Forgot to add at 14:44 : There would have also been an amazing parallel between this scene and the scene where Mikasa stabbed the kidnapper from behind when she and Eren were kids. Whats even better is that this scene was already referenced earlier in the table scene as well, so the reader could have made that interpretation immediately.

Something which always bothered me with this scene is the initial reaction Armin and Mikasa display towards Eren. He strolls in and starts acting and talking like a villain, and his two best friends, close to him as siblings, which supposedly know him more than anyone else, act scared by Eren's threats. Eren has a cut on his palm and implicitly threatens to shift if they don't "keep their hands on the table". If this scene was consistent with the AoT narrative up to that point, Armin should've looked him in the eyes and said "I don't believe for one single second that you're going to hurt us if we don't 'kEeP oUr hAnDs oN tHe tAbLe'". That's where it would've made sense for Eren to beat the shit out of him, to prove a point. Instead both Armin and Mikasa act like they're being held at gunpoint by strangers, stammering and tearing up when Eren threatens and belittles them. Moreover, they tell Eren that they believe Yelena and Zeke are manipulating him. Now I'm not a psychiatrist or anything, but just imagine going to your friend and telling them "you know, I thought you're being manipulated". If your friend is not being manipulated, they're obviously going to tell you "no I'm not". But if your friend is indeed being manipulated, they're not aware of said manipulation, because if they were, the manipulation wouldn't work. So they would still tell you "no I'm not". What did exactly Armin and Mikasa hoped to accomplish by asking him that? Eren telling them "yes, Zeke is manipulating me, I'm not doing things by my own decisions. Thank you for asking!" ? It's a dumb ass nonsense conversation from start to finish.

Obviously they weren't expecting any confirmation from him. Obviously eren would say "no I am not" They were just simply telling him what they think could be a possibility. Well, if your friend says "no, I am not" you would say "thats what I though you would say". Even if they think that might not be true, they would personally want to belive any possibility that could be a cause to eren's unusual behavior. They would say that because Like, bruh, it's your closest friend that just suddenly acting all villiany, and distancing from you for a while and you have seen him killing all those innocent children and civilians without a sign of remorse and even broke out of the jail with no regards to all the superiors and made a whole team called yeagerists that has been causing chaos in the island, taking everyone as hosts and even killing the court judge with an explosion. And eren himself is looking intimidating. Anyone would be scared if him at that point no matter how close they are to him. That's why it would make sense for mikasa and Armin to act like that in shock. There might be so many questions and emotions flowing through their mind all at once that they don't know how to act because its obvious eren isn't the same person anymore. He was the one who led everyone in the Marley and used them and Sasha died because of him and he is still acting like he doesn't care and just keeps moving to his personal goal See, that's the problem you completely disregarding the context and instead only focusing on the characters rather than only try to look at the situation they are put on

Eren being the one to hit Armin first just ties in so well with Armin's words early on in the series: "You know what I'm saying is right. That's why the only answer you have for me is your fists." I've been so confused by Isayama for not circling back to this line of dialogue and have Armin stay in character. Your rewrite is so much better and just makes more sense to me. I hate how Mikasa just stood there like a wet paper towel while Eren beat up Armin too. Hello? You're an Ackerman worth a 100 soldiers. Do something??
@LeCatization3 жыл бұрын
If anyone wants to justify Armin "acting out of character" because he was emotional, then that just means that Eren trust is misplaced with Armin to broker peace with the world. Imagine Armin just flipping out at an ambassador from another nation because they insult his best friend Eren or Eldians due to the animosity brought about from the rumbling. I never really realized how odd it is that Armin didn't argue with logic but instead resorted to violence so quickly. He's the one that kept on wanting to talk to Eren in this arc and he's been calm under pressure in much more tense scenarios, even in more emotional moments like when Annie/Reiner betrayed them or just after he thought Eren died the first time.
@saintitchief3 жыл бұрын
yup.
@drishyam2723 жыл бұрын
I agree but don't you think Armin is allowed to be emotional here?? like eren is not Annie or Reiner, he is armins childhood friend, the very first one to befriend him. They grew up together, were together even before Mikasa came into their life. I think Armin acting emotional and being a little hypocritical is allowed. Because we humans don't always follow our own rules. It's only our close relations that bring in our worst and best versions I beleive.
@LeCatization3 жыл бұрын
@@drishyam272 Okay, but what purpose does it serve to show Armin resorting to violence so easily in this scene? At best it just paints Eren in a good light, since even Armin can't argue against Eren's logic but instead resorts to petty violence, something Armin has never been shown to do. At worst, it just degrades Armin's character showing that he can't be trusted to be rational when it comes to Eren, which has not been the case previously. In the past Armin has kept his cool while disagreeing with Eren, during the death of his close ones (including Eren the first time) and even facing his own death. There were ways write around this issue while still preserving Armin as a character and having the same key scenes play out. I understand that humans are realistically hypocritical in high stress situations, but I think this scenario is much less serious compared to situations Armin has gone through in the past. Even if this is a "logical" breaking point for Armin, what's the point of showing us this? It has no major relevance to the plot going forward nor do I think that it really humanizes or develops Armin's character. Ultimately, if he can't keep his cool when it comes to Eren, why are we as an audience supposed to think he can be trusted with one of the most daunting tasks in human history, brokering peace, especially when the world directs their hate towards Eren for the rumbling. Negotiations could possibly break down if they insult Eren too much, since there's now a precedent that Armin is much more easily triggered when Eren is involved.
@LeCatization3 жыл бұрын

