The Swamp Rabbit Trail - Southern End at Lake Conestee Nature Park, Conestee, South Carolina, USA
Swamp Rabbit Trail, Greenville County, South Carolina, USA: Rails to Trails Conservancy cycling, running, and walking trail located in Greenville County, South Carolina and managed by the Greenville County Recreation District. This ride is from the parking lot at the southern end of the Swamp Rabbit Trail on Spanco Drive, just off of Conestee Road, near the Historic Conestee Mill, following The Swamp Rabbit Trail through Lake Conestee Nature Park. At the exit of the parking lot on Henderson Avenue, I turned left onto Henderson Avenue (look for the white Swamp Rabbit directional signs on the road and the SRT mile markers). I then turned right onto Chatham Drive, followed Chatham Drive to its end until it intersected with Churchhill Circle. Turned left on Churchhill Circle and followed it down the hill. You will see the connection to the asphalt trail on your right. I followed it as it reentered Lake Conestee Nature Park property. Followed the SRT signs through the woods. At the end of this section of trail it does become smooth gravel. Very easy to ride on. Right before you reach Mauldin Road, there is a section of trail that floods. The water is approximately one foot deep in this area. If it is just you and your bike, you should be able to ride through it. If you have electronics or children with you when this flooding occurs, you may want to take off your shoes and walk your bike across because you will get wet. The water is still with no current. From this point I continued to follow the trail under Mauldin Road and onto Parkins Mill Road. My intentions were to turn left onto Cleveland Street and follow the trail behind Greenville Technical College towards Cleveland Park, but I missed my turn and continued to the end of Parkins Mill Road until I reached Laurens Road. I turned left onto Decatur Street and followed it into McAlister Square's parking lot. I followed the parking lot in the front of McAlister Square back towards Publix, turned left onto Pleasantburg Drive, and rode with traffic to the intersection with East Faris Road. I turned right onto East Faris Road, and then reconnected with The Swamp Rabbit Trail on the right of East Faris Road, near Cleveland Street. I followed this section of trail into Cleveland Park and onto Cleveland Park Drive where I ended my journey. Shot with a GoPro Hero3: Black Edition mounted to the handlebars of a Univega DS-950 mountain bike. Trail is dry. One section is flooded. This was a sunny day with no chance of showers. Video shot by Richard Scruggs. Total distance of 9.9 miles one way. Small portions of this trip are missing from the video because of failure to turn on the camera at the first boardwalk and battery depletion on Parkins MIll Road. Video was recorded on September 26, 2013.
