Robert Masterman why are you saying Bob?
@DoctorOblivian
@DoctorOblivian 6 жыл бұрын
The Talyllyn Railway is indeed the inspiration for the Skarloey Railway in Thomas The Tank Engine, almost a 1:1 reference. The only thing that Rev. Awdry changed were the names (he used to volunteer on the Talyllyn) This engine's name is NOT Petter Sam, its Edward Thomas, however once and a while they change the name and give it a face (usually horrifying) in tribute to Rev. Awdry and Thomas the Tank engine in general.

@@DoctorOblivian it's not as bad as Nene valley railway. They have the first ever "Thomas" and it has a terrifying face. The problem is, the face was put on the loco by the author of the books, so they can't really remove it.

Wonderful photography. Brings back memories of a school trip ( Chorlton Grammar School, Manchester) to the Tallyllyn railway in about 1953/4. I think that our woodwork teacher -surname Lloyd- was a member of the preservation society which is how we got to go. I have one small B&W photo showing a saddle tank locomotive and carriages with a header board which I cant read. Looks very much like Peter Sam. I now live in Western Australia so no chance of seeing it again in person.

How is Talyllyn pronounced? I always hear it being pronounced as: Ta-lee-lin, Ta-lee-thlin, Ta-lee-chlin and Ta-lee-klin My humble apologies if I offended anyone
@robmasterman

Not at all, split it as follows...Tal as in talcom powder, then y as in er, the final part is the most difficult, put your tongue at the roof of your mouth, and breath out blowing air either side of your tongue, and that will give a very good attempt of Tal Y Llyn, which translates into A high Lake...Hope that helps.

Just so you know, in your description you've put "Towyn" it's actually spelt "Tywyn". Its the weird Welsh language that does that hahah. Before anyone disagrees, that town has been my holiday town since I was born

If it's your "holiday town", try NOT referring to the Welsh language as "weird". That's disrespectful & culturally arrogant.