She would break down as she tells Eren, as it would callback to when Eren broke down. After that then I would have Armin would join the conversation, to back up Gabi and what you said would follow. Eren tells his plans, Armin talks about Eren’s mom, Eren punches Armin and Gabi tries to kill Eren. Eren is saved by Mikasa and the guards show. BUT before Eren leaves after being saved, he tells Mikasa she is a slave and that he hates her. Then she slaps him before he walks out, holds her ground and contest her love. Saying she only wanted to be with him and for all the fighting to stop. She doesn’t care if she a slave because she loves Eren. Eren pauses.. and leaves without a response. How would it be written to better mirror the resolution between Gabi and Sasha’s family?
@ajdoku8653 жыл бұрын
@@lermadaniel that resolution happened organically & has a great message, unlike the one we got. How the entire plotline played out was realistic & was all about adults taking responsibility in stopping hate from spreading to the children, to stop the cycle. The girl Sasha saved let go of her vengeance, maybe she even forgave Gabi, but she didn't become buddy buddy with her. A key factor to making the ending similar to that scene, would be for Margath to survive & fulfil the role of Sasha's dad but for Marley instead of Nicolo. His character arc was centred around seeing the truth of the situation, and if he survived, Yams could've had eren do a small rumbling but get genuinely confronted by Armin & Co. They'd earn the hero status (to us readers) & Margath could vouch for them. Plus, as the highest ranking general, he'd be able to change Marley's policies, like he'd been trying to do. Wars wouldn't be stopped but as long as both Paradis & Marley pay reparations for damages caused by a much smaller rumbling, they could buy more time for a realistic diplomatic resolution (what the survey corps were striving for). So, Eren would've stayed true to himself, Armin & Co would've stepped up, even Historia could've acted like a real head of state. Ymir was waiting for Sasha to leave the forest lool seriously though, she was the character that best embodied connecting with strangers through the simple things we all share.

I think it was obvious from the very beginning that Eren didn't really hate them in that scene, as we would've find out some chapter later, and that he said those words to just push them away. He couldn't have explained his plan to them (whatever that was originally) because he knew they wouldn't understand it and he couldn't trust them, the same way they couldn't understand and accept that side of his personality that had always been latent in him and was now showing itself in full light. I think only Historia knew the whole story, because there was a special complicity between them, but we don't know what they said to each other... About Mikasa, I think she was so shocked by Eren's fake revelation about the Ackermann's blood that she started to doubt herself to the point that it was shattering her, hence her reaction (in the anime this is shown better). Anyway she always had a delusional view about him and about his motivations, we see this on different occasions. She has always been in love with an idealized image of him, along with having a serious emotional dependence problem due to her childhood trauma, and he couldn't understand her feelings, at least until everything was retconned in a cheesy way. I agree completely with everything else you said: Armin is very poorly written in that scene (Bertholdt's influence showing up, perharps? But the topic was never developed further) and your rewriting of it that also gives Gabi a purpose is much, much better.

Not really Mikasa has just not taken the dark side of him Eren has a dark side which he himself loathes and a good side which he uses to wrap scarf around mikasa The good side is protecting others and taking care of them and providing warmth And dark side is when he killed those sex slavers mercilessly saying they deserved it This creates duality to him This is why he was crying like a child in front of Ramzi revealing how he did all he did not to protect eldia specifically but more so because his dream of a free world that he saw in armins book was never there. All he did was to protect his friends and realize his unattainable childish sense of freedom. This is why he had a low sense of self worth and he went to armin and mikasa and told them bad things because he knows that if he is connected to them he won't be able to do one of the most atrocious acts ever done in history of humankind. What makes it interesting is that eren himself has enemy titan within himself and has balls to suggest armin is being controlled by bertolt. He has grishas memories, it means now he loves his own mom and Dina? And then eren says "I am free" even though he is just following a future event he saw through fathers memories. He isn't free, he never was and be never will be with the idea of freedom he has.

This scene is a great example showing how much some characters regressed post-timeskip.

You know how to fix it? Make it so what we see is from armin's POV. After eren manipulated his memories - Eren tells Mikasa that he doesn't give a shit about her familyzoning him and that he already lost virginity AND impregnated the queen no less! - Mikasa tells eren that she was wet af, but after this revelation, she "dried out". - Eren realizing how dumb he was proceeds to erase their memories... only to realize Mikasa is immune. Eren then decides to blow up the world because he turned himself into an incel. - Armin, just like the reader, is oblivious to the fact.

