It's funny to think that the younger Charles was regarded as stodgy and a bit peculiar for being so interested in preservation, sustainability, etc. His passions (and, I'm guessing, the wise input of senior advisers) are now serving him well -- preserve/restore, spend wisely, showcase the artisans, make the ceremony inclusive, embrace his mother's legacy.

I almost dread watching mainstream "media" coverage of the coronation - especially here in the U.S. I am positive that none of the networks or tele shows will showcase the insight, historical significance, tradition and knowledge that you have wonderfully demonstrated and continue to demonstrate in your content. I do wonder what source will be best to view to receive the expert commentary and insight that we enjoy from antiquarians such as yourself. Early congratulations on the continuity of the Crown and I do hope the event unites and inspires as only history can as it comes to life in front of our very eyes.

Thank you so much for the series of coronation history. I was born 2 years after Elizabeth II was crowned, so all this is new, and being American, I wasn't taught any of this in school. It's wonderful that they are giving these artisans work in refurbishing the old things.

It's important to keep the skills and crafts involved alive, isn't it! We're not taught these aspects of cultural history here in the UK either sadly, but thankfully enough importance was attached by some to the matter in the past for records and books to be created, if you go looking! It's wonderful that my bringing these things to the light of day is so well appreciated!

I like how the cyphers of the late Queen and Prince Philip are retained in the ornamental woodwork near the feet. A little nod to their original owners. Fun fact: Prince Philip's chair of estate was not actually used at the coronation in 1953. He used a chair like the other royal Dukes with his arms embroidered on it. They made his chair of estate later to match the Queen's when they were placed side by side in the throne room at Buckingham Palace.

That is a delightful touch I thought - I am pleased these chairs have been chosen, they are very visually an aesthetically pleasing. I am all for the reuse of items BUT in the context of these artefacts I wish they had kept the originals for display and conservation and had new ones made for the upcoming coronation. I can picture an exhibition at St. James's Palace covering a lot of the regalia from each of the last five or six coronations (William IV, Victoria, Edward VII, George V, George VI, Elizabeth II, and Charles III) in the lead up to William V's coronation. IDK. That is just the history lover in me. 👑

The comment on your book on previous coronations triggered a memory of some coronation kitch from QEII that I treasure. My NZ grandparents sent me a set of stiff paper cutouts of key parts of the coronation. The State Coach w horses, several lines of guardsmen of horse and foot, and the yeomen. I enjoyed playing with them. They were done by a newspaper as a special bonus for the children. I wonder if something similar happened in UK?

I love watching this videos highlighting the details of the work needed to make the Coronation happen. Thank you for making them. Its really good to know that the Royal Household are using so many traditional British craftsmen to do the work. I just feel sorry for these firms that must have been juggling their existing order books with the rush order to prepare for the Coronation. Especially the Royal School of Needlework. They must have been rushed off their feet with all the new embroideries and robes they have had to produce at short notice. Do you know if the Royal School was responsible for the new standards and ensigns that were presented by the King last week to units of the armed forces as well?

@@allanbarton - the 'People's Homage' has so many issues that do indeed make it bizarre: 1) the text is a rehash of the Oath of Allegiance, not a form of homage. 2) 'homage' can only be done in respect of a benefit - peers and bishops accrue benefit in a feudal sense because they're peers or bishops - a tangible benefit, even now (although in the case of peers not now thought necessary...) 3) On the other hand if you're born 🇬🇧 (or a citizen of a Commonwealth Realm) you're born into allegiance to the monarch & no further Oath is required unless a person wishes to become 🇬🇧 or takes up a specific office like that of Member of Parliament, where an overt expression of allegiance in the operation of that office is advisable. 4) it's embarrassing to say stuff like this - the last time I promised anything to the monarch was when I promised 'to do my duty to God and The Queen' in 1977 as a Cub Scout. 5) it's an own goal - feels like a referendum on the monarchy in particular & His Majesty in particular. The King is a good man and I support him and Queen Camilla and the monarchy, but I get the feeling Queen Elizabeth II would've found a way to thwart the Government and I suspect the Archbishop who tendered such bad 'advice'. I'm angry about this - it's psychologically dangerous and can be seen as a referendum and we all know how divisive to referendums can be! Very happy to say the words 'God Save The King' btw: my choice entirely. Sorry for the rant!

Thank you for this - it's good to see that the old chairs are being used in this way; not only in the negative way that money is not being wasted unnecessarily on making completely new ones, but also in the positive ways that the old chairs are being given a new lease of life instead of just mouldering away, and also various crafts are being given a place in the coronation. BTW Please may I ask what (if anything) these chairs have been used for in the time since they were used at their coronations? By the look especially of the 1937 ones they have certainly been used quite a lot!
