In the Twilight of the Idols chapter called "What the Germans Lack" Nietzsche said "power makes stupid." Ignoring the obvious and conforming to the herd, we are too scared to say "but look, the Emporer is naked!" It takes the innocence of the child to tell truth to power. Yet Kant taught us that freedom takes autonomy -- remeber Brian at his window in the Monty Python movie, pleading with the crowd "you are all individuals, think for yourself" and they all answer with one voice "yes we are all individuals and think for ourselves" and Brian gnashes his teeth at the irony. Autonomy takes maturity; courage takes innocence. Therein lies the tough challenge of faith: critical but not cynical, innocent but not immature, clever but not conceited. Every day we have to pick up our own pole yet again, and try to walk the tightrope of life, hoping not to lose balance, but hoping too that if we do, others have stretched a net of love to break our fall. Bonhoffer; Nietzsche; Kant: these are the names of some of my favorite nets.

I think in this context innocence is lacking in knowledge and experience and so courage from this kind of innocence can be brittle or fleeting. True courage, mature and durable courage is in knowing there could be serious consequences from calling out bad decisions or questioning the people in charge but doing it anyway. Its awful to see innocence ask the good question and get reprimanded for it.

@MindMoneyFusion18 сағат бұрын
Absolutely, that’s a key challenge! Many people feel they’re thinking critically, but in reality, they might just be reinforcing their existing beliefs or conforming to a different narrative. Bonhoeffer’s point about the subconscious nature of this phenomenon highlights how deeply it can affect us without our awareness. Encouraging genuine self-reflection and openness to alternative viewpoints is crucial-perhaps it’s the first step toward breaking this cycle.

You can’t change everyone’s mind without inherited money and without a particular last name at birth. If you owned a mass media outlet, you could sway the thoughts of many. What you can do…: is fix your local environment, living conditions and your relationships with those you love. The masses don’t matter and never will, be something for those who you are able to be something for. Fame is a curse, change for others must occur from within themselves (they must choose it by free will). So be what you can be and forget the rest

Hi there, Totally agree but there is just a little cavity in the solution as the recent past and the present show! Namely, "Critical thinking" and "Independent thinking" are most of the time wrongly interpreted in execution! They become there own fallacies! I call it "compensation bias!" Compensation bias comes to play when you are conscious of a bias you have or want to avoid getting caught in one and then overcompensate to the other side which result in a opposite bias! A very well example is how conspiracy theorists reason! Their standard approach is "Take what the government says or other "mainstream authorities" like the news, or constitutional entities, and then take that as a confirmed lie! From there they say they do "their own research and think critical!" But this "own research" and "critical thinking" consists very much always of checking with their fellow conspirators, their bubble on social media and just bluntly taken that what is said and assume the opposite of that must be the truth! So in other words, They conform themselves even more to lies and fear! And when clearly getting prove by witnessing their mistake or wrongful assumption, cognitive dissonance sets in! The only people who are able to think critical in a healthy balanced way are those who already have the mental capacity to do so! Who has the right character traits and are mentally able to acknowledge and admit mistakes or wrong believes! Everybody else will only get sucked into their own bubble until the evidence is so extreme, the consequences so shocking, that they can no longer deny the truth! Or an authoritative figure admit to it first, before they will conform! And then, most of them pretend they always have believed, or where convinced, their new born believe was the truth all along and say they never believed that what they believed until then! (sounds a bit confusing, but I hope you get the point)
@MindMoneyFusion18 сағат бұрын
Thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed comment! You bring up a crucial point about the pitfalls of overcompensation and how ‘critical thinking’ can sometimes be misinterpreted or misapplied. Your concept of ‘compensation bias’ is fascinating-it really highlights how the intent to avoid bias can inadvertently lead to new forms of bias. The example of conspiracy theorists is particularly striking. It’s true that rejecting mainstream narratives without true critical analysis often creates its own echo chamber of misinformation and fear. As you mentioned, balanced critical thinking requires the capacity to question not only external sources but also one’s own beliefs and assumptions-a skill that isn’t easy to cultivate.

