Actually, it's always the Female Reactors that have instant Love and Sympathy for Dog Thing. Once it transforms in the dog room though.......man, do they get bloodthirsty. I suppose they want revenge for letting everyone see how gullible they are and hate being easily tricked by an emotional trigger. The Guys tend to be massively puzzled by why the Norwegians are trying to kill the dog. As soon as it transforms, they get behind the kill/burn it solution. Btw, Miranda, that wasn't Copper reanimated at the end of the movie sticking his hand in Garry's face, that was Blair. He got blowed up real good.

Well.. calling it Norwegian is kind of generous. As in, yes, it is Norwegian, but it is most certainly not a native Norwegian speaker (though i absolutely give Carpenter a pass on that, hehe) :) From this clip : "det er en slags ting, then something completely indecipherable, then "det er ikke virkelig". Roughly translates to "Its some sort of thing, its not real" (which, considering what happens in the movie is probably meant to be "thats not its true form" or something).

It really depends on who is doing the CGI, and it's said, some of the best CGI is when you can't tell it's CGI at all, in other words, CGI is fine, but like anything, there's a massive range of quality depending on who is doing the work, just like there is with practical effects. Overall, CGI is better than practical effects in the right hands as it can look as real as real life, but clearly there's a big range in quality from movie to movie, even big budget movies, which I suspect it's because of the tools making the CGI, as it can't be the computing power, because even standard desktop PC's can do some impressive effects nowadays.

The film was not well received by critics, calling it "instant trash, boring, dull, and a wretches excess." It bombed at the box office, making $19 million dollars against a $15 million dollar budget. It has since gained a cult following overtime and has been regarded as one of John Carpenter's best movies. The Dog Kennel Sequence was done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Stan Winston after Rob Bottin fell ill with heat exhaustion and a bleeding ulcer Winston received a "Special Thanks" credit at the end. Thr film was made in Juneau Alaska, Stewart, British Columbia, Vancouver, and Universal Studios, Hollywood CA. The sounds of The Thing when it transforms are that of alligators, crocodiles, rattlesnakes, horses, pigs squealing, and human screams played backwards or slowed down to make it sound otherworldly and terrifying.

There are a lot of commenters mentioning fan theories about the ending, but the truth is there is no answer to the question “is one of them a Thing”. It is a perfect note to end the film on.

Yes there is in 2023 Carpenter made it clear he knew who was the thing and who wasn’t. And he debunked the eye light theory because he said they wouldn’t do it twice. Or to mention the Child’s breath theory is demonstrably proven wrong. Most people get the ending of the movie all twisted up with the comic and game that came after that tried to answer the question. And after all, what’s wrong with a little mystery in a movie.

A League of Their Own has something similar. Only 4 people know if Dottie dropped that ball on purpose, the two writers, the director, and the actress, none of which have told, with the actress going one step further and saying that she'll never tell. Even something as simple as the whispered words from Dany to Jorah's body at his funeral fit the bill. 02:22: *ONLY* Miranda would *bop* to "The Thing" music! 02:52: "Puppy! Already a 10/10!" And here. . . we. . . go. 05:06: Miranda, translating from dog while ignoring the portentous Norwegian. . . 06:08: Technically, no. Antarctica (and the arctic, for that matter), do have seasons, pretty much just summer and winter. Or "Day" and "Night." 06:34: "Oh no. Is this movie going to get gross, guys?" Only incredibly, unbelievably so. Buckle up, sister, you're in for a ride. 07:47: "Yeah, I'd be keeping the dog with me the WHOLE TIME." Nice knowing you, Miranda. 09:38: LOTS of stuff to research in Antarctica. I literally don't even know where to begin, all I know is there's tons of stuff, scientists and camps from all over the world doing all kinds of really smart stuff. 11:50: "He's so cute! The dog's making me smile!" That'll cha-- "For now. Pretty sure it's on borrowed time." Well, you could say that. . . 14:23: "No! Keep the dog with you! Who else is going to alert you to the danger?" Technically. . . the dog *will* alert them to the danger. . . 18:30: And there it is! Exactly. In fact, if you understand Norwegian, the whole plot gets spoiled right away. What the guy says roughly translates to "No, get away from it! It's not a dog, it's a thing! It's just imitating a dog! Get away, you idiots!" For those of us who've seen the movie, there's a kind of perverse pleasure in watching reactors. You all start out "Aw, cute doggie. . . what is WRONG with those guys in the helicopter? Oh, the dog is so cute. Nothing better happen to the dog." Then, twenty minutes later, you're right on board with "KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!" 27:34: "So it's a game of whodunit now?" Even worse. You can't rely on traditional motive, because no one would have a motive. . . unless they were the Thing. But you can't tell who is or is not the Thing, thus who does and does not have motive. Thus it's down to means and opportunity, both of which can be faked if you're clever enough. 39:26: They actually used the bombed-out American camp after the climax as the bombed-out Norwegian camp in the beginning. Shooting out of order, obviously, but why build a set and a trashed set when you can build a set, trash it on-camera as the climax, then still film in it for an earlier scene that calls for a trashed set?

