Certain keyboards do worse because of "chord splitting". Where despite the advertised polling rate of the keyboard being technically correct, its only true for 1 key at a time. Pressing multiple simultaneously will poll at a significantly lower rate, normally at 125hz or even less, leaving 8ms or more btween each key press even if timed perfectly IRL. Worst part is that no keyboard listing even aknowedges this issue.

@algotkristoffersson15 Жыл бұрын
Why is there ANY time between them in the first place, just send both at the same time.
Жыл бұрын
@@algotkristoffersson15 Keyboards are a little more complicated than people might expect. The "brain" of a keyboard almost never has enough individual input pins to read each key separately, so instead, they have to use a design called a key matrix in order to identify which keys are being pressed. The matrix is basically a grid, where you scan each row & column one at a time to identify the keys that are pressed. So you already can't instantly send the first key the moment it's pressed - it has to wait for the matrix scan to reach it first. If you are pressing a key in the first row & column, and the scan is currently in the middle row & column, it'll take some time before the scanning finishes all the rows & columns and wraps back around to the start and sees the key you're pressing. Just designing a keeb to send keypresses essentially instantly is not trivial.

I believe the Bioshock infinite speedrun did something kind of similar. There was an item you pretty much needed for the late part of the run, but there was only a small chance a merchant would carry the item. Since you get to the merchant so late in the run, it would be very frustrating to not get the item time after time. In the end they ended up allowing a mod that made sure the merchant always had the item to keep people from abandoning the game

Crouch Jumping and the Source engine, name a more iconic duo
@xleep7122 жыл бұрын
I used to play a ton of Minecraft parkour, and that community has the exact same issue! Minecraft runs at 20 tps, and the single most important timing in the game is hitting sprint and jump exactly one tick apart. This is mostly consistent (top players consistently hit within a 45ms-55ms window), however there's always that same element of RNG, and missing one jump can sometimes make you lose literal months of progress. Really neat to see how the same issues affects so many other gaming communities.
@thewhitefalcon853917 күн бұрын
How can you lose months of progress instead of just the one run?
@xleep71217 күн бұрын
Many Minecraft parkour levels use what's called "rankup" style, where the difficulty comes from getting to the end regardless of time to complete. The hallmark of the style is that if you fail a jump, you fall down to whatever is below you. So in one level I beat, the second-last section will drop you to the second floor of the sixteenth building if you fail, and the next section will drop you to the first floor of the first building if you fail. It took me about three weeks to get those sixteen buildings in, so if I had failed a jump I would have lost those three weeks of progress.
@thewhitefalcon853917 күн бұрын

hello here is an addendum of stuff i would like to add: I seek forgiveness from all people who actually know math (i am not very smart) Q: can u do in apex? A: From what I've tested, it doesn't seem to be the case even though Apex has the same 70 units of wallrun_fallAwaySpeed. Wallbounces always gave me the same ~260 units of speed whether or not i was crouching and jumping off on the same frame. Given how simple of an input it is and how much speed a crouched Wallbounce would give you (330 units) I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the devs just straight up patched it as they were working on wall interactions Q: what about something like `bind x "+jump; +duck"`? A: This effectively acts the same as a software macro, just without having to use external programs. To my knowledge, double bindings of gameplay actions like these that you have to either set up through the developer console or a custom .cfg file are also not allowed in other source games out of principle of it basically being a macro
@DeadlyPear2 жыл бұрын
In the source game you showed in the video (half life), you have to use the console/config to bind a key to lower the fps. Also the same for having scroll wheel being bound to jump for easier bunny hopping in runs. Generally for source games literally anything that's not sv_cheats is okay.
@zweekSR2 жыл бұрын
@@DeadlyPear It's not so much about binding stuff through a config, but specifically the double binding of one key that's not allowed afaik (this also doesn't apply to everything but I remember being told that it was gameplay actions couldn't be double bound, so stuff like fps binds would be okay to double bind since those aren't considered gameplay actions like moving and jumping)

Is there basically no non-abusive/cheater-y way to apply what the CKF does to vanilla/Northstar multiplayer on PC? I’m not in the running community, but I’m obsessed with learning how to move faster in multiplayer, and I’ve been noticing how incredibly difficult it is to consistently nail crouch kicks even when slapping both V and spacebar at what appears to be the same time (I also swap out my V keycap with a taller keycap when I play to match the slope of the spacebar). Good to know the reasoning behind why this tech is so hard to pull off consistently… beyond me just not being very good at it! Thank you for another incredible video, @zweek. I squealed this morning when I saw that you’d put up a new video. I’ve been working hard at crouch kicks for the last few months and your new content about it has scratched a deep itch and my brain is now feeling warm and fuzzy. Praise be! 🙌

I just commented but tried out the bind v “+jump;+duck” thing in the developer console in a private match on Northstar. I know next to nothing about the console and how it works, but the command did have an effect: It does indeed make me jump and crouch at the same time, but my crouch is stuck in the, uh, on position, and won’t turn “off” until I mess with the in-menu binding settings again. Anybody know what’s going on there and how I could phrase the command to ensure that crouch is not toggled on (permanently) when I press the V key?

Just watched the other video I mentioned. Also great. Made me think of two or three things: 1- the buffer window you mention on this video sounds exactly like the way DOTA 2 implements cancellation of skill casts - a double press. Taking methods from other games is nice, and this is in no way a dig at the big brains in TF2 community; What I mean to say is, like the UCF and double presses, maybe the analog to digital stuff has an equivalent in some other game (aside from the obvious simile of box controllers in smash) that can be used to learn from - which also leads to my second point: 2- I honestly think (being an old bloke) that the best thing the community can do right now is have another vote on the legality of those external tools that emulate analog commands on the keyboard - even if it is now unnecessary and a moot point and basically universally agreed that it shouldn't be allowed. Another vote, even with the same result, establishes the nice precedent that when situations change, the self governing community can change its mind if I wants to. 3- Taking stuff from other games - pressing both directions has it's uses, I've seen in this video in some player's overlay they were using "E" to jump, you mention that the TAS has uses for spamming "S" to stop mid-air. I think a small next step for the community or players interested in it is adopting a keyboard layout similar to "The Core" (created and intended for Starcraft), in which you shift the keyboard position to the left and rest your thumb in the right ctrl and shift buttons, your pinky on "J" and so on, with the other fingers adopting similar comfortable positions. Many a year ago I used to play Quake 3 with 'bar controls' (where instead of WASD you use SDFG and therefor don't have to move any finger to press backwards right after forwards) and it was ok, nowadays I play shooters moving with "JOP' " (yes, the ' key like by the enter-key, shared with @ in my GB ISO kayboard) and it has it's benefits for counter-strafing in CS:GO and I am sure I've seen some people use similar things for tech in Apex and for building in fortnite). I personally jump with the right mouse key (back from when timing rocket jumps were easier that way, since you jump and shoot with the same hand and same switch type [travel distance, actuation force etc]) but of course you can bind whatever wherever. Honestly, I think there might be some uses to having more keys available with less distance to travel for keyboard players. So maybe some more adventurous player might want to check it out? If this comment isn't seen I might drop by the Discord server and start up a convo.

As evidenced by the people praising you in your comments section, you’re doing great work here. I watch most major “speedrun explanation” channels and this is on par or better with much of their work. Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll go far!
