Interesting note maybe you're aware of. In the video game of the thing, which starts right where the movie leaves off, when your character reaches the now burned out base, you find Child's body next to a whiskey bottle. No MacReady. He appears at the end. Child's body is not burned and don't remember finding the cause of death.

Pacing doesn't hold up in this era. The Thing was fantastic the first time I saw it (late 80s) until today. I watch it at least once a year. One reason Kubrick is overrated is that he filmed so much footage per shot, you can make any movie in any genre with the coverage shot for any of his movies. Any hack can take great actors and do 100+ takes per angle, hire a great editor, and edit at least a great movie out of it. Carpenter has admitted the 1951 THING influenced HALLOWEEN: have a killer you barely see create suspense and pop him in at random to scare people. While the 1982 THING uses more gore and special effects, it enhances the horror at the same time, sowing how painful the transformations are. I have not seen the 2011THING, so I can't speak to how it measures up. But all in all, both THINGS are amazing chillers that have inspired many fans.

Every time I watch this movie, seeing the blood “run away” during the testing scene always leaves me with a lot of questions about the extent of The Thing’s capabilities. If the Thing can expand and contract its body mass in seconds, does that “Thing Blood” have the potential to grow back into another dog, human or whatever else it’s assimilated.. probably. This also makes the Thing far more threatening and leaves me thinking the “rips through your clothes” clue is just a red herring implemented by the Thing to orchestrate what it wants it’s prey to do. If it can infect anything from the smallest residue of a bottle rim or a cigarette, I doubt it needs much to navigate and take its victims. Whose to say that Dog didn’t leave a few severed microscopic pieces of itself around the base and let them infect the rest of base in various methods? I’m telling ya, the Thing is probably the greatest galactic threat to the universe on an organic level, and who knows what other unimaginable technological and sciential knowledge it’s carrying in its collective memories that could make it even more dangerous beyond snatching bodies!
@StitchedTogetherPictures3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's such a great villain and still not completely understood. In the book the Thing is also telepathic and can read minds. But can it in Carpenter's film? Probably not, because I think it'd be way too powerful. Also in the book, the remaining sled dogs and all their cows were imitations. They were horrified that they just recently milked them and didn't know if drinking imitation milk could cause infection. Ew! Also, in the book the cook is hysterically praying to god and driving the others nuts, only to be revealed as a Thing. The Alien was ranting to a god it didn't even believe in. That's how good it hides.

Fantastic work.
@StitchedTogetherPictures3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Remakes can be great. There are more examples. They just have to be made by people who actually care. The problem with a lot of the recent remakes is that they are studio driven to cash in on established properties. People are hired to work on them who are just there for a paycheck. It's not a passion project for anyone involved. Carpenter was a fan of the novella and original film.

This has got to be your best "Boots to ReBoots" episode yet! Nearly all of the jokes landed perfectly (I couldn't stop laughing at the "Oh no, we lost our little buddy!" moment. The timing was perfect), and your answers to the many theories and headcanons make sense. Even though The Fog is my personal favorite Carpenter film, I won't argue with anyone who says his take on The Thing is his best film. It truly is a masterpiece of horror, gore, paranoia, and isolation (The 2011 prequel was just okay. It could've been much better had the studio not gotten their grubby hands on it).
@danielgehring74373 жыл бұрын
I always liked the interpretation that the Thing was an allegory for McCready's alcoholism. The mounting paranoia as those who are considered more valuable by society turn their backs on him one by one, and he ends up turning to his former enemies by the end and just embracing the fact that his whole world has collapsed.
@StitchedTogetherPictures3 жыл бұрын
Listening to the commentary, I guess Mac was a former Vietnam chopper pilot who later ran to Antarctica to get far away from the world. Alcohol definitely plays a bigger part here than I originally realized. Mac's drinking is in the script, but not all the shots of drinking. I wonder if that was the writer, Carpenter or the cinematographer who came up with that. They seem like clues, or possibly red herrings, and could be a statement about alcoholism.
@danielgehring74373 жыл бұрын
@@StitchedTogetherPictures Yeah like I said I do really like the interpretation if nothing else. It seems like kind of a cheat now that I think about, horror movies are there to help us face down the darker aspects of our personalities, so of course the addiction allegory is one of the first to come up. I mean I'd probably want a beer too if I just saw some dude's head turn into a spider and start running away until I torched it. As you said in the video, the fact that we can still come up with these theories as to what it's all about and how it all happened, and tie that all to our lives in some small way, is a pretty good testament to the power of the story. Also I know you get this all the time but I am super thrilled that you responded to me. My all time favourite sci-fi horror film given the honourable Boots to Reboots treatment. Great review Andy you've delivered a fun filled & informative review on this movie masterpiece, this is one of a few films i watched that i wouldn't change a single scene, Carpenter ramps up the drama, mystery & suspense skilfully as the group begin to distrust each other & upon first watch i couldn't work out who was infected. Plenty of carnage candy i seen this film on vhs aged 10 in 1985 wearing headphones connected to the tv (80s gimmick) & that dog scene freaked the shit out of me, i remember the blood test scene traumatised me too yet i couldn't shout out as iwas so engrossed in the movie. The Thing has great cinematography, atmospheric setting with the Antarctic giving a isolated tone to the movie, errie music score, & climaxes with a great ambiguous ending which has lead to many fan speculation & debate, i thought Macready gave Childs a poisonous drink which is why he's smirking at Childs at the climax. If Universal released this October instead of June i think made a lot more money at the box office, still ot became a cult classic thanks to the video rental boom of the 80's so it eventually got the recognition it deserved. Blumhouse keep your grubby paws away from remaking this classic because you'll never top this masterpiece.

