I just got this knife...after wanting it for MANY years! Just could not bring myself to pay 400 bucks for one. Happened to stop by a NRS store,this afternoon and the young man working the knife counter told me they had one on clearance. Picked it up for $221!!! So happy to finally own one. It will be the centerpiece of my SAK Collection!

He was mentioning that it's nothing more than a desk piece but I beg to differ. You can most effectively use it I would think by putting it in your backpack or bringing it with you when you go camping or out on hikes. It's a trip-specific tool not intended for convenient EDC but the thing is your EDC isn't ideal for trips and this one isn't ideal for EDC so if you have one of these and an EDC you're set for all possible scenarios. But this one is definitely not just a desk piece.

EDC is obviously subjective to the individual. To each their own. I'd easily EDC the XXL (just get a leather holster and clip it to your belt), but buy one? Nah. Way too much money for me, for tools I already EDC daily. I am getting a Swiss Champ soon and most people on EDC forums scoff at thinking they'd ever carry that daily, but I laugh at them. 😁 The swiss champ is roughly the size of a typical Leatherman pliers. 🤷‍♂️ They're just used to being light on their feet, but I prioritize being 'prepared on my feet', 😉 even if just a bit heavier. So what, just do more squats at the gym. 😉

Legend has it that Andre the giant needed an edc knife that would fit his massive mits. Victorinox quickly designed this knife. Andre took one look, laughed at it, and promptly washed down his lunch with case of beer. Since the design was already made, Victorinox said “fck it” and pushed it to market

😂 they need to create this as a "modular" SAK. it could become three independent knives that interlock as one, but they could be used separately. The pliars section could then hold a nut & the section with a screwdriver could turn a screw or bolt which is impossible when used as a single SAK.🎉

Let’s be practical here, I wouldn’t be using any Swiss Army knife for skinning aside from their fixed blade models. Getting blood up in there is a bad idea imo. It would probably handle it, that said, and whittling for sure. But I imagine it being somewhat awkward or inconvenient using this particular tool for those tasks.

@@TheOpinionarium I can’t blame you. I have several Leatherman multi tools and the grip profile is way better that the XXL but it may be an inherent detail with how much I was introduced to the Swiss Army knife platform at an early age that I prefer them. @@Graves-81_69 and similarly, my first real multitool was a Supertool 300. I’ve loved the Leatherman format ever since, and they do tend to have better pliers which I use often enough. For a while I carried a swisschamp and a Leatherman, but eventually I realized I basically just needed the magnifying glass and better scissors, and I downgraded to an explorer, which also eventually phased out. I just don’t use em enough to keep em on me

@yutehube4468
@yutehube4468 9 ай бұрын
I have got the XLT and that's about my limit (indoors!) for it getting bulky. It's so bulky I'd never take it outside or carry it but indoors the XLT does enough extra stuff the Swiss Champ does, that I think it's worth having the XLT. I do have both but I have never even touched the Swiss Champ since getting the XLT. Both were bought more than 20 years ago and I just love the XLT so much more. Layers? My XLT has 10 layers. The XXL in this video has 15 layers so I'd guess it's 50% wider. That is absolutely ridiculous or "preposterous" as it rightly says in the video title. Yes in any situation, the XXL is preposterous to the point that even if it stayed indoors, it's an impractical tool due to its heft! One could say the same about the XLT "Why not just use a Swiss Champ" but the XLT has the wood saw, it has the hex tools... these are massive advantages over the Swiss Champ - that itself is already a very bulky tool. As far as classic penknives are concerned, you can take the XXL and divide it by 5 so instead of having 15 layers, try 3 layers... that's what a penknife you'd carry outdoors _should_ have. It has to have the large and small blade... it has to have the can opener... but beyond that? Ask yourself what else does it really need? I'd argue the wood saw, but does a thin Victorinox penknife even exist that has the wood saw? It's somehow viewed as a tool only found on these super-wide showcase knives but as an outdoor survival tool that's crazy and I think the wood saw is perhaps one of the most important tools on the knife. This one tool is what I think sets apart the Swiss Champ and the XLT the most.
@TheOpinionarium

If I recall the Camper and the Huntsman both have Saws, I used to carry a Swiss champ and, after that an Explorer. But the thing is that I always have another multitool, being based in the US and further (in Utah, with literally no restrictive knife laws) I can carry any multitool I know of without issues and I do. I Eventually stopped carrying Swiss Army knives in general, not that I don’t love them but in the situations I find myself in, I more regularly need pliers and locking tools. A leatherman is more heavy use, and can take a large amount of abuse that would have the tools on a SAK collapse in moments. But I’ve always been hard on my tools and come what may as long as the job gets done, many don’t share that view. The Swiss Champ XXL is great, I love it as a desk piece. It’s built just like the rest, it could theoretically handle doing everything it has tools for, accounting for lack of space to do so lol. Thanks for the comment! I might have to look into the XLT soon
@yutehube4468
@yutehube4468 9 ай бұрын
@@TheOpinionarium I was wrong about the Swiss Champ, it does have the wood saw on it. It seems the only big benefit to the XLT then, is the hex tools. I just counted the layers on the Swiss Champ: 7. So the XLT having 10 layers means it's not much bigger but it does look it in reality. They are 33mm and 43mm.
@TheOpinionarium
@TheOpinionarium 9 ай бұрын
@@yutehube4468 yeah I recall there being a saw, it’s not something I personally need often so I pay it little attention. I don't like how it has duplicate tools. I want something that has single tools and is practical so no cork screw for me as I don't drink wine. Through 22 countries on 3 continents. LEGITIMATELY used every single feature countless times, from opening cans on Alaskas north slope, to fixing my wife’s eyeglasses in Key West, cutting tent guy rope in Scotland, tightening car battery terminals in St. Petersburg Russia, removing splinters from my kids foot in Croatia. Absolutely indispensable. Left it on my pickup bedrail and drove off from a gun range, (after tightening a loose shotgun forearm). Just bought this version last week, so happy to have it back. I do love me the good ol’ Swiss Champ, I see the XXL as something you own not really to use, but to enjoy. It’s a beautiful, functional paper weight and it’s one of my favorite items just because of how ridiculous it is, but without being poorly built for it. In all honesty, a solid fixed blade, a Leatherman surge, a solid flashlight and a good pocket knife are my go to items. I keep a lot of stuff on me, some things more useful than others. I have a lighter (butane yellow flame zippo) multiple pens, and several other odds and ends that live on me day to day; but the core of it is those mentioned items. I don’t see Swiss Army knives as vital anymore because my biggest general needs are a Really good File, and really solid needle nose pliers. The scissors, awl, and bit driver are all very handy as well, so the surge is really my ideal multitool, but the Arc is nearly equal to it in my eyes, with all my primary required tools onboard and in a lighter, faster parcel.

I don't think anyone imagines that it's functional. It's just for collectors. I don't think the SAK design is ageing poorly at all, they've been in business a century longer than Leatherman and are still the most popular iconic multitool/pocket knife on the planet. Last year Victorinox opened a flagship store on Oxford Street in London UK. There's zero chance of Leatherman doing that. Outside the US Leatherman isn't really well known. Doesn't help that the name is a bit erm ambiguous and anyone seen here with that brand on any promotional gear might get mistaken for a member of the rainbow community lol.
