Well, every other Disney parks overseas, not only Tokyo Disney, is significantly lower than in the US. Shanghai Disneyland is owned by Disney is only about $60 for a day pass.

Aiden Kwiecien Also there is likely a premium associated with the US parks (ie Disneyland being the original, the immense size of the property in Orlando) that, to the average consumer, the price hike makes sense. DisneySea may be the best park (because it is!), but the average park-goer may not know that.

7:40 Back in the 1950s, there was the "keeping up with the Jones" mentality of consumerism. You always had to have the same or more than what your neighbours had. These days, there's the "keeping up with social media" mentality, where the sole purpose of buying things and experiences is to post about them online. We as humans constantly need validation for our existence, and that validation frequently comes in the form of our possessions. I have no issue with souvenirs, souvenirs are fun and I love them. But there comes a time when we all have to ask ourselves, "how much is 'enough'?"

Yep, you pay a hefty premium price to enter the park .. and for the majority of the time you are waiting in line to get into an attraction. To top it off you pay very expensive prices for some food to make it all through the day. Maybe look around for something else.

Have you considered looking for discount tickets? Cheaper Disneyland tickets are available at Grocery stores in Southern California, ALSO ask your employer and auto insurance company if they offer discounts for Disney resorts and hotels. --So many do! I never stay overnight on Disney property. I started bringing my own food and beverages with me, only allowing myself to certain treats. I usually don't buy merchandise other than a land or ride themed CD soundtrack which i know won't be found elsewhere. Most Disney clothing and merchandise can be found outside their parks. You'll especially save money right and left operating in this fashion. ALSO, if you're like myself unable to fit into Disney clothing...You're saving TONS OF money

yeah totally agree now it's all about the Disney Stock Market price the price are now insane and you will end up wiaitng forever and not be able to enjoy everything the park has to offer. I think the old model paying for what you use would be cheaper since you have to wait for hours in a giving day for attractions and that's if you focus only on attractions because if you want to see parades etc you will most likely miss show hours etc it's difficult to see almost everything.

Here some Great News... Heard it from me first! After Covid-19 crazy ... There finally getting rid of Annual passholders.. there the reason why parks are so over crowded.. they got rid of the monthly buyers and now who ever played in full .. they will cater to them until there pass expires and that will be the last of them... According to accounting ..they make no profit from annual passholders and they don't spend much.. all they do is causes more lines and they take all the Fastpasses ...

Here in Germany some Parks offer to give people their money back or the can have one free entry every month (like in Phantasialand near Cologne) And probably not that many people have a season pass most of the time that are people that live not that far away (not making much sense for a season pass when you only go 2 or 3 times a year max) The idea behind a season pass is that people come more often and spend what they "save" on tickets and of course that Disney already gets a good amount of money in the bank. You cant tell me that most of the 15+ Million ? have a season pass.

You used ResortTV1 footage, they're amazing! And yes, Disney does an extremely good job with their marketing. The snacks are promoted so much to the point it's not a true Disney experience without them. Another way they make a profit is nostalgia bait. In other words, they release things with defunct attractions. People think they care about them or might bring it back so they buy everything. And that's why Disney does it, because they know people will buy it all. They lure you with nostalgia.

The problem of the people when they get lured into that kind of bullshit and alot of people tend to do that cause of social pressure from Instagram and Facebook. Its all about how people see you. And of course there are the Disney fanatics (like with apple fanboys) they would buy dog poo with attached mickey ears (when i see how many bought that overpriced plastic crap from the new Star Wars Area) Its real Fan Service when they put a little hint from an old ride into a new one like some kind of inside joke.

@@ralelunar’m curious how beneficial that would work out to be mathematically. I did the maths for Sam’s Club/Walmart a while back (since I work for Sam’s Club), and it amounted to a few hundred dollars per employee, per year. Which is nice, but not exactly a life changing amount of money. Basically an extra round of groceries. Yes, that could be extremely helpful for those of us at the lower end of the pay spectrum. On the other hand, once you amortize that out over 52 paychecks it’s like $5 extra dollars per paycheck. Now if you were to reduce the entire corporate structures’ paychecks to $0, then it’s obviously much more. If you adjust their paychecks to what seems reasonable for what they do we end up in a similar situation where yes, those at the bottom do make more, but not that much more; like ~$20 per paycheck. The economics of large businesses is weird and counter intuitive as fuck and no matter which way you slice up the wages somebody’s always going to complain because with millions of employees it all seems like a pittance compared to income and profit. So then we look at slicing up the massive amount of profits to give to employees. Now we have to worry about shareholders and their expected profits on investment. Seems shitty. However, without their investments the business couldn’t afford to grow. Pull their profits they pull their investments which means layoffs and store closures. It all sucks, there’s a reason why economics is call the dismal science. It’s because every time you try to make improvements you realize that there’s just not enough money to spread around equitably and if you print more money the prices of everything goes up due to inflation. Supply and demand is a bitch. Now, to be faaaiiiyyah, Disney is a much different company. And I don’t know their numbers as well as I do the company I work for. Just providing some perspective by giving an example of another massive corporation with a massive amount of employees. I’d imagine if we had access to all the books and where all the money goes with Disney it wouldn’t be as clear cut “just pay everyone more” as we from the outside think it is. I’m fully on board with the sentiment that all their employees do deserve more money for what they do. But having attempted to run my own business and having access to behind the scenes numbers for a massive corporation as well, I know just how much of a knifes edge unilaterally doing that can be.

