The 1948 version with Gene Kelly as D'Artagnan (among so may others - Lana Turner, Angela Lansbury, Vincent Price was the *BEST* Richelieu) -- that one is my favorite incarnation of the Three Musketeers film adaptations.

Now what I like in this fight scene is that they're attacking with the point 90% of the time which is good, what was common in hollywood swashbucklers was using all types of swords in the same manner as Sabres, generally at the behest of the films Director not the Fight Choreographer, they wanted wild and flash battles, at least the great fencing masters Fred Cavens, Ralph Faulkner and Jean Heremans were able to pull off both flashy and realistic battles at the same time.

"Now what I like in this fight scene is that they're attacking with the point 90" Because they are fencing with foils. Foils are not real weapons and rapiers have edges though are not used much, the edge that is. Rapiers, which is what people of that era would have been armed in the streets of Paris, have weight and edges. They weighed about 3 pounds. IF you want much more realistic sword fight were it looks like they are actually trying to hurt each other try The Three Musketeers from 1973 with the late Bill Hobbes as the fight arranger: The Three Musketeers (1973 www.imdb.com/title/tt0072281/ Michael York and Chrisopher Lee, final fight )kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWrYeKxpgdGBm6s Ethelred Hardrede

The best version of this scene I ever saw is the one with Gene Kelly as d'Artagnan but YT deleted it from my swashbuckler playlist. It's way better than this version, not even In the same universe.

@@EthelredHardrede-nz8yv thank you. Good information. Having watch the films multiple times, I don't think they follow fencing rules according to Hoyle. There's a lot of Kicking and hitting with objects beside the Sabre. Especially by Oliver Reed.

@@macmcleod1188 Rules? In a knife fight? - Line in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Oliver was apparently bit dangerous on set. Chritopher Lee says he was the best swordsman actor in the movie. Seems likely that he was as he is supposed to have been in more on screen sword fights than anyone else and was in WWII in a special opps group, something he said little about and not just because a lot of it was classified. There is a video of him explaining, to Peter Jackson for LOTR, how a man actually sounds when stabbed from behind. The 'drunk' with 2 swords was Bill Hobbes, the fight arranger. Bill died recently. Why yes I too have seen the Three Musketeers from 1973 a lot. I paid to see in theaters five times, same as I did for the Empire Strikes back. Next most was Alien at 3. Ethelred Hardrede

@@EthelredHardrede-nz8yv yes but that's the difference between fencing and fighting, right? There are rules in fencing. it's a sport. And I think there are even rules in fighting. We didn't see Men of Honor literally stabbing each other in the back without warning. Sounds like we are both huge fans of the movie. I saw it in theaters also. Pretty sure I saw it multiple times though not as many times as I saw Star Wars.

@@macmcleod1188 "There are rules in fencing. it's a sport. " Yes but that is now, not then. They did SOMETIMES have rules in duels. The reason for a second was to make sure the rules were followed. While its not stated in any of the movies or, IIRC in the book, I suppose the formal duel would have been first blood. Dumas was in at least one duel, I don't what kind or how many but at least one.

Shitty made. In book there are 5 cardinal guards not 6. Athos fought holding sword in his left hand, as he got hurt previous day into his right shoulder. Also the dialogues do not reflect the chivaliry level of communication in original novel by M. Dumas.
