Former prime minister John Howard has revealed the three reasons why he is against the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
Mr Howard said he is against anything that divides Australians by race and also fears what could happen in the hands of an “activist High Court”.
“I think the final reason is that whatever the government might say in the next six weeks, the truth is that any pronouncement of this body will have a coercive effect on the government of the day,” he told Sky News host Sharri Markson.
“If this body proposes something the government doesn’t like, every man and his dog … will be yelling at the government to do what they are told.
“Because this, after all, is the body which represents Indigenous people and you’ve gone to all this trouble to insert it in the constitution and now you are going to ignore their advice? How can you possibly do that?”

It is also written on the statures, the only thing that males a person in Australia an Abiriginal, is that the person must have lived their lives continuously as an Aboriginal. Those fakes should watch their step as the law comes down on them.

Anyone else notice that Mr Howard spoke about the issues? Gave reasons for his views. And notably, didn't spend his time saying what bad people all his political opponents were, or that they were probably all secret racists or extremists? Also he didn't read the focus group tested buzz word press release given to him by his minders. I miss real politicians.

@@YasminYoruba Hey Sooky, I'd like to read kawaiiamethist response also. While we are waiting thou, I'll have a crack, as a white 62 year old Melbourne born boy at answering what I think kawaiiamethist is getting at. A quick Google search shows that there are around “250 Indigenous languages including around 800 dialects, "many voices”. My search goes on to say that, aboriginal peoples understanding of ''Languages is that they are living things that connect aboriginal people to Country, culture and ancestors. Aboriginal's belief is that the land actually gave birth to their language. Language and culture are then inseparable.' And so, that's why "decisions" need to be kept locally in community. By making it, “One voice” nationally, it would disconnect each aboriginal person from their Country, culture and ancestors at the local / community level. This we do not wish to do.

They look after Chinese and Indian communities more than they do with our indigenous communities. Melbourne city is a mini China town, where do we are our own Identity and culture these days? It's going out the door. Aussie and Indigenous peoples should be standing up together and taking our country back! Why can't people see the greed and corruption here? It's sickening to prey on grassroots societies...Look at how Thailand turned out after centuries of corruption... We're only this young and it isn't looking good.

Wait a constitution written totally by white men with all considerations and contributions coming from white men. Written by white men and in its whole for the betterment of white men. Deliberately leaving out the First Nations or any representative of them by design to ensure this. So now up for discussion is one very small contribution being that to included the First Nations people. With no constitutional power other than a clearly worded and intent to be nothing more than a voice of those people to give there opinion for consideration. The 'equal marriage' laws directly spat in the face of Christianity. Marriage comes from christian religious doctrine and insists that men and women can only marry. Religion and state are supposed to be separate but the gay marriage vote allowed the state to impose its new definition of marriage on a religious institution, at a time when gay people could get the same rights as married couples under law anyway. That certainly was a big deal and sets the stage for more radical progressive policies down the track. I'm not religious and have gay friends BTW.

The government of the day wants to divide Australians into "Haves" and "Have-Nots". The "Haves" will have two Voices. The "Have-Nots" will have only one. The only qualification required to join the "Haves" is ethnicity. This is Australia adopting Apartheid. I stand for one Australia, one Nation, one person, one value.

The distinction between "Haves" and "Have-nots" depends on the comparison one wishes to make . Your comment is not correct if the comparison sought to be drawn is the degree of enfranchisement of the constituent ethnic groups which make up our nation. The selected group with an additional (second) Voice makes up the "Haves". They have two Voices, one conferred solely on the basis of ethnicity.. All the rest of us are the "Have-nots" @@lisagre6063

Voice parliament Create division in society , every individual, black , white yellow or whatever they are. they need to learn how to be Australian. If only 3.7 percent of Australians are Aboriginals going to have their own parliament, we also want our own parliaments people of Irish 7.5%, Scottish 6.4%, Italian 3.3%, German 3.2%, Chinese 3.1% …. No No No and absolutely NO .

Why not invest more in common indigenous communities to provide proper education to the younger generation and give them more opportunities in life. Education is empowerment. I am sick and tired of government/companies "acknowledging" through words and no actions. Worst is this "acknowledgement of country".

Well said John .Why these companies insist on promoting their political views is beyond me . Definitely dancing with fire as Bud light has demonstrated. Their focus needs be placed on offering better value and customer experience at the core.

As an immigrant that legally came to this wonderful country Australia 🇦🇺 20+ years ago, I was so surprised when I got here how much aboriginal and torres strait islanders were entitled to and got, compared to other Australians, and still today after all this time and money thrown at them, still there seems to be a problem. Maybe the solution is to treat all Australians equal, no special treatment based on race and see how quickly all these problems get solved. This song sums up why I’m voting NO against apartheid!! We are one, But we are many, And from all the lands on earth we come, We'll share a dream, And sing with one voice I am, you are, we are Australian 🇦🇺.

I think you need to really find out where a lot of the funding goes and I’m sure when you hit our land you would’ve been given a package for migrating to Australia as every other immigrant gets and why don’t you go up to the Northern Territory in the country and see how the aboriginal people do live so don’t you sit back in your chair with your something to say find out more information before you comment
