Thank you very much Lucy, this fully answered my question and is very helpful. I am not yet in practice (still studying) but certainly struggle with the scenario of dishing out unsolicited advice to acquaintances whose cats have problems and I have to agree with you, it doesn't work, people just close off. In spite of trying to reign it in and if I say something, to do so tactfully, it still fails to inspire change for the better. It's so hard not to say anything when you see cats that need help. You confirmed my concerns when it comes to solicited advice too. I very much appreciate your generously accepting to share your insight into this and your honest and practical advice. I need to find the tools to build my personal resilience and focus on the things that can be done and all the small victories.

It has taken me a long time to accept it to be honest. I would stress and worry about them all, but the job was getting so hard and I wasn't at my best trying to help the next cat that came along. I try and balance my work by helping who I can 1-1, but pushing the more general stuff to help reach the people who aren't really looking to find help! I'm glad to hear you will practicing soon, good luck with your studies! Hopefully I will meet you at a cat event or two one day!

@@lucyhoile-felinebehaviourist I'd love to, and thanks for your help! It's great to connect and talk about these things which are not necessarily taught but can be the source of great anxiety, so discussing them helps.

Hi Lucy- I’m doing the compass cat behaviour course. Do you think there’s enough work/need out there? I’m tired of the dog training scene, so much vitriol and controversy! I’m hoping switching over to cats will be a way to enjoy animal behaviour work more (and of course I love cats!).

Absolutely! There are SO many cats that need help, the challenge is reaching people and helping them understand that they can improve their cats problem behaviours and improve the cat's welfare in the process. It has been a slow burn building my case load, but I am mostly fully booked consistently throughout the year. There is definitely a lot less drama in the cat world than the dog world, the cat professionals I work with or cross paths with are all so lovely and supportive. Good luck with the rest of your studies. Do let me know if you have any other questions, happy to help. Hopefully we will cross paths one day!