I took the Magic Key tour at WDW 8 years ago and it was truly magical. A trip through the utilidors, and several other behind the scenes like the Haunted Mansion... Very memorable and a great lunch break in the midday. I think it was $100. Plus park admission.

I wonder this too, and it can't just be "different economy". Also, the American parks at least get new rides with those price increases. In Paris the Disneyland Park didn't have any new addition since 1995 and the Walt Disney Studios not since 2014. The prices are on the up and up, though.

Probably + - Its like with when you hire a professional to do some work for you the hours you pay are most of the time just to keep the company running they make a profit of the materials they sell to you that are needed for that job (atleast thats how it work where iam from dont know how that is in the US)

Part of it is accounting. Debt / capital costs / common areas / executives and management, are often tied to the ticket cost because they benefit the entire park, while with food, merchandise, and "hard ticket" events those common costs are already paid by the park ticket, so it is pure profit. They could have a more even split, but it is hard to say how much of the executive's time or parking lot re-pavement should be charged to each individual food kiosk, so it is easier to assign the costs to the admission ticket. Hope that makes sense.

I do think you’re wrong about the ticket prices margin, I think they raise their ticket prices too much to stay competitive with other parks. To say there is none to very little profit from tickets, I think is wrong, especially since when they raised ticket prices too much a couple of years ago attendance dropped and they list about 10% of there revenue. I agree they make up a huge profit on in park purchases and hotel stays. But they have been over playing their hand on the crazy cost of entry. It’ll be interesting to see how they can respond to Covid-19. I think they are going to have to get very clever to keep the quality up. If they raise prices now they will screw the selves, it’ll be a very interesting couple of months coming up.

I agree. Seems like he's saying the profit margin is small compared to the day to day park operation cost, which isn't false but you can't just compare the cost of tickets to everything else and say profit margins are small, because you're paying employees in all the stores and food places as well as electricity costs to run all that but still comparing it against just ticket margin. The reality is it is all interconnected, tickets, food, merch, hotel stays, parking revenue (if applicable). I can say from my experience of going to Disneyland, ticket price has definitely been the largest expense out of my pocket as I never stay at the Disney hotels (too expensive), and certainly do not eat anywhere close to the same amount in food as I paid for tickets, now my one trip to Disney World, yeah the hotel cost more than the tickets but still food didn't come anywhere close to ticket price there either.

The way any theme park make money is threw mostly food and beverage. From what I have heard a average cup of Coke o cola is $6.99 from the materials used they make around $ 6.50 in profit from 1 drink. Other cheap offering for parks are pop corn, French fries,funnel cakes, alcohol. Also food that’s unquie to that park. Even carts like dippin dots or frozen lemonade. Merch wise is mostly the same things. Ways park make money threw them is stuff with the park name, logo, or company chacter like Mickie, Minnie, Donald Duck, peanuts etc. while parks make some money threw ticket sales the way parks make money is threw season passes along with add on like drink plan, food plan, picture plan. Last thing parks make money on is parking. Parking at most parks go from $15-25. I m not to sure how much parking is at Disney but they make money threw that

Basically they charge a high price for everything to compensate for the high cost. Also I'd like to point out that 300% markup is normal for service food of any type, due to how expensive things like property payments and utilities are, and are not counted towards that markup. However, given that Disney owns the property and the utilities, well you can guess how they make their money back on that markup.

On our last visit to Florida three years ago the weather was crap most of the time and on our last Friday after a washout day it stopped raining about 6pm so we headed over to WDW basically to watch the fireworks, I assumed they would offer a discount seeing we would only be in the park a few hours, but no, full price $133 each, Ker Ching ! Space Mountain was broke as I’m pretty sure it was on our previous visit and everything else was huge queues. Not that Disney was any more a rip off than the other parks, butter beer at $5 for a small plastic cup, yes the parks are fun and unique but very expensive.

You mentioned the Simpson’s being integrated into the Disney parks. They probably will in the some of the overseas parks, but you probably won’t see them in the North America parks due Universal having the theme park license to the first yellow family. Shame, while The Springfield area of Universal Hollywood looks good, the ride itself is quite disappointing. So it may be awhile before we see Skinner’s Steamed Hams on any Disneyland menu.

I totally believe the merchandise is where their money is. Also the food. But, they don't require that no outside food be brought in and you don't HAVE to buy everything you see. So there is the potential to not spend a million dollars, but most people go with a budget for souvenirs or buy the dining plans or the expensive park food out of convenience. Right outside of Disneyland there are plenty of cheap places to eat including a denny's and an iHop right outside the main gates.