Reading the comments, there is also is other thing. I don't know whether you could call it a fallacy. I think some kind of bias. Maybe it is because I am on the spectrum, but I really can not think like that. Too illogical, but yet, most people have this next mindset; First bias; Everybody is unique. Second bias; Everybody is the same. Everybody is average. So, both contradict each other, but both are applied, depending on what the other says. To me it always sounded as a knowingly and willingly applied difference, just to try and win an argument. But observing people who do this closer, it seems they truly believe their own statement in a very solid way! SO it is something else but I don't know what! For example; Somebody like me, on the autistic spectrum react many times different than most people. Therefore, people continuously (and really like to) tell me I am different and weird! But than I excel in something or know something they don't, and than they tell me (without arguments of course) that I don't know! That I can not know! That, what I did well, was just coincidence or luck and that I am no different than anybody else! So, I know, it seems like a frustration, and it is! But at the same time very true and people do it all the time towards everybody. It seems to be an ego thing. Competition related, but unconscious! And it is making my point! At the same time they say I am different than the rest, Not at all like them, but when I show being different in a positive way on my side, they deny me being different and have to belong to the "average","we are all the same" group! It is not only a thing I come across. In the futile discussions online between the Woke community and its opponents they shift constantly in the same way too! When you address them as individuals, you are somehow talking to (and offending) the whole group and you are accused of attacking a whole group! But as soon as you address a group in general, they immediately switch and saying things like you cannot place them in a box and they are unique persons so you cannot mention a collective trait as it dehumanizes them and they are so proud on their unique skills! Watching such a discussion is a constant battle in which those manners switch continuously! (BTW; Nothing against individuals and any kind of human personal! I am Bi myself. But I am against Woke, (and MAGA and Trump too!) due to its extremist character. Inclusion by exclusion! We have a set of rights and the others a set of obligations. No neutrality whatsoever. Both are fascist movements and the video is about both groups) Well, anyways, I shouldn't post comments on lazy, tired, sundays I guess...

Many people will find this view too challenging to accept. It flies in the face of the "common sense" approach to understanding things. If most people believe something it is taken as true, whereas minority views are always mocked and derided. This needs to be connected with the detrimental work of Edward Bernays who created our modern consumer society and informed many politicians. Your admonition that people should "Seek reliable sources" needs a big caveat as EVERYBODY thinks that they are already doing this. This merely reenforces the problem of groupthink. I would add further that as an independent thinker it is important that you are willing to question "reliable sources." In other words, don't outsource your thinking. Use logical thinking and question everything as much as possible especially your own beliefs AND sources.

very nicely done and interesting. Too bad the kind of stupidity described by the Dunning Kruger effect (basically, being too dumb to recognize one's dumbness, and instead believing to be smart), especially in all the people who "don't believe in science", makes such people erroneously believe to be real independent thinkers. The video (and possibly, Bonhoeffer) didn't answer my question why people in power seek to employ intentional misinformation and the spreading of stupidity to stabilize their power. Why, for instance, does someone like Musk do that? technically, he is not stupid. He already has more money and influence than anyone else, so what are his motives really to become what he is now, spreading blatant lies and supporting fascism? I really don't understand. Does he want even more power? what kind of stupidity is that?

Does anyone know why stupidity is always tied to violence? Is this a law of nature?
@MindMoneyFusion16 сағат бұрын
Bonhoeffer observed that stupidity often aligns with violence because it thrives in environments where critical thinking is suppressed, and obedience to authority or group dynamics is encouraged. This can lead to harmful actions without reflection. While it might not be a 'law of nature,' it does seem to be a recurring pattern in history.

Stupidity saves energy. Everything you taught to oppose stupidity takes substantial efforts but people are inherently lazy.

This sounds a bit like a *redefinition* of the term. Basic stupidity, the way I've always understood it, is not *directly* related to emotions. It's something that a person is BORN with. A stupid person will have difficulty in school; unable to "wrap his/her mind around" concepts being taught. An idiot will often "jump to conclusions", when thinking about them in an effort to resolve them proves too difficult/confusing. Unfortunately, though, stupidity can *control* and affect emotions (hence, Trump's election to presidency). Stupidity is quite powerful, in its rambling, self-destructive way. It seems like we're currently at its mercy.

“Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.” ― Frank Zappa

There was some slogan in the 90s "The mind is a terrible thing to waste"... but it is now the driving mechanism of modern markets... that's why AI is needed because people are too lazy to think😂 Nevertheless, AI will never replace the satisfaction nincompoop bosses get from yesman minions following them and saying " SIR! Yes Sir!" 😆

Stupidity is definitely not a theory. It's a fact.

if an idiotic question is asked, was it necessary to speak at all? and if a person thinks their stupid would they try to look stupid by asking? although we know the answer already, most stupid people are scared to look stupid. even though autorities sometimes call these people criminals, they are usually victims of poverty. if there is one answer to fixing stupidity, it is consciously choosing to change the way philosophy plays a role in educator's (Ph.D educators to masters and lower to k-12 education) method of an athropology to the approach of how a small human learns how to be who they are. we will always have no crime that way.

I guess people are just following Schopenhauer's advice and pretending to be stupid. Folks compromise with the status quo in view of the fact that those who do otherwise don't do any better.
