Insightful, and crystalized views I've held for decades. One thing I feel you left out when you went over the characters was The Thing's character. It really was a different beast in 2011 versus 1982.

Good essay. The downbeat ending of the 1982 film is memorable and still inspires interesting debate, but I think it's also one of the reasons "The Thing" flopped. How many people walking out of the theatre back then were thrilled to think that Macready was probably going to freeze to death? I would think very few, so I don't think the blame for the film underperforming can be placed on the release of "ET" as many over the years have suggested. As for the prequel: clearly cg just can't replace the brilliant practical effects work of Bottin and Winston, and the "open your mouth" thing isn't as interesting a method for determining somebody's humanity as Carpenter's amazingly directed blood test sequence. That scene alone, as well as the mayhem in the kennel, make "The Thing" a classic. While the prequel is a nice love letter to that earlier film, it fails to deliver the kind of thrills that worked so well in Carpenter's film. The only aspect that somewhat makes it stand out on it's own was making the main character a woman. That decision, and the ending that catches up to the 1982 film's opening, are all "The Thing" (2011) has that's worth any praise.

Awesome video bro, I agree with you on the elements that make the 82 a really good friken movie. I see John Carpenter as a realistic character too he is one of us a regular dude with his quirks and it shows with the 12 guys in the station just a bunch of dudes in a shitty situation.

I think the biggest problem The Thing 2011 is that it is telling a story that doesn't need to be told. We already know what happened at the Norwegian camp. We saw the burned ruins in the first movie that implied a similar fate awaited the US outpost. Then by the end... we see that has happened. Of-course the Norwegian Camp actually IS the US camp in terms of production. So, this film had an uphill battle. They also cut the film badly, and maybe wrote parts of it badly. The alien in the 2011 movie is a rampaging monster rather than a clever (and cheating) chess master. This was a huge mistake for the writers. Any Thing film needs to be that slow burn; it needs to be a mystery. Of-course, we already had a film like that. A good example of how The Thing 2011 went wrong is how the creature escaped from the ice: it loudly burst out of the block of ice and through the ceiling and went on the attack. It should have been more faithful to the original short story: they start thawing it out and in the morning... it's just gone.

Yes this is a perfect take. I definitely don’t think it need to be made in the first place, but I still think it could’ve been done significantly better.

This just came up for me and it was really well presented. Very succinct and well-edited to get your points across. I love the 1982 movie but never saw the 2011 because of the bad reviews. Although I have a huge DVD and Blu-Ray collection I only got it about 3 months ago. I saw this ages ago on TV but it's been so long I have no idea how much it was edited by. I've only got into what I would call pure horror recently so there are a lot of movies that I am discovering for the first time. I've always seen movies like this and Alien as Sci-fi. Gore generally doesn't bother me because I love watching things on special effects so I can we it for what it is. I can't watch real medical things though.

Here's my feeling on the 2011 remake. It was more or less about Americans instead of Norwegians. We got some, but I always took the 1982 version as the bases were completely different nationalities. That is the reason the shooter and helicopter pilot at the beginning couldn't communicate with the American's, thus the reason for Carry shooting the one who wanted to shoot the dog. And of course we had to have a woman as the main character in the 2011 version when in the 1982 it was all men. The whole aspect of the beginning of the 1982 version is that the Norwegians held the secret of what was going on, and unfortunately for Mac's base, those men had to figure it out for themselves. Hence the reason Blair destroyed the communications shack and his destroying Mac's chopper.

Great video and I agree with you about the prequel. There's nothing much to it and it is quite very forgettable movie. One thing that I think you should have included regarding The Thing from 1982, is the score/soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, because it helped a lot building the suspence of the movie with very few notes and it made the movie a lot scarier. Thanks again for this video.

Best random video clip of the day. I rembember first time watching the 1982 version after the Wall in Berlin falls down. Had to catch up all that western culture stuff. Alone in my first flat at the bottom ( haven't had a couch and so on ) at an old tube television only in black and white modus. It just picked me up emotionally and I slept with the light on afterwards.😱😆The prequel version was just ridiculus, but unfortunately this seems to be increasingly normal. No atmosphere and the behaviour of the protagonists are mostly stereotypical, one-dimensional and psychologically nonsensical. I recommend to try this with the first Alien movie, in black-white modus you more appreciate the H.R.Giger arts... Cannot belief this is your first vid ever, what have you done before?🤔 Very good job!!! And at least your cute cats made my day. You are subscribed and thank you very much! The Thing 2011 I do actually like. Like you said, it's not a terrible film, it's just not a Thing film. Honestly, my biggest gripe about it, (other than the CG), is there are so many Americans in it. No offence to you Americans, but why would a Norwegian science facility hire a bunch of yanks? I don't recall that ever being explained, and I'm sure Norway has it's own expert palaeontologists and other crew without the need to hire foreigners. The 1982 movie is of course, amazing. One of my favourites.

I haven't actually seen the 2011 movie but from what I've seen it seemed very run of the mill in terms of performance. What has suddenly popped into my head is would this make a good TV series? A slightly slower burning single-season of high-production TV.
@bri5511814 сағат бұрын
I don't know if carpenter's thing can be a remake of the Hawks film. The 50s version is loosely based on the story, as the 82 is more true on the novel. The 2011 is more of a remake of the 82. I view the 82 version as a new adaptation of the original story as there is little similar to hawks. Same as not all Dracula movies are a remake of the bela lugosi version. My reason for that is they are based on existing works that predate the first movie version. But it depends on what is considered a remake vs a new interpretation.
@bpt115 сағат бұрын
Yeah I agree I honestly dunno if I’d consider the 82 release a remake either myself but I only mentioned it because I see plenty of people online that do consider it one, it’s on many Letterboxd lists of “the best remakes” and stuff like that so I thought it’d be worth mentioning. I guess it is more up to interpretation, I wonder what John Carpenter himself would classify it as.

@daikhairai71947 күн бұрын
you could have the love interest element in the Prequel, and I'd leave it as carter and i would have him die. but I'd take away his Earing. Presuming the time to go down the love interest route, I'd have that as something explored at around the same rate of pace as the duration of time until the Dog Kennel scene of the Carpenter Movie, Give her Just enough time to get to know this man, Maybe they went for a roll or a few who knows, But the important thing is She has enough time to get intimately Familiar with him So that when he has been changed there's no evidence per se but she Feels something is just Off about him. And know i wouldn't have it done like the ending of the prequel, Not in the Ice Trecker not so obviously. There how ever is a MASSIVE problem with the aspect of a Love Interest element and thats Transmission, Its would be a new, and i think TOO FAR, level of Body horror than we're used too.

The studio bosses screwed themselves by scrapping all the practical effects so they deserve a movie bomb. I do feel sorry for those who put in all the work and passion, though.
@bpt1113 күн бұрын
The team behind the practical effects actually ran a kick starter to produce their own film after being cut from this one, I think they reused a lot of what they had made but don’t quote me on that I haven’t actually seen it. It’s called “Harbinger Down”, might be worth checking out.
