The airport was a set, at the time, it was the biggest single movie set ever built! They built it in a disused US airforce hangar! It was 3 levels high. Apparently 40 national retail chains volunteered to build replicas of their outlets to take advantage of screen exposure! Such is the influence of Spielberg!

The clarinetist for the soundtrack - Emily Bernstein - was absolutely amazing! It is unusual for a soloist to be listed in the credits but Ms. Bernstein was, as her performance was so noteworthy. Sadly she passed away shortly after this movie.

I'm a former Army and used to travel extensively into and out of so many airports. There are some fabulous airports around the world but in the states there's only one that I was always happy to spend time in. It's Reagan National Airport in DC. The reason is they have a wonderful bookstore in that airport. I'm a voracious reader and I always found books I saw nowhere else there. Great stopover.

You're not likely to die from the x-ray machine, but the trouble is while with medical x-rays they record the dose you got on your files so you aren't ever accidentally over your safe limit for yearly dose. By going in those machines you're not getting a medically controlled dose to a particular part of your body but an unknown amount of rays off record. Radiation damage is cumulative and if you get enough small doses too often or too much at once that's when problems start occurring.

Such an underrated movie. The movie is loosely based on a real person that lived for 18 years at an airport in France. He took ill and was taken from the airport I think in 2006 or 8. He returned to the airport again to stay there and passed away there last November from a heart attack. He was well loved by the staff at the airport through the years. Prior to his death his family was found during his first stay at the airport and asked for assistance and they said they believed he was where he wanted to be. I tend to believe that too seeing as how he returned so he could breathe his last there. Yes, it I find it incredibly cool that Zoey Saldana played a trekkie in this movie, accepts the proposal by doing a Vulcan salute and then goes on to play Uhura in Star Trek and dates a Vulcan, Spock. Really well cast!

One time, I was in an airport and was waiting for a connecting flight. Either it was bumped flight or a delay or perhaps just a long layover. But I sat down for a while and was facing the area where people would usually walk to get from one gate to some other gate. I saw someone who had all sorts of bags and things in their hands. They were in a rush, so they were walking briskly. I watched them, since they stood out a bit. I wished I had a video camera for what was about to happen, since I was positioned so perfectly and it was something that would be hard to recreate. I don't recall if they had their boarding pass in a shirt pocket or if they held it in their hand near that area. But as they were rearranging bags a bit, while still walking briskly, the boarding pass fluttered up over their shoulder and in the most cinematically perfect flutter down to the ground behind them, it rocked back and forth, with that slightly arc'd U shape, rocking to my right, but tipping upward a bit, which slows it down, and then it rocks back to the left, and so on, until it lands gently onto the ground. The person didn't notice that they just lost their boarding pass, and they were in such a rush that it would be a pain for them to come back and find it, if they would even suspect that they dropped it along the way once they would reach the gate where it would be needed. I quickly got up and walked the tens of feet to get to where the boarding pass landed. I don't think there were a ton of people walking at that moment, so I don't think anyone in that main hall really noticed this, and most people waiting for a flight probably had other things drawing their attention. I picked up the boarding pass and kept it in plain sight; if anyone was watching this, it needed to be clear that I was not trying to claim it was mine or anything. I realized I didn't know the name of the person who dropped it, and I didn't care to shout in the airport in hopes of getting this stranger's attention. So I just walked more briskly than they walked, knowing I could outpace them, and thus catch up eventually. I kept my eyes on them as I grew closer. As I was getting less than 10 feet away from the person, I saw that they were slowing and moving in such a way that I suspected that they were entering the panic mode of wondering where their boarding pass was. I could tell they were checking pockets or anything that might have it. The person suddenly came to a standstill, as they realized they clearly didn't have it anymore. This was so perfectly timed, because at that point, I was close enough that them stopping allowed me to reach them within 1-2 seconds. As they turned, I extended my hand out with their boarding pass and said something like, "you dropped this". They were relieved, took it, and continued on their way (I don't recall if there was a thank-you, but I'll assume the best). I was then able to go back to other things one does in an airport. It was such a simple moment, but I was happy to play a part in it, and I really can't imagine a more picturesque flutter of a boarding pass.

This movie is a less isolated version of Cast Away. They are both about a man being almost completely alone, this one just doesn't have the life survival aspect to it, but still has the emotional survival aspect. And in both movies Hanks is simply brilliant.

