I have not seen the movie, yet, but I have read the book, which is brilliantly written, with a twist at the end that is guaranteed to have your hair stand on end. If the movie does justice to the book at all, it is explosive. What a fabulous cast! Fiennes, Tucci, Lithgow, and that just for starters. I like this preview and I'm really looking forward to seeing the film, and, of course, comparing it to the book.

You can live in Rome for a year... or for your entire life... and you will never have a grasp of what goes on behind the doors of the Vatican. It is a separate reality that is closed to the prying eyes of the world outside. When I was a student living near Piazza Navona I used to walk to the Square and into the Basilica several times a week. (It was less than a mile away.) During that time I was completely oblivious to the serious business of the Catholic Church.

Historically, they have generally fought - not always in a coherent, successful or kind fashion - for their independence from external powers. This marks their difference from the Orthodox, in which the Constantinople Patriarch was basically the chaplain of the Byzantine Emperor. And even today, the Moscow Patriarch basically does/says what Putin tells him to do/say. The secrecy of the Conclave is to avoid any interference from any foreign State into one of the most delicate moment of the life of the Church, i.e. the election of a new supreme Pontiff. However, as this film (and the novel by Robert Harris from which it is derived) shows, in Rome they have dialed up this secrecy to a level that could be seen as a suffocating paranoia.

SPOILER As I said, the novel - which I read - deals with this final twist in a slightly different way (and it's not that articulated). Benitez has external female genitalia, which "he" thought were malformed but still male genitalia. The rest seems to be the same as the film, as far as I can see, but here I wonder more if Benitez could safely be assumed to be intrinsically male. Certainly, Benitez had genuinely believed to be a male all his life till the surgery, and acted as a male. But the case seems to be even less clearly cut than in the film.

They wouldn't call it a "throne". It's not a monarchy. It would be referred to as "sede vacante" which translates to "the chair is vacant". By chair they are referring to The Chair of St. Peter. Also, the lack of any Latin in this makes me think the writers have no idea what they're writing about. It's Hollywood but it's so far removed from what real conclaves are and how they are done. Firstly, you would not be able to influence another cardinal's vote as campaigning was strictly prohibited. The rest of it is just Hollywood reimagining and taking creative liberties. Yes, there is a bit of political in these things but its not the center of it. If you think this is close to reality, it is not. It's thrilling and a good couple of hours to waste but accuracy is nearly non existent.

What you say is meaningful I think, however the film is based on a novel by Robert Harris, it's not an invention by Hollywood. It's a shame that they did non represent a Conclave more faithfully. However, there are some beautiful spiritual moments on this work as well, despite its flaws. For example, how the broken and tearful Adeyemi asks Lawrence if he can pray with him, which then happens.

0:59 - 1:06: "Sede vacante. The Throne *of the Holy See* is vacant". This line doesn't make sense at all. "Sede vacante" is in ablative case, it means literally: "while the throne is vacant" or "during the throne being vacant", so it does not mean just "The throne is vacant". You want to use Latin in order to say "The Throne is vacant", you say: "Sedis vacans", in nominative case. Then the English text: "The Throne OF the Holy See" is absurd because the throne and the see are one and the same thing. The Holy See (or the Holy Throne) is what is vacant. Not the Throne of the See because this is a pointless tautology, a useless and ugly repetition. The Vatican is all about ceremony and pomp. When you want to make a film about that place and the people working under that system, you must make it impeccably.

You’re right. But perhaps this is some kind of bastardized Italian|Latin fusion of an expression? Roman Catholic Priests in Rome where Latin is a living language would know better than to use the Vulgate in formal parlance. Unless there is perhaps another reason for this form which is more literary in point of reference? But good catch nonetheless! Ablative in Latin mimics the passive voice in Italian I believe like in Dante’s Divine Comedy. 🧐

@@yucol5661 Indeed, and the novel by Robert Harris is even more respectful of Lomeli (Lawrence in the film) and the Catholic Church, without hiding its hard failings though. I think Harris is on the record for saying "I have a lot of time for the cardinals", meaning that he acknowledges that they have huge responsibilities. And he is not even Catholic nor Christian, as far as I can remember. Still, while the harsh criticism is unwarranted in my mind, there are some issues about whether Benitez could have been ordained validly in the Church. I think they can be overcome, and I think that Benitez was a wonderful person, but I am not an expert of certain matters. Harris did his homework and it shows throughout the novel and the film, but he might have missed this bit as well.