@@itrrii6582 Yeah but he did it to fleshed out the theme "Freedom" more which is ironic since eren & eldians aren't. Isayama can literally avoid this mess in just one chapter. After the rumbling is complete eren can just undo the mind altering then his friends just saw the aftermath, shocked, that all this time its just an illusion and the reality is that Humanity outside the wall.. is Dead. And one last time, the freedom man said to all eldians from paradis. while holding historia's child or baby eren from past: YOU ARE FREE.. the end." The way they handled Ackerman instincts in this scene contradicts earlier scenes where: 1. Mikasa allowed Levi to beat the living crap out of him, only because Armin decided it was the right thing to do; 2. When she just sat and watched how Eren and Jean were beating each other up the night before the mission in Shiganshina; Armin even suggested they should interfere, but she said everything was fine and just sat there, smiling; 3. That scene continuing, Levi kicked Eren's (and Jean's) ass again for taking the party too far and Mikasa once again didn't care to make a move to stop it. I've forgotten a lot of AoT at this point, but judging by what I do remember, your version is true to character(s).

I agree with most of your points but I would challenge you about Mikasa’s reaction. Clearly from the attack on Marley she didn’t believe Eren was capable of involving innocents, she still believes that he is genuinely a good person that protects people who can’t protect themselves. Also her getting emotional and not reacting and challenging Eren could do with her be coming older and her feelings for Eren became more clear to her hence why his words would hurt much more.

why was he angry though? his goal in this conversation as stated in 139 was to push them away. so anything he said or did in this scene was an act in some way. no reason for him to get upset about mikasa saying something when his goal is to make her upset not himself.

im miles behind all of this discussion cause i just finished the series. But I have a question: Later it is revealed that Eren's comment abt the Ackerman bloodline is false right? But didn't we all know that it was bs from the start? I mean, in the first few chapters/episodes Mikasa literally punches Eren after the titans broke the walls. At least that's what I was thinking during this part. Not sure if this holds any relevance to this video but thought i'd throw this out there.
@jjan23832 жыл бұрын
ngl i never questioned him lying in this scene when he said he hated mikasa bc his actions of always being angry towards her and aggressive actually shows that. they rarely have actual happy moments and they’re only friends bc mikasa insisted on following him and eren around. & for the reason being that she’s a slave that’s not a questionable reason either bc he does like freedom and have called ppl cowards like 50 times for not fighting for it. he only embraced ymir so he can get what he wants instead of her following zeke’s plan. but some ppl won’t take that for an answer so i guess i’ll have to somewhat agree that saying the slave part was untrue bc he embraced ymir. but besides that, him hating or disliking mikasa wouldn’t be a shocker to me
@IgboKing3 жыл бұрын

@shwangie Жыл бұрын
My view under the assumption that Eren is complete control of his actions (no 139 'Ymir is in controlling everything to see Mikasa's choice') and the assumption that he was truly trying for an 100% rumbling This scene was Eren expressing his loss of faith in Armin. Now yes Armin acting out and attacking Eren is OOC (pre-time skip), but I like that Eren's called out Armin's change in character BEFORE Armin attacks him. In Eren's own words "You weren't soft like this before. You never backed the enemy. Your judgment led us to an answer... But now, all you can say is , "Let's Talk"... You're absolutely useless." The Bertolt's memory part is a bit iffier, because like you said, in Armin's perspective Eren himself could've been influence by past Attack Titans. But looking at in hindsight we know that Eren would've been influencing himself. But I like to tie it back to the quote from Armin, "You know what I'm saying is right. That's why the only answer you have for me is your fists." Because this implies that when Armin attacks Eren he is acknowledging EVERYTHING that Eren had just said and that Armin himself had truly changed. Mikasa and Eren are showing that they truly don't know each other and have no understanding of each other. Here we see that Mikasa has had the wrong idea about Eren all along and that what she really thinks is Eren is an idealized headcanon version of Eren that she created. She doesn't truly understand Eren or see him for who he is. Eren himself is also showing that he has no understanding of Mikasa. Eren does not tie any of Mikasa's actions to love or familial love. Eren might even be rejecting the idea of Mikasa being in love with him as Zeke suggested. And as such he truly believes that Mikasa is acting out of some sort of Ackerman bond. And in that context perhaps Eren does truly see her in the light that he described. And as such this scene becomes not Eren lying to them to push them away, but to Eren cutting ties with the two of them. They are no longer the most important people in his life. His lack in faith in Armin now brings forth an additional reason for why he would choose an 100% rumbling.

@nuke2625 Жыл бұрын
No totally I disagree, every body is influenced by their previous titan shifters but it's not the same for erens attack titan. Eren is the only attack titan holder that has the founding titan he decides what memories and how much of these memories each holder can get access to(that means it's the opposite, eren has influence over other attack titan shifters. And we have clearly seen that happening. Grisha, Eren Kruger both were influenced by eren. I'm pretty sure attack titan was always hidden from the rest of the 8 titan shifters because eren made that happen. One more crazy theory I've got for you that nobody talks about. Eren Kruger(eren Yeager behind it )is the one who leaked the information about grisha being the restorationists leader(remember zeke hearing that marley got a lead on restorationists that's kruger). Because there was no way he could have passed on the attack titan to grisha in marley even if he did and there's no way he can get a boat ride to paradis somehow. There was no way it was possible. There was only one way, let grisha be taken to paradis and then give it to him there.