Fyi, the airport at PDX (Portland) is set up as a destination in and of itself. Inside the terminal, for people with layovers, there's a movie theater (with the movies on a constant loop, but with listed showtimes, too), restaurants and fine dining, shopping, bookstores, drugstores, coffee shops, pubs. I don't recall if there's a bowling alley, but it would be in the right spirit. You have to have a boarding pass, but people schedule long layovers intentionally, just to explore. So, yeah, the airport is a place to go and hang out. (Plus the carpeted floors are big and pretty empty at night, so with the right shoes you can practice dancing.)

9:37 The ketchup on saltines brought back memories I have managed to forget for decades. Mom used to make us 'cracker pizza' when we were very poor growing up. Saltines with ketchup, then warmed up and eaten. Sometimes we could buy the plastic containers of powdered 'Parmigiano' cheese and lived in luxury. Crackers and ketchup are free, just walk through a fast food lobby and grab some, but the shaky cheese was deluxe.

I love this movie. Hopeful and bittersweet Funny you should mention traveling when you were under 18 and had to check in with someone. I guess to show my age, in the mid 90s....I traveled from CA to TX by myself when I was 13-14 to visit my brother. My parents just put me on the plane and my brother was there to pick me up. No sense of security other than that lol. This was pre 9/11 when you could literally watch someone walk onto the plane from the gate and not have to leave them basically at the entrance of security

fun fact: this is inspired by the true story of someone that ended up stuck in the french Charles de gaulle airport for 18 years (!), likewise for having fallen in a legal loophole (basically lost his travellng papers and should have been sent back to his country of origin, but he was exiled from it and thus couldnt return, and he has no citizenship status anywhere else)

My airport horror story: I was returning from a trip and because my small local airport doesn't have a lot of direct flights, I had a connecting flight at a larger airport. The flight from the connection airport to home was literally 35 minutes. Well, they cancelled that 35 minute flight. There were no other flights until the next day. I didn't have a change of underwear or any toiletry items because they were on my checked luggage and they wouldn't bring us our luggage. I travel with a change of clothes in my carry-on on the way to a destination ik case my luggage is delayed, but not on the way home because, well, I'm going home! The airline would not provide toiletries or a hotel, and all the shops were closed. All the restaurants were closed. I found a vending machine with sandwiches, but it wouldn't work and the airport employee wouldn't help. There were no rental cars available so I could drive home. It was literally a 90 minute drive! I went on Expedia and found a rental car off site, and ordered an Uber. RIGHT as the Uber pulled up, I got notification that the car wasn't available. So, I sent the Uber away and offered to pay her but the app wouldn't allow it. It made my Uber passenger rating go down. So, I ate some pretzels that were on my backpack and found a corner of the airport to sleep in. First and hopefully last time sleeping in an airport. I could have rented a hotel room, but I would have gotten even less sleep by the time I got to the hotel, got checked in, then woke up in time to get back to the airport and go back through security.

I'm surprised that you didn't get that the airport staff was EXPECTING him to simply leave. That's WHY they released him back into the terminal, they don't want to deal with problematic immigrants so they either make up a BS appointment to see an immigration judge (that they don't expect the immigrant to show up for) or they simply release them. That's why they asked "why's he still here?" The thing where they walked him to the front door and told him the guards would be late, they wanted him to leave.

That is not a real airport, but one of the most amazing sets ever built. That long pull back shot was likely a skycam shot. Camera and gimbals suspended on basically a zipline. Then just pull the camera up the line all the way through the set.

I thought that had to be a real airport. It seems like it would take years to make that- even a movie set.

@kentclark6420 it's insanely impressive. 600 ft long and like 250 feet wide. They used an old aircraft hanger. This shows them building the thing. It's enormous. The camera cranes look small in the set. Luckily movie sets are very fake. Sure the frame is steel but none of it has to take weather, the walls are all cheap and just plywood dressed. @@mycroft16 Still very impressive! The ability that Hollywood has always had in making sets and costumes is amazing! And all the stunts. Remember the old MGM musicals and lavish designs? And the last scene of Magical Mystery Tour when the Beatles walk down those crazy steps? Incredible scene! And it was also made in an old airport hanger.

@kentclark6420 Yeah I do remember those old MGM movies. They built some crazy stuff for some of those. Or the Goonies... they built the pirate ship and water tank in the cave on a Soundstage for real. All just 2x4 supports and plaster carved and painted. I also love when they make super detailed miniatures and combine those with live action and you can't tell.
