Thanks Keith for a great video. I'm the head of catalogue for Universal in the UK and made these two editions for the UK market in collaboration with Studio Canal. I own all the Studio Canal editions and thought it would be cool to have The Thing as part of a John Carpenter line look, which is why we went with Matt Ferguson as the artist for this one as he did the Studio Canal ones. Hey John thanks so much for coming over and checking out my video. It is very surreal to be talking to someone that's actually involved with these incredible releases from Studiocanal. I thought adding The Thing to the rest of John Carpenter studio canal releases was a touch of genius and I would love to see more of Carpenters movies done the same way even though I know that's not possible. I thought the artwork was very nice on both these editions but I have to admit I've seen better on the other ones. Not trying to put Matt Ferguson down because he still did a great job on these. So chuffed that its turned out this good..overall i think its an incredible release👍

I can't believe it either Garry. How can you knock this movie on and think it's an average upgrade over the Blu-ray. They're either blind or the equipment sucks. Totally agree with you, the Zavvi steelbook was better than the Amazon. I went for the collectors edition. I'm absolutely over the moon with it. They could of released this film in an empty bog roll!! Still would of bought it! 😂 Love the film that much. Keep up the great work and vids, always appreciate your thoughts.

Yeah I completely agree with everything you said. I didn't care how it came once it came and I had the 4K disc. The transfer is unbelievably special and I'm looking forward to watching it again for Halloween. It's definitely one of my go-to Halloween movies.

I received my collectors edition a few days ago will post a unboxing video on Saturday. This is the first time I'm hearing people are not impressed with the 4K transfer, from everything I've read and heard this is the best The Thing has ever looked. Thanks for the review.

I completely agree, the transfer is fantastic and I was thrilled that there were zero compression artifacts, such as the dreaded macroblocking.

I was never really concerned when it came to the picture quality on this film. I knew they were going to do a great job but if I'm being completely honest I didn't think it would look as good as it does. Thanks Mark for checking the video out

I really do think Martin that if you have an OLED TV you'll definitely get a huge advantage in picture quality and this movie was a prime example. When you see the black levels in this movie you just couldn't hit them if you didn't have an OLED. Great to hear that you thought it look amazing as well.

I think if you've seen the likes of Halloween, escape from New York or the Fog and you got nothing out of them movies then chances are you won't get anything out of his later movies. Yeah got to see my 4k copy and as you said, the picture is a serious upgrade on the original. Blacks are inky and the detail is mesmerising! You would think the movie was only made last week! Looks great on my Sony A90J oled 4k TV. Cheers Bro!

i live in the states i have the universal version on 4k.I think its the same print as the studio canal this was a huge upgrade for me i have it on DVD the collector edition with 5.1 i have a 7.2.2 Dolby atoms home theater surround sound it sounds awesome and the new 4k picture looks great on my 75 inch lg tv.

No it is the same release because it wasn't studio canal that released it over here it was universal. Great to hear that you enjoyed the picture as much as I did. I was a little bit disappointed by the sound but I still think it's sounded fantastic. Hopefully we can get a few more John Carpenter movies on 4k. Thanks James for checking out the video. Got my Collector's edition a few days ago from Amazon UK and I have the same dent as you do on my box. Amazon could do a better job packing the blu-rays. But as long as the movies don't arrive in bits and pieces I'm ok with it. Can't wait to have a watch, The Thing is my favorite movie by John Carpenter. I also think that the Zavvi steelbook looks better than the Amazon one. Pre-ordered Escape from New York collector's edition and now I'm hoping that they would do a Collector's edition of In the Mouth of Madness. One of Carpenter's most underrated movies in my opinion.

It's amazing when you think of Amazon and their packaging because they don't realise how much of a difference bubble wrap makes with protecting these releases. I couldn't believe how good the transfer looked and I really hope you get the same experience that I did. Could you imagine getting the collector's edition of in the Mouth of Madness. Without question John Carpenter most underrated movie and hopefully it will get the treatment that it deserves.

