Thank you, Keith. Yes, I can see the similarity to that story - it hadn't occurred to me before. I was actually thinking how similar it was to another story I did - "The Cone" by H.G.Wells, who was a friend of Hugh Walpole's. I was wondering whether it was a -direct steal- ...homage 😉

Interestingly, Walpole (who by all accounts was a very nice man-similar to the victim here) was perhaps using his suppressed rage over Somerset Maugham's rather shabby treatment of, and achievements over him back in the day, as inspiration for this story. Maugham WAS the greater writer, but not a pleasant man-so he reverses the roles here to great effect. Perhaps exorcising his literary demon's?
@EnCryptedHorror3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I absolutely agree. The overlap between what happens in the story and what I'd read about the spat between Maugham and Walpole seemed to point to this story being a bit of therapy. I do enjoy a literary spat They are by far the best kind! Elinor Mordaunt (I recorded her story "Luz") also got involved, wading in on Walpole's side.
@bloodgrss2 жыл бұрын
@@2msvalkyrie529 Yes, you are correct. In the end, some of the best of him still survives. Not sure, in this ever-increasing visual world, much of the rest of him will. But it is certainly rewarding if found.
@bloodgrss2 жыл бұрын
@@2msvalkyrie529 The sad fact is, Hugh was really a gentle soul, and so helpful to other writers. It was Maugham that could be a jealous and bitter man, though he was undoubtedly the 'greater' writer. Don't think their sexual persuasions had anything to do with it, and if it was, it was all on Maugham's side; Walpole was happy with his ex-Policeman for many years before he died.

Sooo much envy, jealousy, hatred, & self-righteous judgement; rather turned me off, but you did a lovely job making the narration nasty!
@EnCryptedHorror3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. Having read up on Walpole I think he might have been exorcising some demons with this story - either settling a score of his own or warning himself against such bitterness. He enjoyed commercial success but was slighted by his literary peers (Somerset Maugham, disappointingly, seems to have been quite unfair.)
