What makes this feel special is that in MOST horror movies, the characters die in ways that you could’ve easily avoid. But HERE, the characters are actually SMART. Actual smart dudes who are intelligently enough to try and solve a problem. Who occasionally make VERY fatal mistakes.

This is a damn good movie! Great acting and Great Special Effects! I do also love The Thing From Another World, it’s cheesy, yes, but I still love it!
@capitalcitygoofball19873 жыл бұрын
Caught The Thing at the drive-in opening night and was completely blown away. I'm 99% sure it would have been a hit if it was released in the fall or winter. I know that wasn't super common for big movies back then, but did Universal not look at the insanely crowded summer release schedule and not once consider moving it out of the late June release date? Yeah, critics ripped it to shreds and I remember even Wilford Brimley saying the movie stunk, but John Carpenter is now dancing on their graves. It's just a bummer that JC couldn't buy a hit after Halloween and most of his best work had to be regarded as "cult classics" years after release. The Thing of course being regarded as one of the best Sci-fi horror movies of all time.

@ConfusedReviews3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the “lack of compelling characters” complaint was maybe the most confusing- no pun intended. I kinda understand the VFX being too abrasive to what they were accustomed to, but no characters? They each had insight and moments to shine, all reacting normally and realistically. Thanks, Monty!

Probably up there with the greatest movies ever made.. It's one of those where I struggle to find a single flaw BTW I'm Norwegian and even though he spoils the movie he sounds so irratic that most won't know what he means by the dog is a "thing".. Anyway we always love when we get included in Hollywood movies 😂
@ConfusedReviews2 жыл бұрын
I found it really fascinating that they'd be willing to "spoil" the movie like that - but I guess the 80's weren't as concerned with foreign audiences like they are today.

@@ConfusedReviews i think for most viewers at the time it was more exciting to hear Norwegian spoken in a Hollywood movie than to worry about what he was saying.. I've actually never heard a Norwegian go " I like the thing but damn the beginning spoiled it for me..".. I thinking it's becuase when you first see him he just seems like a crazy man who's shooting at a dog.. If you don't know what the movie is a bout his lines won't really tell you what " it's a thing " even means

Tobe Hooper is considered a master of the genre, but it’s interesting to realize that The Thing and ROTLD probably wouldn’t be as incredible or beloved if he’d been kept on as director of both films. Those films are just unimaginable without Carpenter and O’Bannon.
@ConfusedReviews3 жыл бұрын
Agreed!
@user-dr2yz8um3d2 жыл бұрын
The movie is officially 40 years old! Still one of my favorite horror movies and one of Carpenter's finest, he actually sticks closer to the original short story by John W. Campbell Jr The screenplay was by Bill Lancaster, the late Burt Lancaster's son Kurt Russell is amazing next to Wilford Brimley and Keith David Taps into the fears of our own extinction with themes of mistrust and paranoia There could also be an AIDS allegory Love the fantastic practical special creature effects by Rob Bottin along with the late Ennio Morricone's haunting score Watching The Thing in the time of Covid provides the film an added relevancy Particularly as cases and related fatalities in the UK are both on the rise once more Someone you know and trust is carrying an agent that attacks you on a molecular level and, in a very messy fashion, could stop you being you It's a shame it tanked at the box office and wasn't met with the best reception But over time it has gained much more appreciation and remains big with fans Plus it inspired such acclaimed contemporary filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, J.J. Abrams, Neill Blomkamp, and countless others So happy they made a video game sequel 20 years ago The film continues to reflect man-made apocalypse anxieties (like a literal Cold War between man and alien)