Meanwhile, at Disneyland Paris... - Day ticket prices are way higher than that of the competition (and there's a lot of it in Europe). There are also price increases, even when there are no additional rides since 1995 (Space Mountain) in the Disneyland Park and 2014 (Ratatouille) in the Walt Disney Studios park, of which the latter is mostly closed anyway for renovations. - Food? Restaurants are closed, counter service restaurants have a lot of counters closed, and table service restaurants are converted to buffet concepts. Also, what's open closes before diner time and way before the park closes, and you are even diverted out of the parks to the third party restaurants in Disney Village. What's on offer is also not great. Hardly any signature snacks, and seasonal foods are often the same but differently themed, like a donut now has a Spider-Man logo on it instead of Star Wars. DLP has incredible potential and is fun to go to, but if what's said in the video is Disney's financial strategy for their parks, then it definitely isn't being implemented in Europe.

Regarding the bit about the burger- if you do the math, $3us of ingredients to a $12us sale price is a 25% food cost. Most restaurants aim for a 20% food cost. However while this may be an acceptable number, I am sure that their food cost percentage is much lower given the quality of Disney food being mostly lack luster in many outlets. They are marking up their "churros" to a much higher degree however. They use a mass-produced pastry stick product that is roughly $12us for 25 pieces in retail stores such as "Smart and Final". This makes those same "churros" $.48 each, at retail. When bought wholesale, that price drops to possibly $.30 or much less. You pay $7us, it cost them maybe a quarter. Meaning that they make $2.10us PROFIT per churro. I may be wrong, but ding dang do their "churros" make money. (I put churro in quotes simply because the do not sell actual churros, but pastry sticks that they call churros.)

Paradise Pier was such a ripoff. After staying at a resort in Disneyworld, I thought Paradise Pier would be similar but it was just a normal hotel...$300+ for a motel 6 quality room. Plus, it wasn’t even close to the Parks! I’ll never stay at a Disney Hotel in Cali unless I start making a whole lot more money.

despite knowing how much money i'm giving to Disney and completely aware of Marketing tactics, i still spend willingly. park visits, mickey shaped food, merchandise while at park, the flavored popcorn at Tokyo Disney Resort, monthly purchase on Disney Store/Shop Disney, every Disney movie release (multiple times), digital copy of movie, DVD from the vault, Disney+ Subsription, limited edition or monthly subscription merch, Mickey ears, Pins, Legos, Plushies, dolls, headphones, obscure Disney Licensed products, even my Kleenex has Disney on it!

What I am wondering though is, why are tickets sooo expensive and still have a small profitmargin? Like I live in europe and we have many many parks. Some are really awesome and have great themes, some just have great rides but almost no theming. Ticket prices range from 30 - 50 euro. And 50 euro is really the most expensive ticket (there are some exceptions of course). But it doesnt get alot more expensive. When you pay 30 or less euro, food is usually a bit more expensive and the park isnt too big. When paying 50 and sometimes a little more the park usually is huge but food is at a very moderate price. Like a burge menu with a big coke and fries is about 8-11 euro. I mean I was at a park just last week for 5 days and I just bought a season pass for 100 euro and I could eat there everyday without breaking bank, it was actually cheaper than going out eating. I stayed at a hotel for 50 euro a day for two people. I wanted to go to disney world but hell, a 5 day trip with hotel is over 1000$. Like how is that even comparable? And that is not even food included. And then everything else is so crazy expensive. That is just crazy. I almost need a months salary to get to the US and then visit every disney world park once, without park hopping. For the same money I can visit every park in germany twice. If I would do the math I probably could visit all big parks in europe even with travel and food for almost the same amount.

What I don't understand about marking up food/merch prices is that they could sell much more product for cheaper. What's better, selling 1 $30 bedazzled headband, or 4 $12 bedazzled headbands?

Like Dom said in the video, it's about the illusion of luxury. That's the Disney brand of "fantasy," that you're experiencing something exclusive that only Disney could provide. People would begrudgingly buy the $30 headband instead of the $12 headband because they want to feel like a rich person. We're socially conditioned to believe that "lower price = cheap".

Great video as usual. Nevertheless I wanted to provide some feedback. I think your video quality would drastically improve by recording and uploading all videos in 60 fps. I literally get headaches from watching the footage recorded with which feels like 3 fps completely stuttering. Note that this is something even any iPhone nowadays has the capability to do.

Lower ticket prices at Walt Disney World for a day ticket $129 then you got a ride the preferred parking $50 plus what you buy as far as food goes then the merchandise give me a break there's at least 15 ways they can break you in the park

I think it is a brilliant model. It is almost a way of encouraging rich people to support poor people. I am glad that poor boy Billy is going to get to go to Disneyland because Johnny's dad is dropping 1k on lightsabers. And honestly a funny thing is that when items are expensive they become more special. I remember expensive prices when I was a kid and it was fulfilling to select my one little item. Consumables are a little more sad because you feel guilty consuming a $4 chocolate strawberry.