The portentious Norwegian who could not speak English at all was a bit of a stretch, even 40 years ago. Particulary in Antarctica. In the prequel, made 30 years later, that character was _the only guy_ at the Norwegian research station who did not speak English. That detail called attention to itself. Besides, in the prequel, the boss at the Norwegian station was cast with a Danish actor. Allegedly because Dennis Storhøi showed up drunk, and was fired from that movie. I suppose they wanted another Scandinavian actor who was at least _a little_ famous abroad, and quickly, hence the Dane. Denmark still owns Greenland, so why not...

5:32. Hey Miranda! Since you don't know your guns, happy to help! The rifle is a German made Heckler & Koch HK93A2. It's chambered in 5.56 NATO. Not a "sniper rifle" in the way that we most often label them. It's more so akin to an M16A2 or an M4, which most would consider an "assault rifle." Your outro guessing the ending. "I will never believe MacCready was guilty." Weeeelllll... He was fine during the blood test. So was Childs (the other survivor at the end). But Childs was missing for the whole final scene, plenty of time for Blair to get him. So is he a thing? Yes, see below. MacCready was human until the last minute. When he exploded the giant Blair Thing monster, it got all over him and turned him. Some time later we see him stagger out and sit down. 30 seconds? 30 minutes? No way to be sure. But it definitely could be long enough to fully transform into a Thing. Then Childs walks up, also possibly a Thing. Earlier in the movie, MacCready told everybody that the Thing wants to freeze and then surprise the rescue team in the Spring. When he then tells Childs "Let's just sit here a while and see what happens." that is a Thing that imitated MacCready and it is really doing exactly what MacCready predicted - waiting to freeze. Childs had the flame thrower. He should have said "No way. I'm human and you might not be, so I'm not gonna freeze to death and let you kill the world." and then he should have burned MacCready. I would have. If he turned out to be human, I would have been wrong but he would have frozen to death in a few minutes anyway, and at least I would know the world won't die. But Childs didn't do that. Because he's also a Thing, and freezing is what he wants. Then MacCready takes a drink then gives Childs the bottle and Childs drinks too which makes MacCready laugh. If Childs were human and MacCready were a thing, drinking from that bottle would kill him. They both know that. I wouldn't have touched that bottle. But Childs drank because he's already a Thing and has nothing to fear. MacCready laughed because he is also a Thing and now he knows that Childs is too. OK, maybe my assumption about MacCready is wrong. He might not have turned. In that case he's freezing to death and injured, weaponless, and helpless. I'm sure I'm right about Childs. Maybe MacCready laughed because he knew he'd lost? Either way, as the camera pulls out and fades to black, it's playing the music that ONLY plays when we are looking at a Thing. So one of them is for sure, which has to be Childs, and my theory that MacCready is too doesn't matter much - Childs will either assimilate him to make another Thing or just let him die.

