A great score and I just love the way the series alternated a brash, hard-hitting opening theme with a soulful, melancholy end one. The Sweeney is such a marvelous show; the cast, the writing, the direction and of course Harry South's iconic score. The series spawned so many imitations but nothing has ever come close to the original and I doubt we'll ever again see two actors who so perfectly embodied their characters as John Thaw and Dennis Waterman. They were bloody wonderful!

This theme evokes the atmosphere of the series and the emotion of Jack, George and their team as each episode concluded....often a bittersweet victory or failure: a colleage, hostage or key witness killed, a botched operation, exhaustion, frustration, or months of planning and surveilance blocked by red tape. Sometimes the bad guys won or got away, sometimes with the protection of bent but fireproof government officials. With frowns and clenched teeth, they'd hit the pub, drown their disappointment and face another day in the morning, risking life and limb to bring the criminal underworld to justice, often with results that left them gutted and frustrated yet ready to do it again because The Flying Squad was in their blood. Terrific, sombre theme.

Although the intro theme music to The Sweeney is iconic it was (ALWAYS) this melodically beautiful, nostalgia inspiring, thought provoking, memory inducing, gorgeously produced outro music that we know and love by Harry South that touched me in ways the intro didn’t although I loved the intro as well too but it produced a different more “ready for war” emotion… I had previously (NEVER) heard this extended version of the outro music before until 2019 but from the moment I heard it I started to cry and knew why this music deserved my eternal love… It’s just that the relaxing tones of the ending theme relaxed me as a toddler in 1979 (FIVE YEARS) after it was first broadcast on ITV (which was the year I first saw and then watched The Sweeney three years after being born in 1976) whenever I watched an episode and as I continued to do so as a child in 1984 (TEN YEARS) after it was originally broadcast on ITV I happily did so and watched whole episodes from the different series made continuing to be touched by this outro music as each episode finished in ways the intro theme didn’t touch me so… And right now in 2024 (FIFTY YEARS) since the show was originally first broadcast half a century ago on ITV for Thames Television it allows me to reflect on a by gone era allowing my feelings to give birth to emotions buried deep within my soul which includes my inner being excavating from deep within the core of my internal spirit highly emotional emotions which brings me to tears right now as I lie on bed at 11:11pm on Wednesday the 3rd of July 2024 with my eyes filling up with salty water as I type the first thoughts of what to type that come into my head on this particular post on KZbin… As I take my precious time to remember my past world when I witness images through my mind’s eye and as I look at the provided stills on this of John, Dennis and Garfield or Jack, George and Frank showing images of the (CLASSICALLY ICONIC FORD GRANADA) and the (LEGENDARY S-TYPE JAGUAR ICON) with the back drop of London highlighting Big Ben and the Houses Of Parliament I grew up seeing on television as well as in real life as a boy every time I visited the city with the whole of my immediate family that I reflect on which I must admit is on a regular basis which is normal for a super sensitive man like myself because I know that past world in this present moment no longer exists so I have to for my mental state… And in saying so because of that I bring back the memory of my (PRECIOUS PAST) like a long lost family member to keep me company during the day and to lend a shoulder for me to cry on at night… I’ll (NEVER FORGET) being surrounded by my immediate family (most of which are now sadly no longer with us anymore) watching The Sweeney in what is (STILL) the happiest seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years of my entire life… Rest in peace and reside in (POWER) my brothers Mr John Edward Thaw who transitioned in 2002 and Mr Dennis Waterman who elevated twenty years later in 2022… 🕊️

Something I often tell my younger friends about the 70s is that the theme songs to a fair number of series were real toe tappers but the actual programs themselves were quite crap when it came to production values and acting. The Sweeney was an exception plus a few others but alot were a bit dodgy. But as I say.....the theme songs were fantastic.

As a youngster (on those occasions I was allowed to stay up and watch The Sweeney) I always liked this closing theme more than the brassy opener, even though hearing it meant time for bed. The only other programme on the telly I can think of that did this was World In Action - at the time, the opening tune always put me on edge cos I knew the next 45mins or so wasn't going to be good news. But now that I'm a tad older (...) I've understood what a fab bit of prog rock it is. Bring back 70s telly - warts and all. Even if the show is pants at least we can look forward to the theme music.
