The name “Torii” is actually a japanified way of pronouncing the word “Torana”…. …which is actually the name of an Ancient Indian gateway from which the Japanese torii gate is derived en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torana

It is "here is a bird" because in order for the "Bird" to land, it needs a "place" to land. In the same way, the mountain is where heaven meets earth. It is where the "spirit"(bird) of God "Lands". If one was to look at both the torii and the mountain together, it is a stacking of that symbolic tool. And when one speaks the words "here is a bird, here is God" they are participating in the ability to receive the gift of life and be a place for the Spirit of God to Focus in a way that we notice, and causes us to participate in that very Creative act. The mountain is you. The Torii is you. It is necessarily the case that these represent gates because looking at it and participating in it's meaning is bringing subconscious attention to conscious attention.

I was reading why its called torii. torii 鳥居. KEY WORD : architecture / shrines Torii are usually erected at all entrances to a Shinto shrine to separate the hallowed precinct from its secular surroundings. They also serve to distinguish Shinto shrines from Buddhist temples.

I find it really intresting that it is pronounced "Torii" because in German we use the word "Tor" for gates or doors and it not only sounds similar to "Torii", but the meaning is also quite similar. (It's also sometimes used in spiritual contexts such as "Tor zum Himmel" = "Gate to heaven" or "Tor zur Hölle" = "Gate to hell")

I am not sure of the existence of the 8 million gods in every part of nature(the Shinto), yet I have been in awed in nature, and those who have believed in the Shinto and been committed in their religious activities. I think torii is one of congregation’s invention to originate in holy places as a gate and a boundary. With regards to aesthetic and arts, simple and minimalist design and colour of torii creates a sacred atmosphere in the landscape. The several hundreds years old trees have been looked after for making torii (buildings) from generation to generation. It shows ancient people’s high sense of beauty, skills with enthusiasm and passion for their religion which is fact regardless of whether foreigners believe in shinto or not. This is just my expression of the religion from a different perspective although I acknowledge that the nature is core rather than objects in the Shinto.

What exactly about the 8 million gods you are unsure about? 8 million usually means a large sum. 8 has been chosen due to the number’s sacredness. Like 108 for the Ancient Indians and the number 9 for the Norse.