@blakewalker84120
@blakewalker84120 2 ай бұрын
@@thomaselvidge Not a bad theory. Of course, Mac might have had a gun under his coat. Maybe the Childs-Thing was trying to be cautious. I'm not even sure that they can recognize each other. Logically, I suppose that if a creature could evolve with the ability to mimic other creatures perfectly, that evolution might need to include some instinctive way to recognize other mimics. But maybe not. In any case, I still maintain that if Childs were human, he should have a) killed MacCready right away, just to be sure. b) never, ever, EVER taken that drink from that bottle. Childs didn't toast MacCready and he did drink which would be the dumbest move in all of human history, which leads me to believe he was a Thing.
@juanausensi499
@juanausensi499 2 ай бұрын
I can agree. The logical reaction would be torching the other person, because they don't know if the other one is a thing, and they can't risk the thing just freezing. But nobody torched anybody, and that only makes sense if both were things. There is flaw, tho: maybe they weren't thinking rationally at that point.

Apologies if someone has already disclosed this: This movie is the second adaption of a long short story/novella by the author John W Campbell written in 1938 called "Who Goes There", which is about a team of researchers in the frozen isolation of an Arctic drift ice station that make an unexpected discovery. It was originally adapted to a movie in 1951 called "The Thing From Another World". While it didn't feature the shape-shifting aspect of the story that was present in the original story, it had all the suspense and paranoia, but for different reasons. You might appreciate it for that, Miranda, because it is considered one of the best Sci Fi movies of its era, and all time. Worth a watch for sure. And the gag/gore level is set way low, by today's standards. This movie actually takes the original premise of the discovery of an alien who is able to perfectly imitate other creatures and spread itself, so the paranoia of who is who is the very essence of what can be attributed to a haunted house scenario: A bunch of people trapped in a horrifying inescapable location. I am a huge fan of the original story, which I read long after I saw the 1951 movie, and was confused by the whole shape-shifting aspect. It wasn't until I saw this movie, which is way more explicit in the transformations than the "Who Goes There", but the nail biting suspense and overwhelming paranoia even surpassed the written effort. Who knew that a pulp fiction sci fi story from 1938 could lead to not one, but two iconic movies decades apart. And just a final fun fact, the font and the fiery reveal of the movie title at the beginning was exactly how it was done in the 1951 movie. So, um, there.

Dude, settle down. Even the characters in the movie just wrote it off as "these dudes are crazy, it's just a dog". The movie encourages you to take the dogs side, and the affection human beings feel towards dogs is not a new development, and it's not even particularly rare for filmmakers to take advantage of that fact. This generational hubris is just as much a flaw as not asking "why?" is. Before WW2 the cultural elders thought that the "Greatest Generation" was too concerned with hot rods and dancing to actually be worth a damn in a war, and look how that turned out. "Every generation after Gen X" like millennials didn't fight wars all over the Middle East for the last two decades, sheesh.

So, are you saying that when someone is using a firearm, actively attacking a creature that would normally NEVER be attacked in such a manner (especially in this setting and environment) you're not going to question their motives? The characters in the film, they react that way because they don't know that we're watching a sci-fi horror movie. The viewer that is capable of engaging in critical, and more educated, thought is witnessing the whole thing through vastly different eyes. Also, I'm a millennial. I'm well aware of what my generation has been involved in, globally. It still doesn't change the simple fact that they still react almost universally the same.

You can take a small cloth full of water, put it close to them and they will hold on and drink the water. Have one in my kitchen that always watches me do dishes. If I walk across the room, it turns and watches. Most spiders wouldn't bite you unless they had no other choice. 👍

There is another "The Thing" movie made in 2011, but it is a prequel. It is based at the Norwegian camp. A lot of peeps knock it, but I think it is a great movie

There's a theory that the offered alcohol was refilled with gasoline, as a test. And as the drink was accepted and 'enjoyed', that was an obvious alien pretending to enjoy the weird earthling drink.

Especially since during that conversation out in the cold, you could clearly see MacReady's breath as he spoke. Childs... not so much.