Lawrence and Bellini have worked together with and for the pope, and Bellini has to TELL Lawrence that he and the pope used to play chess and he always lost?? That kind of shoddy exposition irritates me no end.
@CuriousCrow-mp4cx
@CuriousCrow-mp4cx 27 күн бұрын
But Lawrence was not that intimate with the Pope. He was too busy with his duties as Dean. Bellini may have spent more time with the Pope than Lomelli/Lawrence. And the scene you refer to is exactly as written in the book. To say Lawrence was an intimate of the Pope is a stretch. Indeed, so far the only conversation Lomelli refers to is when the Pope - like a very good boss, BTW - tell him that some people are shepherds, and some people are managers, and Lomelli is an excellent manager, and the Pope needs him to do that job. It is never stated that this conversation was the seed of Lawrence/Lomelli crisis of faith, but it certainly influenced him, because he loved the Church. And it may have led him to vote for himself later in the Conclave. He may have felt certain that he should put himself forward because the unity of the church leaders was fracturing because of their ambitions. But, the Pope - who as Bellini says was "always 8 moves ahead" - had already told him he was not a Shepherd before his death, and Benitez's qualities in bringing the Cardinals back together in unity in the midst of chaos and dissent proved he was a Shepherd. The twist at the end, well, was a courageous choice. Due to the culture war grand inquisitors forgetting that God doesn't make mistakes. To him, the Thornless Rose is still a Rose. It's just some humans have, for their own reasons, difficulty believing that. Benitez spiritual authority, rather than worldly authority as a man, meant he was a Shepherd, and deserving of the papacy.

@@humbleherald2163 I've tried to reply to your erudite response above, but it has, disappointingly, been deleted. Wrongthink, presumably. The Church finds itself at the messy and conflicted intersection of the divine with the human. Its job, insofar as it can be considered to have something as prosaic as a job, is to make the former intelligible to the latter in a way that is readily understandable and accessible but which also keeps its central tenets as pure as they can be. And the film makers' job is to construct a plausible universe in which the action they depict takes place, to use their actors' talents to their fullest, and to sell tickets to a sufficiently large cohort of people as to render it economically viable. It can be seen, therefore, that they have competing agendas. The Church is concerned with our souls, and the film makers with much less eternal concerns. My point is that this has led them to a denouement which is not, to adopt your phraseology, logically plausible. For all that some may see it as poignant and others as 'human,' a rather contentious term, paying excess attention to these uncertain ideas would lead the Church from its narrow path. The reality, quite apart from what Hollywood insists it is, is that the Pope is not going to be who they suggest it could any more than it would be a woman. That might be at odds with modern sensibilities and those of the audience, who are increasingly inclined to accept all manner of things that seem to be counter-intuitive, but I see no bigotry or spite here - only a recognition that the essence of the Church, its teachings and the way it is constituted makes it impossible. Your loquacity comfortably exceeds my own and it may also be that you are an accomplished theologian with many years' experience in studying the workings of the Catholic Church, in which case I must defer to you. In the meantime, however, I contend that the people who made this admittedly beautiful and well-acted film are perhaps understandably more interested in the old concern of putting 'bums on seats' than in plausibility. This is fine. Just don't conflate it with anything like the institution that is being depicted.

@ You must be a Muslim or nonbeliever: The movie makes misleading statements, for instance about a former pope being part of the Hitler Youth, The two cardinals’ speeches in this movie were about doubt, and embracing other faiths, no one can tell you who to vote for. No one has the right to say who the other should vote for or who they have voted for,” he reports. But the cardinals in the movie Conclave talk of little else. It tries to create confusion where there is none; it tries to demonize certainty, but only certainty it disagrees with; and it is missing what actually makes its Roman settings significant: Their place in the continuing mission of Jesus Christ on earth.
