Fig Newtons are my favorite store bought highly processed cookie and never once did I buy them thinking they were "healthy". I know they are just as junk as all the rest but I still eat them. Now I buy them as a once a year treat.

My great grandmother always had these as treats for my sister and me when we were little kids. I’m 64 now. I think I would find them way too sweet now. But they would bring back such memories. ☺️

One of the sadder moments of my life was when I actually looked at the nutrition information panel on a package of Fig Newtons and accepting that half a sleeve wasn't a "single serving". Adulting can be hard.

Oh, yeah, sure. Like resisting the urge of stuffing your fat face with ultra processed foods. For you, adulthood will be mercifully brief, even mercilessly sudden. You will not be missed.

"I bet you can't just eat one!" Very easy to go through them quickly since they're so small and delicious! I usually buy Nell Newman's Fig Newtons because the proceeds also go to their charitable foundation her late beloved father actor and humanitarian Paul Newman began many years ago! I'm sure these can be made at home and doesn't look like they would be hard to make just like making homemade date bars! We're a family of bakers ever since the 1800s when my late beloved paternal grandmother of Pennsylvania Dutch background won Blue Ribbons for her pies and baking at country fairs in eastern PA! My other maternal grandmother was also a great cook/baker and made everything from scratch as well! Their homemade donuts put Dunkin Donuts to shame! My youngest granddaughter wants to be a professional baker , is in the culinary dept in high school and is already baking from scratch and makes wonderful cakes and cookies! We're baking together which is what I used to do with my late beloved mother and grandmothers both born in 1879 and 1887 respectively! Glad to hear Fig Newtons are healthy, have been eating them for decades! But homemade is always better, imho and in the opinion of many other home cooks and bakers!

I still get Fig Newtons once in a while. Don’t believe there are any healthy over processed commercial cookies, but I eat some occasionally. I try to stick to the more simple ones.

I saw something on KZbin that said that the figs used in Fig Newtons commonly had dead wasps in them. I haven't eaten fig Newtons since.

I believe the Nature Bakery brand fig bar are more healthier as they do not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup and is plant based, but moderation is still key.

I eat one piece in the middle of a long workout for energy and it seems to work, besides being delicious.

What did you expect?!? A Fig Newton is roughly equivalent to an Oreo. That's not too bad. It's not as if Mom was dropping them into our lunchboxes as a fruit substitute! But the best takeaway I got from this, probably ever from Mashed, was at the very end. "A quick way of assessing whether a food is ultra processed is whether it was made with machinery or ingredients that you couldn't have in your own kitchen." Something we all should more attention to.

4:21 Canola oil is healthy for you? Very skeptical about this source. I would like to know more about this claim since I've only heard the argument otherwise. I started eating Fig Newtons probably 25 years ago and the notion that they aren't that healthy in general is something I've come to realize, especially when I started buying just figs from grocery stores. Overall good video.

1. ultra processed seed oils, like canola, ARE NOT GOOD FOR YOU , and are not the same as pressed seed oils that can be extracted easily. 2. canola oil tastes like rotting fish 3. who the heck thought fig newtons were a health food? even their add says its "cake"

They sound like a healthy option if you don't eat healthy much. But I eat mostly whole foods high fiber diet, these would be nice only as a small treat every now and then. I wouldn't consider them that healthy, just eat mostly whole plant foods. It is interesting tho that nutrition scientists say canola oil is good for you while social media says canola oil aren't good for you.
