The Thing (Xbox) Review - The Poorly Named Sequel

The Thing is honestly one of the best licensed games out there. I CAN understand why some might not like it, but it pulls off the tension and paranoia the original film mastered whilst doing its own thing for gameplay purposes, plus it controls really well and has creature designs on par with the film. It does get ball-bustingly hard, however, particularly during the sections with auto turrets and tripmines. Horror gamers have never lived until they've taken an ally's blood test and discovered that The Thing is learning to bypass it through one of the surprise scripted transformations.

Yeah, it's atmosphere is one of its strongest aspects, and the turret sequences can get a little frustrating if you've spent all your health packs! The creature designs show that the developers actually cared about what they were making, and the controls are actually pretty comfortable once you find what works!

Haven’t played this game, but it definitely looks interesting. Too bad that the story doesn’t make much sense within the lore, some features are clearly unfinished, and is jank at times. I’m sure I’d have fun if I look past the fact that bullets shouldn’t be able to kill the smaller things. I’d be perfectly fine with human enemies since they’d add variety into the game. It’s so weird how we haven’t had any other games set in The Thing’s setting. There’s a lot of really cool things they could do with a monster whose tactics revolve around concealment, infection, and transforming into all manner of twisted abominations when threatened. The themes of paranoia with humans who can freak out and turn on you has a lot of potential. I’d want to see a game where the Thing has a modular design, human’s don’t trust you or each other, and having a large degree of procedural generation in the base’s layout. That would be cool. Apparently, there was a cancelled sequel, but that sadly fell through. Great video. I’ll probably check your other stuff out.

Thanks a lot, mate! Yeah, it's certainly not a perfect game, but it's nice to see some actual effort was put in, even if the results were mixed.. I'd say John Carpenter would want a other game, but who knows how much it would cost, and who would approve it!

I played this religiously on ps2 and loved it for its unique mechanics and atmosphere at the time especially the trust mechanic, yet years later i realized my only gripe after seeing reviews is how the transformations are all scripted so you know who it is. I found myself purposely taking weapons back from certain people beforehand. Nowadays if they want they could be able to have it random to make replayability unique and if a mechanic you needed turned out to be a Thing, it would mean taking an alternate route to progress.

Yeah, it's a really undercooked mechanic that could have been brilliant! There's so much here that could be refined, and tightened up for modern audiences!

I bought and beat this exact version for the first time maybe 6 months ago so its fairly fresh in my memory. This game is flat out cheap in random parts and just oddly paced all around. I want to say i overall liked the overall game but i definitely walked away feeling like the whole of it entirely missed the film as well as any tension. By yhe airplane hangar section youre basically knowing to just cheap enemies out by getting them stuck and locking on and gunning them down, assuming everyone will transform, shooting first. Hell the flamethrowerr is practixally useless until you realize "oh. He shoots at the ground first and not steaight forward unless your in the fps perspectives" Overall though i like it if only for a single playthrough once in a blue moon.

Yeah, it's definitely lacking in a lot of areas, and getting used to how the flame thrower works was a little frustrating at first. This was my first time playing the game, and I'd probably give it another go at some stage!
