Songwriters: Rodgers, Robert; Robinson, William; You've got a smile so bright You know you could have been a candle I'm holding you so tight You know you could have been a handle The way you swept me off my feet You know you could have been a broom The way you smelled so sweet You know you could have been some perfume Well, you could have been anything that you wanted to And I can tell the way you do the things you do Ah baby (The way you do the things you do) As pretty as you are You know you could have been a flower If good looks was a minute You know that you could be an hour The way you stole my heart You know you could have been a cool crook And baby, you're so smart You know you could have been a schoolbook Well, you could have been anything that you wanted to And I can tell the way you do the things you do Ah, baby Yeah You made my life so rich You know you could have been some money And baby, you're so sweet You know you could have been some honey Well, you could have been anything that you wanted to And I can tell the way you do the things you do You really swept me off my feet You made my life complete You made my life so bright You make me feel all right

One of the most memorable lyrics in music history, “The Way You Do The Things You do” (1964) is a great piece of romantic poetry. It might not be Shakespearien, but it is very effective. From the first lines, one sees the singer is on to something : “You got a smile so bright You know you could have been a candle.” Smokey Robinson, who was the primary songwriter for the quintet, penned this. It was the band’s first hit after a long string of flops. The tune established a template for more winners by the performers. A dancer named Cholly Atkins was brought in to do choreography for them, which befitted the number, where they literally mimed the lyrics. Otis Williams, founder of the ensemble, recalled : “The first time we heard the song, we loved it. The melody swung, and the lyrics had lots of charm. They were silly in a way, talking about a girl you loved as a candle, a handle, a schoolbook, a cool crook, a broom, a perfume, but, TYPICAL SMOKEY, he made it work.” Mr Robinson claimed that Curtis Mayfield was his inspiration for “The Way You Do The Things You Do” : “He had a song out with The Impressions titled ‘It’s Alright’ and they sang with this great harmony and I knew The Temptations […] had a great harmony sound, and Curtis had this high voice like Eddie Kendricks, and I wanted to simulate that.” The oeuvre has been an American chart-topper (Too 40) in four successive decades, from the 1960’s to the 1990s. A version by Hall & Oates featuring Temptation chanters Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 1986❕ Stevie Wonder performed the soul classic at the 2023 Grammy Awards as part of a tribute to blue eyes William “Smokey” Robinson and Berry Gordy Jr., both MOTOWN PIONEERS‼️ 💚🎼💙
