Gary wasn't exactly one of my favourite characters up to this point (despite, as you said, how good Moffat was), but I was thankful the script allowed him to be finally treated with respect. I was even more thankful that when McCready says "Maybe we shouldn't survive!", Gary is shown to register the implications and subtly nod his agreement. It allowed an unfairly maligned character to go out nobly. But Moffat did steal the film even with this one line of dialogue.

One of the few ‘perfect’ movies. Everything works from start to finish.
@BLZ231 Жыл бұрын
Eh, debatable. I just saw it last night for the first time, and it is a really good movie. But I wouldn’t say it’s perfect, it’s got some flaws. For me the biggest problem is that The Thing’s intelligence and speed seems to go up or down depending on what’s convenient for the plot. Sometimes it acts intelligent and cunning, but other times it acts irrational and animalistic. I mean it would have to be at least somewhat intelligent in order to pass as a human, but then as soon as the Palmer thing gets found out it flails around like a mindless animal. It could easily have killed Windows faster and then got Macready before he could get the flamethrower to work, and then the rest of them would have been easy pickings since they’re tied up. After that it could have assimilated them all and waited for a rescue team to arrive to infect the rest of the planet. But instead it just acts like a mindless animal. But then later the thing is smart enough to take out the generator. And the nature of the assimilation is inconsistent as well. When it assimilated Bennings it was fairly quick and silent, and it was just bad luck that it got discovered, but when it tried to assimilate the dogs it was rather slow and loud, and it’s no wonder that it got caught before it could finish. And while most of the effects are good and do look visceral and real, some look and move more like puppets. Overall I’d say Alien is the stronger monster horror film from that time period, as the effects are more convincing, and the alien’s behavior and capabilities are more consistent throughout the film.
@ExposeDrift Жыл бұрын
Alien is also top tier, but could be accused of moving too slow. Whereas The Thing just ‘gets on with it’ - pure storytelling entertainment. You make good points about the inconsistencies in intelligence, but I don’t see this as a flaw I see this as completely realistic. Most living things display inconsistent intelligence depending on the situation. A human can be cunning/subtle but then act irrational when suddenly exposed - eg when a killer get caught because they made a stupid mistake then everything falls apart. I don’t see why The thing would be any different… I think the speed of the assimilation is commensurate with whether the thing is in disguise or in its pure form. I’ve always interpreted it as the thing needs a host to function at optimal effectiveness, which is why it seems more intelligent and can assimilate quickly. When it doesn’t have a host it’s vulnerable and needs to recalibrate itself before it can figure out what to do - like a wounded predator it must abandon subtlety and find a way to just survive.
@josephwj719911 ай бұрын
@@BLZ231 You're making an assumption about the time elapsed for the process of Bennings to get assimilated. The scene cuts several times and it's never made explicit how much time passes exactly. There is room to allow that Bennings' attack was also lengthy. In fact, even when they got to him outside, he was still not complete with being assimilated. Bennings was also alone and separate from the others, and he was ambushed. One can easily make the case that the Thing got him by surprise before he could scream; even if he did scream, nobody was close by to hear or witness it. About the dog assimilation being loud, that was entirely the barking of the group of dogs, nothing to do with the Thing. I mean, when the Palmer-thing was discovered, everybody was raising hell vocally just the same. Also in regards to how fast it assimilates organisms, it was surrounded by several dogs really close by, yet it didn't get to all of them in the time that passed. We later find this to actually be the case because when Blair killed the rest of the dogs, they simply died by the axe strikes (if they were infected, that would not have killed them). For the Palmer-thing attacking everybody in the room, if it was that easy for it to do, the Bennings-thing could have just as easily done the same in the snow when everybody was circled around it, only about 4 feet away equal. IMO, it's not that simple with this creature. You're also assuming what its intelligence entails, or that all Thing entities share the same intelligence, thought process, reaction and abilities. The way it behaves, acts and strikes is highly unpredictable. That's part of the central theme to the movie, how little anybody really knows.

Southsideman I know this comment was 5 months ago, but still. So "The Thing" is an alien shapeshifter that is killing the humans. As the name "shapeshifter" suggests, it can disguise itself to look like a human (or INFECT a human, if you like). So what they are doing is they are taking all the blood samples of everyone and they are putting a hot metal rod into each sample. "The thing" will try to protect its blood, hence revealing who is infected.

Considering what just happened before, it's understandable that Childs was in a mad rush to get away from the guy next to him.

I met Donald Moffat. My mom and I saw him in an A and P in Hopewell New York. We kept seeing him until we stopped him and my mom said she swore she had seen him before. He said that he had played in a few movies. I was young at the time and I was horror movie obsessed so I started jumping. "You're the guy strapped to the couch" I said and my mom recognized him from that Harrison Ford movie a clear and present danger. We got his autograph and still have it. So sad he passed away last year.

Whats even funnier is this guy was sitting right next to The Thing when it went crazy and somehow he doesnt get infected while the guy who had a flamethrower was rushed and shredded. The creature knew they were easy pickings

After what they just been through with Palmer I think they’re all just so tired that when the relief that they can reassure each other that they’re not the thing allows them to rightfully explode with frustration from being on edge all the time. I mean imagine being in a tense situation but if you decide to act all aggressive or explode you end up making yourself look more guilty so finally when your cleared of any suspicion you can let all your emotions out.

Hands down the best line in the film.

What I think is far more funny is Child's whining about being cut loose, no response, and then they just cut to the next shot where he's been cut out hahahaha.
