s going on third party info. Sounds like you may know better than anyone! Appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Disappointing that you didn't show any examples of Aerochrome's camouflage detection (I write as an interpreter of aerial images) but that the focus of your arm-waving talk was more about arty uses of the film. However, that approach seems popular with the commentators below.

it breaks my heart to see this false story. it is I alone that brought aerochrome to the world. It was never available to the public before i started the project in 2007. The consumer film available before that was 35mm EIR. This is a different emulsion and never available in any other format. I made it in 120, 4x5, 8x10, 8x20 and 16mm. the video is so full of mistakes. it was all only my idea to bring it to the public. Mosse contacted me and i told him everything i know after years of testing and research. i told him the filters, the camera setup, what to watch out for, potential errors, everything. he did make good use of that info, i must say. the 16mm was not stored in a freezer in California. it all came directly from me here in Germany, although i am from California. i was sweating watching this video. I was not mentioned once and its my project exculsively. Mosse visited me 3 times to buy the film and pick my brain about every aspect of this film material. I had already been shooting the stuff 2 years before he called me. He was not the first or even the 100th customer I had. No, he did not start the thing! The video is just wrong. The film used back then at the beginning of the video was not aerochrome 1443. Sad how Todd talks like everything he is reporting is fact. this is not the truth behind aerochrome. breaks my heart really. hey Todd Dominey, time to call me and get the true story right please! www.aerochrome.shop/about