That assumes facts not in evidence, how susceptible the Thing is to chemicals while imitating and how good the imitation is. If it really is a perfect imitation, it should know that it was not being given whiskey but gasoline, and spit it out. It would have imitated Childs' taste buds perfectly, too. Just like Norris!Thing imitated the heart condition of the real Norris.

@@frighty You can see Childs' breath, too, it's just harder to notice because the angle of the lightning. And technically, neither of them should have fogging breath, because there isn't enough moisture in the air in Antarctica to cause your breath to fog.

Every reaction to this masterpiece I watch, they’re instantly concerned about the dog - which actually often helps blind them to what’s going on like in this case, but when I first saw this in the mid 00’s I distinctly remember thinking, “that’s odd, why are they so keen on killing that dog?” and the follow up holding shots on the dog made it clear (to me anyway) something was off with the dog and to keep an eye on that. In fact at the time I felt they should have been more subtle about it and had it work even better but apparently not because most people completely miss the suspect aspect of the dog these days! Btw, the 2011 prequel is criminally underrated imho. Well worth a watch. It’s an excellent homage to the original and includes parts of the original story that weren’t included in this. The lore surrounding the thing specifically. Also the recreated sets are just 😘

John carpenter made this movie in the way so we the audience can come up with our own ideas about who was a thing and who wasn't. After all these years, John Carpenter finally broke his silence about it a little when he was asked if one of them were a thing at the end, and all he said was Yes. There are thousands of videos of theories about it and I think that's what makes the movie great. All these years later and we're still talking about it lol

This is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, and it was so hilarious and cute to see Miranda's reactions! She also caught things really well for a first-time viewer, and called a lot of stuff that was going to happen, so good job! The only part for me I hate watching every time is the poor doggies 😭It looked like Miranda felt the same. I can watch people get devoured by monsters and its fine, lol, but leave the fur babies out of it! But overall, it looks like she really enjoyed the movie. And I totally agree, the practical effects in this film are outstanding and better than anything CGI could do, even 40 years later. The prequel movie from 2011 had some great parts, but not using practical effects brought it down a few notches, imo. Thanks for this fun reaction video, you have a new subscriber Miranda!

ah, that was a fun movie reaction! Here's more fun stuff, There are always a lot of speculation about some things - but - the movie should foreshadow if some thing is supposed to be - for example do we ever see a Thing drink alcohol? We notice a lot of characters took a drink, and so they were all proven human? Also... remember Blair knew what was going to happen... and in the shack later we see a noose - this means Blair wanted to use that on himself but when we see him later he's all changed and wants to be let back in - this is "surely" giveaway that he was already taken over. The noose is left hanging there for our viewing pleasure. So the thing-as-Blair did things like build that ship to try and fly away, and he got the captain(?) near the end, yes that was Blair-thing. Another thing... this is just about almost the sequel to the original The Thing in black & white. In that original movie they found the circular ship and found a thing in the ice which they brought indoors...

Fun fact: the computer did NOT win the chess game; the "win" was an error, and the computer did not recognize it. That is Why McReady threw his scotch into the CPU.

Something interesting, the scene where Copper tries to use the defibrillator on Norris and his chest opens up and bites off Copper's arms, they actually hired an actor who was a double amputee. He had lost both of his arms from the elbows down in a machining accident. They paid him to be Copper's stunt double, and constructed a fake set of forearms and hands from wax and foam rubber, then filled them with stage blood. Finally, they attached the "arms" to the actor's elbows using modeling clay, and had the Thing's mouth bite them off.

I love that Childs was going to let MacReady freeze to death on the off-chance that he might be the thing, but calls MacReady shooting Clark murder, even though Clark was lunging at his neck with a scalpel.

Thank you for reacting to this. one of my all time favorites. At the end, Blair did not escape into the storm, he was the giant creature that popped out of the ground. I think he was feeling a bit cocky at the end since McCreedy was the last, so he though "what the heck? Why not take on another form?". As for sequels, there haven't been any. However, there was a prequel that came out back in 2011, telling the story of the Norwegian base. It was actually a decent movie. But I wouldn't call it grand like I do this one. It left me with some questions in regards to its transitioning to this one.
