The Texas Bucket List - Odessa Meteor Crater

We head West to visit a sunken site formed by a space rock thousands of years ago!

I’m originally from Lubbock, back in the 50’s. In the summers, I’d ride with my Dad on his milk route that delivered to Odessa and the surrounding small towns. This would have been on my “wanna see that Dad” list. We were always looking for something interesting along the way...glad I found this, wish I’d explored it back then... who knows, might a found us a meteorite! I can relate to the Stetson Texas man... I grew up 5 miles from this crater. Pretty hard to believe multiple meteor fragments penetrated through 500-700 feet of sea water and made numerous craters on the Permian Sea bed. Can you imagine the tsunamis? It seems more likely that the sea was already dried up when these meteors hit...or the sea hadn't been formed yet...or the sea was much shallower.

Geologist just found a mile wide crater in Louisiana. I wonder if all of the big craters are from one big volley of meteors.

My uncle Bobby made this hole, right outside of Odessa Texas. As the story goes, Bobby and me was driving through some property, that Orville Redenbauker had bought back in the 50s. Bobby was telling me how it was going to be a popcorn farm, but it never panned out, since there wasn’t enough water, and how the bank wouldn’t give him a loan to drill for a well. Suddenly! Bobby yells for me to pull over, and starts telling me how ole Orville hadn't trusted banks none, and had hidden all his money that he made with that microwave popcorn invention, in a hole in the ground, out here in Texas. Well sure enough, there was this hole in the ground right off the side of the road where Bobby said to pull over. Bobby jumped out of the truck, and crawled down it that hole, and no sooner did he get in it he came backin out cursing and yellin, covered in dookie and corn kernels. Reckon we had ended up finding one of Orvilles abandon septic tanks, and Bobby was covered in Orvilles gold. However, Bobby wasn't convinced that this was just a poop hole, and spent the next 30 years digging for that money that he thought was in that hole, I think he's still looking for it.

I am the proud owner of an Odessa meteorite. It's a beautiful specimen, weighing 583.5 grams. One of my most treasured possessions! I hope to visit Texas one day, to see the crater :)
