Genji's mother was not a prostitute. Her father was a counselor of the first rank at the imperial court but died early. It's true that many of the other wives (both the empress and the concubines) were from higher-ranking noble families, but Kiritsubo no Koi (Genji's mother) was of noble birth herself.

Also, Genji became a priest shortly after his true love Murasaki's death, and he died shortly thereafter himself. It's true Genji was a playboy and pursued many women in his life, but he no longer did that after Murasaki's death.
