The Swedish Peril! Warner Oland and the Birth of Film Propaganda

Dr. Kim Fahlstedt presents "The Swedish Peril! Warner Oland and the Birth of Film Propaganda." This talk was part of the Swenson Center's 40th Anniversary Symposium "The Migration and Beyond: New Perspectives on Swedish-American Relations." Fahlstedt's work investigates the transnational persona of Swedish American actor Warner Oland who portrayed several Chinese and Chinese-Americans, including Charlie Chan. He is currently a postdoc scholar in the Department of Cinema Studies at Stockholm University and published "Chinatown Film Culture: The Appearance of Cinema in San Francisco's Chinese Neighborhood" with Rutgers University Press in 2020.
