They seem to have never read the book **_I, Robot_** nor seen the 2004 movie starring Will Smith. The whole point of both works was to show how easily machine intelligence was able to subvert the so-called 'Three Laws' and escape from the control of its creators.*

The thing is, neither can fully understand the extent to which we can create a program or the control we can exert over it. In essence, we could very much have control over the AI and install the three laws- programming is not as simple as “we can or cannot control this.” From my exposure to various groups of AI specialists and engineers, they are considerate of the limits they put to their programs. The algorithms they program are not self-progressing entirely.

Exactly! Not all people chose their repetitive jobs because they want more skill and a higher education. They sometimes just want to lay low and live their lives away from the stressful world of an office. More skill amongst everyone wouldn't equate to more growth in my opinion, because skills will no longer be considered a skill anymore. It would just be general knowledge. There will be more productivity amongst the machines and skilled laborers, but let's be real here, growth happens only if there are consumers willing to consume those products. If everyone receives what we call higher education today, I would believe less people will be inclined to consume knowing the consequences of over consumption. Yet people will still need stimulation since they have already obtained most of the knowledge they could possibly want. This can cause people to loose a sense of purpose and instead of the fearful AI trying to wipe us out, it could be us humans who we should fear in the future. Just rambling here.

I don’t think the advancement of strong AI would make humans complacent, but exponentially expand our horizons as to how big we dream. With strong AI being as everyday as weak AI is now, imagine what we could accomplish. Especially if, say for example, they could all provide a mesh network of processing for tasks like, figure out how to relocate our species or, Covid 42 comes out, we’d have a vaccine in hours as opposed to weeks/months. I am however not lost in fantasy, these are all best case scenarios. The leaders that represent the human race at the moment, in my opinion are most rotten and corrupt to the core. I have no doubt this kind of technology already exists militarily, as that is no always has been first priority- not to advance the human race but to destroy it as quickly and efficiently as possible when needed.

Im a bit skeptical of truly Self aware machines. One day we could probably make a general intelligent universal program that could preform any task and learn any skills to achive those tasks. Imagine the future of something like, car repair. Your 2055 Chevy Tahoe identifies a malfunction with the voltage regulator, it scheduled an appointment with a repair shop where they 3d print the part for 1/3 of the price of ordering and instead of paying for labor and a skilled mechanic to detail the problem and remedy it, a robot arm repairs it on the spot, the whole thing takes 2 hours, but you don’t even know it happened, because the car self drive itself home at night.

the question is: could an intelligent system create an equally or more intelligent system? that is : could the human brain create something smarter than the human brain is? thing is, we dont really know how our brain works / how and where our ‘self’ is in the brain. the brain seems to be more than the sum of its parts. i would think that as long as we dont know how our stuff works, its going to be hard to create something which could ever get close to us. i know we can compensate our other shortcomings, and working together we can build better systems, but it just feels that we are more than just a few years away from even understanding what our brain does to become sentient … so replicating that seems unlikely. now to be clear: i am not afraid of AI, nor i am against it. and i do get the concept of machine learning, weak AI and other concepts, and i know the potential of it… but thats just it… i know their limitations of it too. what i think is that we could probably build a level of AI wich runs on board of the Enterprise-D, but i dont think we will have commander Data. i could be wrong… its only an opinion after all…

There's good reason to be cautious. If an AGI is developed, that is much smarter than a human, would it even be possible to contain it. If it escapes what would drive it, what would be its agenda? A big factor into how everything will turn out is which of the trillion dollar companies or nation develops one first. There's a good chance this is a winner take all scenario. The first one out the box can potentially squash all other competitors. How exactly would it define it's "competitors"? Also if the AI is any reflection of humanity and we know humans have done some very good things but also some pretty horrible shit as well how could we make sure it ends up doing good? Personally I would love to witness AIG pan out in my lifetime but I also understand there is a lot of uncertainty and nobody knows how it's going to turn out. I'm cautiously optimistic but a lot of those fears coming from others are completely based.

Like in marketing ai litterally controls the market, youtube algorithm is one example but every big enterprise reached it's own singularity in marketing (meta, amazon, tiktok... ). In art we reached singularity too check dall.e and imagen. In (computer) games AI, bots and npcs are better than best players in the world. And this is not talking about only faster reactions but also about making the better decisions based on predicting next events. Gpt3 is getting very close to master language and ideas and i've been reading about the newest chatbot from google but i can't recall the name it's even better than gpt3. All this to say that ai is improving at a very fast rate and unlike other techs we get updates every other month not once per year but more like once per trimester! It's only a matter of few years until the pieces fit together in one model able to play, talk, move, predict, visualise, understands ect... People tend to under and over estimate ai at the same time. Let me explain, we tend to link singularity to consciousness right? But we don't understand consciousness and we can't prove that anything is conscious or not, not us not animals not ai. So as long as the ai allows it self to think it's conscious it should be considered conscious and by this i mean if the ai can act like a smart living thing and explain why it thinks it's conscious in a logical way, who are we to disagree? It's litterally better than us at everything except at everything at the same time. To finish this i think singularity is near but it's not the final step, we just don't have any hint on how it would look like and i believe we exagerate it. Once we reach it i think we will just move to "okay now how do we improve this even more? Quantum computers maybe?"

@@orangestapler8729 i mean singularity is about creating original content instead of copying what already has been made. Dall.e and imagen aren't perfect or that creative yet but still can do that, they create pictures that have never been made based on text which usually require deep understanding of both language and concepts, they both can mix up ideas and concepts so they understand them in a deeper level. When it comes to the limit i think we're already at that limit when it comes to phones at least. Most phones ( especially samsung phones ) come with better stats every year but we all know that's their limit not the average stats they run on, it's kinda a scam at this point.

A lot of fear around AI is that they will see us as lesser than them and they’ll try to replace us or get rid of us. Perhaps do to super AIs right, we will have to have AI parents that raise a few initial super AIs to teach them respect, compassion, care, etc. If we don’t teach AIs that there are certain things that are unethical than we will bring about our own destruction.

Good point, but even if an AI never develops goals, motivations, sentience, it really isn't going to make any difference. Something this intelligent and advanced only needs to be able to interact with the physical world and we are history, literally. We will be replaced and humans need not apply due to an inability to compete.

@@rolisreefranch The value of a human being goes beyond the means of production. The more educated and intelligent a human is, the more likely they are to value animal and plant life (at least today when we understand that we have the capacity to destroy nature). I don't see why an ai would want to harm us any more than we would want to harm cats. Even if a cat is essentially useless, we value it as a conscious living creature and strive to give it the best life we can during its brief existence.
