It's probably because the first time we see him, he is encouraging Utena. But in the REAL flashback, its clear that he is actually mocking Utena in some way, and he's saying that if Utena won't remember it then he has no reason to fear her usurping his ability to become the Prince/break out of his control. Hence why Anthy recalled it first. So, the Dios Utena meets is young!Akio, because he's showing the signs of cynicism and adulthood that would make him what he is to them in the present.

Dios' form here is very interesting. At first he appears in front of Utena as an adult, then he's suddenly a child, then an adult again. I wonder what it's supposed to symbolize? My thought is that the more adult he looks, the closer he is to becoming Akio. After all, adulthood = impurity is a very common theme in Utena, especially concerning characters like Miki and Kozue.

ここ、子供の頃意味がわからなかったけど… ウテナは王子様に救われたから、王子様のように振舞っていたのではなく、少女(アンシー)を助けるために、王子様のようになった。 と分かった時…凄く感動しました。優しいというより、強い子だと感じました。

anthy is so noble she sacrificed herself for her brother! And utena too! the most pure characters of the show. (in comparison to the other charaters at least lol) Dios is such a complex character.

Also, the creator of Evangelion, Hideaki Anno, and Kunihiko Ikuhara are very close friends, and its even been hinted within both fandoms/director's interviews/commentaries that Kaworu was inspired by Ikuhara himself, just as Shinji is a self-insert of Anno. In addition, both Eva and Utena are revolutionary anime franchises that had an impact on their respective genres (NGE/Rebuild for shonen, Utena for shoujo) and are still highly regarded/appreciated to this day. Makes sense to compare them.

@Louchan2 Yeah,I think youre right. Ill just add that the fact that Dios appears as a child and then as an adult is also to symbolize that he didnt had an adolescense,so its like hes just skipping that stage.Hes just stuck there XD Gosh, I love this series so much XD its such a piece of art!

So that’s what Anthy did......she sealed Dios away by sleeping with him. Took away his innocence which killed him. Dios represents the purity of a child. Akio was then born who represents the impurity of adulthood.

Sure. Well, Kaworu was an Angel sent to start the Third Impact and end Humanity...but he ended up befriending Shinji (the reluctant Christ) when he was facing loss/neglect from loved ones. As Angel of Free Will, he had the choice to destroy the world or save it by allowing Shinji to kill him. He did the latter, twice (second indirectly). Kaworu didn't have the will to live and died for our sins but it was Shinji who wanted to save him. It went both ways throughout the Eva continuity.

She represents both Christ and the AntiChrist. And Utena is a Christ figure. Interesting. Same goes with Shinji and Kaworu's dynamic from Evangelion...makes a lot of sense. Oh Ikuhara... :P

Apparently by doing so she took his innocense/purity/light, and that could be the Sword of Dios that exists within her during the series.

@@WolfWoods91 You see I understood the part where she robbed his innocence by sleeping with him. But I never really thought about how that’s how the sword was embedded into her body. Which makes sense because that is where his power is from. Thank you for explaining that.
