I'd recommend that you still try to learn when and where macrons occur, especially since you may later be reading from texts that do include macrons (or poetry, where the line is determined by long and short syllables).
@latintutorial12 жыл бұрын
Your teacher is right about the (lack of) use of the macron in ancient times, but wrong about its usefulness today: 1. For non-native Latin speakers (everyone), the macron tells us which vowels are long and which are short, to ensure proper pronunciation. 2. Certain cases are identified by a long vowel (-a vs. -ā in 1st declension). Is mīles nom/acc pl or nom sing? It's singular because of the short -es (the plural is mīlitēs). 3. If you read poetry, knowing longs and shorts is very handy.

That could just be a style choice by the dictionary. Some dictionaries don't show long marks on vowels followed by two consonants (so called long-by-position). Lewis Elementary Dictionary is good, as is Cassell's. You can also use wiktionary online, too. For authority, use the Oxford Latin Dictionary, which I believe follows the "no macra on vowels followed by two consonants" rule.

Just curious, what does Latin officially classify the letter "u" as, a noun or a consonant? Since it sometimes functions like a w, as in "servus", or an "oo" sound, like "diu", is it just both?
@latintutorial6 жыл бұрын
The ancients understood that u and i functioned as both consonants (consonantes) and vowels (vocales).

Just one question: how do we know which nouns are masculine and which are feminine?
@latintutorial6 жыл бұрын
For words that don’t have a natural gender (so, miles, soldier, masculine, has a natural gender), the best thing to do is to look it up, or use contextual clues to infer the gender (like an adjective that helps you with gender). There are patterns for gender in the third declension (e.g., -tus, -tutis words are feminine), but memorizing those rules may not be time well spent. And, you’ll internalize those rules the more you are exposed to third declension words and their gender.
@WillelmusAestus6 жыл бұрын
Oh, so I guess it's a memory thing, even though it may become a second nature with time. Alright then, thanks for the reply.

principis could also be a, o declension dativ and ablative plural right? Or is it in the third declension because if I remove the "is" from the word then I have princip- and with "p" it wouldn't belong to the a,o,u or e declension therefore only the third declension is left? A side note. I'm learning latin at my university (intensive course for my history class) and no one told me that you should always also learn the genitive word for each verb so that you know it's declension. I figured that out by myself after learning already about 700 vocabularies. So I'm struggling a bit with the ambiguities of some declension endings, is there a general pattern to it? I figured out that many verbs that end with -tus belong to the u-declension and not o-declension if they have an "us" ending but some weird vowel before it and the word sounds strange then I guess it's the third declension sometimes , but that's not enough I guess. I'm German, and it's really true, the hardest part of latin is the cases system. Thx for the videos !
@legaleagle467 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, no. "Principis" is always Third Declension Genitive Singular, because the Nominative Singular is "princeps," not "principus" (which is what it would be if it were a Second Declension noun). Remember, the Genitive Singular, not the Nominative, is what tells you to which declension a noun belongs.
@Aditya-te7oo3 жыл бұрын
Jonny Mahony I'm surprised that you're having problem with Latin's case system despite being a native German speaker. 'Cause according to me Germans shouldn't have problems with Latin 'cause their own language German has cases too.

Isn't princeps supposed to mean "the first" like Augustus who's the "princeps civitatis" or the "princeps senatus" (the first of the Senate, like the most honorable of the senators) during the Republic? And many thanks again for your videos :)
@latintutorial9 жыл бұрын
It has a lot of meanings, chief being one of the more common ones. Princeps is also used a lot in respect to leading men of other ethnic cultures. But you're right, it is used for the emperors (especially early in the empire), and it's why we often call the first half of the empire (up to the tetrarchy of Diocletian) the Principate.

Wait, so "princeps" looks like an i-stem - with the "-ps," a consonant plus an "s" in the nominative singular - so the genitive plural should be "-ium?" But according to online sources its not an i-stem, and the genitive plural is "-um." Is "princeps" an exception?