Yeah John to be honest I think this is the definitive edition of The Thing and I can't see this getting released again. My jaw dropped during this entire movie. Still can't believe there was people out there they didn't like it's transfer. Unfortunately you can't please everyone

Yeah it really is a shame that there's no new special features. When you see a top release like this you do expect brand new features but unfortunately it never happened. What you are getting is a very special 4K transfer and I suppose that's why we buy these movies.

Keith you and John {Mondo Chelloveck} are my go to guy's for 4K as you both tell it how it is, i think like everyone else had said i to had heard bad reviews about the PQ, i do own the Arrow release of this, will not get the boxset and don't really collect steelbooks so for me i can wait for the price to go down on the normal release to sit with my Arrow, thanks again for the unboxing and review mate.

Another great video/review (why am I even surprised by now?). I bought the iTunes 4K HDR version and watched it last night. I have to agree, it looks amazeballs and people who find it to be only a slight bit better that previous releases should check their setup. I do own the 2K-mastered Shout! Factory and 4K-mastered Arrow Films releases and thought they were good to great, but this one tops them quite easily. Have been reading more negative comments about the audio on the UHD, but the iTunes version has only a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that sounded fine to me. Not sure if it's a lossy downmix of the DTS:X mix on the UHD or just a lossy mix of the previously used 5.1 mix. Cheers for now!

Yeah I will never fully understand the criticism that this disc got. That's why I insisted in the video that they check their equipment because this is a stunning release. I was a little underwhelmed by the audio only for the simple reason that it sounded no different from the arrow release. But having said that the audio still sounds great and I had no issues with it at all. I think sometimes people just like to complain.

@@millerman9991 Some people seem to have glitching discs, so I can understand them complaining about that, but not about the PQ. Audio seems to be really setup specific, so we might just be lucky. Will compare the audio from the iTunes stream to the Arrow Blu-ray today and will watch The Invisible Man tonight and also compare the Blu-ray to the UHD. Do you watch you SDR-content at the reference standard of 100 nits? Just curious, as you have you're setup calibrated.

Hello, awesome collection, I was lucky over here in the US I found (The Thing) the last one, 4k w/slipcover for only $23! What a deal. However I was going to get the steelbook from Zavvi but it was always sold out. My picture on my LG was awesome, so crisp and clear. Now, due to the season I must mention, I was watching Halloween Resurrection last night on AMC while at work. OMG, I didn't recall this movie at all. Absolutely awful, once Busta Rhymes put on the mask and was talking to MM, I was so confused and changed the channel. With all do respect, I love the original and part II is fantastic. What's your opinion on Resurrection? Thank you for the review.

Oh no Joel why would you put yourself through watching that heap of s*** Halloween Resurrection. It's hard to believe that film was directed by the same person that directed part 2 Rick Rosenthal. How do you go from making probably the greatest sequel to making the worst Halloween movie I will never fully understand. So as you can clearly tell I hate this movie. Every facet of this film pissed me off and I will never watch it again. Great to hear that you're able to pick up the thing at a great price with the slip. The picture quality is fantastic and I couldn't be more pleased about this release

With the negative supply chain delays we're being hit with, it's the worst time in history to try getting products via delivery. Do not order anything more until this disaster abates. But more importantly do not lend out any film on 4K or blu-ray to anyone else from your collection because you'll run the certain risk of never seeing it again.

No question about it it's a rough time when it comes to deliveries at the moment. It's shocking to think that you're actually praying before your parcels come through the door hoping that they're not destroyed and don't get me started on lending out Blu-rays and 4K to friends. I really do have some horror stories when it comes to that

The new DTS:X audio track is a very disappointing remix. It's not as robust as the previous DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix or the 4.1 mix. A lot of background audio and music cues are barely audible and in some instances, completely muted. Also, the decrease in the bass is dramatic. I found it so annoying that I returned my purchase for a refund.

I was a little let down by it myself. I remember feeling very underwhelmed by the dts-x soundtrack on this and it didn't seem to add anything more than the previous DTS 5.1 we had on The Arrow release. I don't think my experience with it was as bad as yourself. I just felt it didn't add too much to it