Incredible video man. I always felt that Childs was human but after seeing this I'm convinced he was The Thing. It makes to much sense that he would run into the storm to freeze himself. After the camp blows up it returns to see if there are any survivors. When he sees Mac is alive he fails the alcohol test... And the fact that the blue Jacket was missing. Man I love this movie, what a masterpiece.

So fun bit of IMDB trivia: The guy who played the shouting Norwegian guy in the beginning ALSO voiced Hitler in Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Dude's had quite a career.

I always thought the Norwegian said, "Okay a**holes that's my dog, I was the one taking care of him, he's mine, mine....GODDAMNIT STOP LICKING THEM FOR F**K SAKE!" I cant believe it was nominated for the worst soundtrack. Sure it's simple but it works to create the mood and atmosphere.

My one problem with the "Childs is a Thing by the end" is simple, why doesn't it attack Mac? I mean, by that poing Mac was a wreck, there was nothing for the Thing to fear and if the plan was to get frozen until external help arrived to the station, two Things have better odds than just one.
@StitchedTogetherPictures3 жыл бұрын
I mean that very well could happen too. The movie fades to black and we don't know what happens next. They both could've frozen to death, Mac could've fried Childs, Childs could've attacked him or even Mac could've been the Thing and it was all a well executed chess game. Who knows? That's why it's so good.
@yrenekurtz52683 жыл бұрын
@@StitchedTogetherPictures Absolutely! Like you said, the uncertainty and mystery is a big part of what makes it such a good movie and so fun to discuss about.

Because it's almost frozen--and so is Macready for that matter. Why bother, when it just needs to hold out in cryostasis until spring?

Actually with the prequel, the guy who supposedly is "missing" his ear ring. It actually isn't missing. The Thing mistakenly put it on the wrong ear. Which to this day baffles me as it retains the intelligence of its host. They just sacrificed the rules of the creature to create a "shocking twist" that ultimately falls flat.

Ooooh, now this is an interesting one, since people seem to forget the 82 version was a Reboot/Remake

Yeah, it's mostly because the John Carpenter version had its own unique identity and a sense of originality to it(Respective of the original movie).

YES!! One of the absolute greatest horror remakes ever made and one of my favorite John Carpenter movies and one of my absolute favorite horror films of all time as well!! It’s a shame the movie was bashed by critics back when it first came out and was not a box office hit; though even Blade Runner was a box office bomb as well too sadly but both movies are now absolute masterful classics with many questions left unanswered for the audience for decades to come; and thankfully a decade later critics looked back at this masterpiece and realized that this is a brilliant movie with practical effects that still look amazing to this day(I even saw this movie at my university during Halloween; since they will show different horror movies for free; and students who had never seen the entire movie were amazed and fully invested into the movie and even jumped during the chest alien scene and several other scenes when The Thing finally shows itself because it looks amazingly and frighteningly real) and the whole idea of not knowing who truly is The Thing and that there are so many theories, it perfectly gives the audience the sense of paranoia as the characters as well and the ambiguous ending just adds more to mystery. I just knew this would be a perfect episode into looking at what makes this timeless remake a true classic and how to make an amazing remake and of course this would never get the boot; though I will warn you Andy if you ever decide to do a Boots to Reboots on the “remake” of Martyrs or Suspiria, both may be a challenge since especially with the original Martyrs is very hard and I’m not sure you would be able to show any scenes from the original, while the “remake” you can easily show scenes from that disgrace; same if you ever decide to do a Boots to Reboots to Oldboy
