Great review! I love the trilogy and also can't wait to see the Western interpretation for the Netflix series. Btw there's also a well acclaimed Chinese series which based on book 1 from last year, and I've never saw any book to screen adaptation reach their level of faithfulness, if you enjoyed reading the trilogy you should really check that one out too😃

Great review. I just wanted to point out an incorrect detail in the beginning. The Cultural Revolution was not trying to preserve Chinese culture - it was actually trying to destroy a lot of Chinese culture because it was considered "old and outdated." The Cultural Revolution had what is known as the campaign to destroy the Four Old Things. The Four Olds were: Old Ideas, Old Culture, Old Customs, and Old Habits. So the "red guards" (young Chinese communist members serving as paramilitary movements) went around destroying Chinese culture like ransacking temples, destroying historical artifacts, burning scrolls and old books, vandalizing historical monuments, banning historical writings, destroying imperial tombs & corpses, etc.

That was only partially true, the goal was to eliminate social class, however different people interpreted Mao's words differently, there's also some took this as an opportunity to took down their rivals, also most Red Guard were students, the younger the more radical they were. The whole movement ended up a huge chaotic mess, instead of targeting the old social class systems they ended up targeting traditional cultures, historical sites, temples and intellectuals, many of the high ranked communist party members were also victimized as they're seen as reactionarist or pro-Soviet by the radical Red Guards.
