The ultimate exploration of a cinematic classic, ‘The Thing Expanded’ will be centered on an in-depth analysis led by none other than John Carpenter himself. The documentary will include a wealth of memories, stories, facts, rabbit-hole tangents and theories about the 1982 film and its origins and influences that Carpenter fans demand, including discussion of the 2011 prequel, video game sequel, RPG, comics, merch, the original John W. Campbell novella Who Goes There? and much more.

This looks exciting. I've recently been pulled into this reading everything I can about this movie. I watched this as a child when my Dad brought it home as a rental. Didn't think much of it then, but revisiting it as a middle-aged man has me very interested in the theories and debunks that surround this title. Carpenter's genius is evident by keeping the most important details vague and maintaining the unknown all the way to the end. Incredible.

I love how Carpenter based the movie on the book - unlike the fifties version. The book and Carpenter’s version were truly terrifying on multiple levels. I don’t think Carpenter thought “The Thing” was going to be a masterpiece, but he filmed it as a serious film for the ages. I bet Kurt Russell didn’t think “The Thing” was going to make him a serious star either. Before “The Thing”, Russell was known for being a child actor in Disney movies (except for “Escape from New York”). I bet he got the part in “Silkwood” thanks to John Carpenter. Every actor did a great job, and several were in other Carpenter films. These actors clearly liked Carpenter and felt his films were good for their careers - and they were right! Even the computer scene with the doctor was the right move, even though computers weren’t that advanced at the time. It wasn’t meant to be technically accurate, rather a quick exposition. Forty years later, it looks pretty reasonable. I was just thinking that “The Thing” was part of Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy, so I suspect that the “The Thing’s” ending was meant to be the beginning of the end of the world.

it's not a remake. it was a book. this one is very different to the 1951 version

@fuzzjunky Well, that's what I call it, and I'm not the only one calling it a remake. Pretty much every article out there about it calls it that. Even Screenrant did an article on why it's the best remake of all time. It's a great film no matter what it's called.

The thing is possibly one of my favorite movies of all time, but I just want to know what about this documentary is so different or even worthy of a purchase versus the behind the scenes and the commentaries that something like Shout Factory has put together for The Thing?

I'm not saying this needs to happen, but I'm curious what everyone thinks about AI recreating the end fight scene that was scripted but never filmed?
@AgentofLADON
@AgentofLADON 6 ай бұрын
Gotta vote no myself. I like the current ending. Though I oppose using AI I am open to using multiverse technology to buy a copy of the movie from a timeline with that scene filmed. I believe dvd sales across the multiverse will pay for the multiverse research many times over.
